puresimmer -> FaceBook and PureSim (8/8/2007 5:43:14 PM)

Guys, after doing some research I think I'd like to migrate the PureSimmers online community to FaceBook. FaceBook is cleaner, easier to maintain and will provide me with even more ways to deeply integrate the game into a social network.

Would you guys mind migrating over to FaceBook? Its painless to sign up, and it's so ridiculously popular many of you probably already have a FaceBook account (its free of course).

I think it could be a better conduit through which to spread the word about PureSim. Apologies for anyone that has fallen in love with the PureSimmers group on NING but I will be migrating to FaceBook ASAP.

Please take the time to sign up, I promise this will be our last stop in social networking land! Again, I apologize, but the FaceBook model is more scalable and gives me more opportunity to integrate the game into the social network.

Shaun

So you guys like puresimmers.ning.com better or is the social networking experiment not interesting in general?

I'm all for the networking, but didn't like Facebook's unwelcome spyware. After signing up, it dumped several dataminers onto my PC. Didn't have that problem with Ning.

You know, it's interesting how I happened to be chatting with my wife about the move to Facebook and she looked at me with great concern. She mentioned a lot of negative news she's heard about them. Though Facebook is a "bigger" name, I would really prefer to opt out.

Frozen Stiffer -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 6:24:24 PM)

I'm cancelling my facebook, too. Bad vibes, bad rep, bad experience.

Ning was a little easier to use too, it seemed.

KG Erwin -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 7:44:30 PM)

Well, I guess Shaun didn't know about Facebook's bad publicity. If any of you guys wanna stay with it, then you'll need to run Adaware after each login/logout.

After I deactivated my account and cleaned my PC again, I've had no further issues.

This makes me wonder about MySpace, too. I've never created an account there.

LetsPlay2 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 8:04:39 PM)

I did the same. Since I deactivated I am now clean as well.

My Space seems to be Ok if you do not do the updates.or get the IM. I would like to stay with Ning.

Frozen Stiffer -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 8:19:05 PM)

I'd vote for Ning.

Myspace... just has no appeal to me, for a variety of reasons that I would rather not get into.

puresimmer -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 8:21:03 PM)

I know tons about FaceBook. Its the second most popular social network on the web and by far the most reputable. I'm not sure where you guys are hearing about this security stuff, because FaceBook is the most ruthlessly protective site there is when it comes to private data.

Take a look at what you have to do to get your account confirmed, and also note the nice touches like displaying your email as a graphic (so it can't be scraped) and the fine grained level of control you have over what is displayed.

I guess it was a failed experiment, but KG's assertions of AdWare issues are not correct.

LetsPlay2 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 8:58:07 PM)

Shaun
I explained in my email to you

Frozen Stiffer -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 9:28:25 PM)

I will openly admit that other than a mysterious increase in spyware and (in my opinion) not-as-easy an interface, everything else is speculative; granted. I certainly don't expect you, Shaun, to do one thing or another, switch to one service or another. Please act on what you think is best for you and your amazing creation. Could my decision to leave facebook change at a later date? Perhaps. For now, I personally, will stick with ning. Whoever comes along, comes along-- whoever doesn't, doesn't.

Like Dennis Miller used to say, "That's just my opinion, I welcome yours".

KG Erwin -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 10:23:07 PM)

Well, I am not about to dispute Shaun's word, but I can't write off the sudden appearance of the dataminers as sheer coincidence.

The last thing in the world I wanna do is stir up any more controversy. Best intentions aside, I seem to have a regrettable talent for doing so. [:(] So, I'll just stick with playing the game and commenting on my experiences with it.

LetsPlay2 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/10/2007 10:34:15 PM)

I must say that this is entirely my doing.

I was the one that asked Glenn and FS to check their machines.

I did not, in any way, intend on causing a stir here. This is a great community and Game.
I did not intend to disrupt that.

Whatever Shaun decides to do I am going to follow.

Sorry about the cloud and I hope we can let it go !

On with 1911 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SirWolf1960 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/11/2007 6:09:23 AM)

I say no harm, no foul. This is what I love about this community, that we all look out for each other. I think that is a strength, not a weekness.

Steve

SirWolf1960 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/11/2007 6:10:14 AM)

Or weakness, even. Just cause I work in radio, doesn't mean I can spell....just talk. And some days, I wonder about that.

Steve

Personally yes..........and if you were unhappy with that location maybe even look at Delphi, I belong to many groups there.

puresimmer -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/11/2007 6:20:13 PM)

Well I have gotten a lot of similar feedback, I guess Ning just has a little more charm eh? BTW, I appreciate feedback so keep it coming (especially critical feedback).

I re-read my FaceBook response and it sounded a bit snarky, didn't mean it that way, but I apologize if I came off as being angry.

Shaun

LetsPlay2 -> RE: FaceBook and PureSim (8/11/2007 10:20:56 PM)

No harm, no foul here !! [&o]
Hey keep making a game like this and I wont mind you being "snarky"  !!  hehe  [:D]
