What US Admiral was an Olympic gold medalist? What was his sport, and how many medals did he win?

I just learned this today, it really is too perfect....[8D]

JeffroK -> RE: Cool Trivia (8/23/2007 2:06:08 AM)

When you finish with that irrelevant question,

What is the direct link with the US Army withdrawal from Vietnam and the Sept 11 bombings?

i remember someone won medals for shooting (?pistol) - i'll look this up (or is this one you are supposed to know cold?)

rtrapasso -> RE: Cool Trivia (8/23/2007 2:17:04 AM)

Heh - i looked it up - it is pretty cute! [:D]

Local Yokel -> RE: Cool Trivia (8/23/2007 2:17:22 AM)

I'll take a shot at irrelevant's question:  Admiral Raymond 'Ben' Bass, gold medal in rope climbing, 1932 Olympics.  Don't know his other medals, but his submarine, USS Plunger, was awarded a Navy Unit Citation. Plunger was engaged in a 65 hour convoy battle which it ended by surfacing to destroy a Japanese vessel (presumably an escort) with its deck gun.  Sounds as though, after 65 hours, everyone had just had enough.

Oh, right, I think I've got it now - but only by looking it up, so I won't give a name.

"Step aside, son, let me show you how it's done."

Don't think that gives too much away[;)]

I wonder whether I have a family connection?

He certainly must have had a good eye! (or his team mates did) He must also be in the running for the most medals won in one Olympics too.

(Nope ten is)

Nope, unless they had I&I visits to the Derwent!

bbbf -> RE: Cool Trivia (8/23/2007 3:47:29 AM)

My family hails from the US, about 150 years ago - so it's possible.  No direct relationship that we know of with my famous namesake though.

MkXIV -> RE: Cool Trivia (8/23/2007 4:10:12 AM)

I think Adm. Willis "Ching" Lee won some awards for shooting, not sure if they were in the olympics or not

If you look closely at Robert E at Appomatox you can see the scar on his neck where they amputated the other one!!

Cha-Ching! [;)]

quote:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The United States Naval Academy's rifle team will honor the late Vice Admiral Willis Augustus Lee, Jr., USN '08 on Saturday, August 25, at 11 a.m. The date marks the 56th anniversary of Lee's death. The team will lay a wreath on Lee's grave, located in Section 6 of the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

"Vice Admiral Lee personifies everything that we expect in a midshipman/athlete," said Navy rifle coach Bill Kelley. "He not only holds the record for the most medals won in shooting in the Olympic Games, but he had a long and distinguished military career, rising to a three-star Admiral and winning the Navy Cross."

Lee represented the United States in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. A member of the country's shooting squad, Lee took home seven medals (tying teammate Lloyd Spooner for most in the Antwerp Games) - five gold medals (tied for most at Antwerp with Italy fencing standout Nedo Nadi), one silver medal and one bronze medal.

Not meaning to barge in on irrelevants post, I just read this interesting fact.

The direct link between the US withdrawal from Vietnam & Sept 11,

Master Sargeant Max Bielke was the last US soldier to board an evacuation plane at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Sadly, he was killed in the Sept 11 bombing of the Pentagon.

Thanks for the post. I did not realise the victor of the Battle of Gaudalcanal II was an Olympic multi medal winner.[X(] A brilliant man.[&o]

And if you think he was good with a pistol, you should see what he can do with a 16" Rifle [X(]
