Sequoia -> Foreign aircraft in Japanese service. (8/17/2007 7:25:46 PM)

I recently read some 75 or so Fiat BR-20S were in Japanese service during the war. I don't own the game yet (but am planning on purchasing soon). From what I glean these are not in the game. Can others list other foreign aircraft in Japanese service not in the game for use by Modders or even the WitP II developers?

I'm not really following your question.  Are you asking what aircraft are -not- in WitP? and/or in the various mods?

Quite a few are missing.  In any case, stock and mods try to use the most produced aircraft, or at least the more interesting ones, or might combine very similar models, an represent them as one aircraft.  You're constained by the number of aircraft that can be read on the BMP files (I forget how many it is, maybe 50 or so).  You could create more than 50 aircraft, but you'd have to re-use the plane-tops (not necessarily and issue, but it could be confusing).  And you're also limited to a number of spefic slots that are carrier-capable.

Does that help?

Mainly I was interested in finding out what, if any, other foreign aircraft the Japanese used. Thanks for helping me understand the game limit however.

Japan had some license built aircraft.  Most were modified designs.  The Tony was the most famous, based on a couple of He-100s bought before the war.  They also employed an anti sub plane right at the end of the war that had some ties to the Ju-88.  When the war ended they were testing a home grown jet fighter that looked a lot like an Me-262 (though it was smaller and was a completely Japanese design) and a Japanese built Me-163.

The Japanese also built a copy of the DC-3 that was used quite a bit.  Many Japanese engines were copies or heavily influenced by American designs.  All but 1 of the flying Zeros today have American engines in place of the original Japanese ones.  Japan bought one of the first DC-4s and the G5N Liz bomber was derived from this design.

Other than a few examples bought before the war, or Allied aircraft captured and pressed into service during the war, I can't think of any Japanese aircraft bought from foreign powers which saw regular use during the war.  They had many aircraft produced domestically that were influenced by froeign designs though.

Don't forget the Lockheed Lodestar/Electra clones - Weren't they codenamed Topsy???

The Japanese had a thriving domestic aircraft industry. They tended to copy or licience build foreign designs rather than just buying them.

That's the Tabby which is in the game.

There were a lot of planes purchased by Japan in the thirties, but with only a few examples, why bother using up a slot?
The P 35 was purchased and supposedly used when the A6m2 was being considered for some of its' features.
The major "foreign models" which Japan had in any number are already in the game, (DC2, DC3, Lockheed Electra and Hudson, etc.)

During the war they had P 40's, B 17's,etc, which they captured in the Phillipines..

I read that they used to do the same thing as the Germans did occasionally - They'd use those captured B-17s to shadow an Allied formation, as the lone (Japanese) B-17 would look like a straggler.  The shadow would report the postion of the Allied formation and help to vector the inbound fighters.

Sequoia.. the BR20s shouldnt be in the game anyway because the IJA hated them and replaced them with Ki-21s as soon as it became available.

And the Tabby was not the DC-3, but the DC-2, built under license...
