KPAX -> My Hero (8/28/2007 5:10:57 AM)

May not be the perfect place for this post, but thought I would share this with ya'll.

Went to dinner with a dear friend of mine, Warren. A very unassuming man. Quick smile, kind word and a firm handshake. Nothing would draw your eye to him, other than possible his slow walk and cane.

Warren is a WWII vet. I met him as a new client years ago. While waiting for me to get off the phone, he waited in my conference room, which is bedecked with WWII aviation art. He looked intently at the art when I walked in. He looked of the age to be a vet, and I asked him if he served. "Yes". I asked him was it in Europe or Pacific. "Pacific", he replied. He had my interest now. What branch was the next question. "Army". "Wow, cool, what did you do".

"Was a POW and went through the Bataan Death March" I almost fell to my knees to thank him.

Rarely talks about it and with very little detail. He walks with a cane and is partially deaf today because of the betting he took for escaping twice.

Firm handshake, quick smile and a kind word. That is how he wants to be remembered.

To all those Vets, thanks !! [&o]

Amen brother...and a Semper Fidelis to Warren.

My great uncle Maurice Chartoff was a survivor of the march. Never spoke about it but never had a nice word for Japan either.
