[:-]Shame on us, we should be posting useful and important FOF material, and not just gibberish trying to up our counts.

Did this post finally get me to my long overdue forum promtion?[;)]

Ya don't think it will improve his game design ....... Do ya? I can see the wizard's showing up on the FoF battlefield waving there magic wands and making the other sides forces into toads or something LOL.

Two words: "egg" and "Easter." Not necessarily in that order.

Moltke71 -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 5:15:06 PM)

Probably been asked before but I'll ask again"  why is there no artillery in the Union ar,y in 1861 either in the standard or July campaigns?

Erik Rutins -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 5:48:12 PM)

There is, but it's divided among various "Brigade Artillery" attributes rather than concentrated in an artillery brigade unit.

Moltke71 -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 6:01:24 PM)

Good but I'll check to see if that's mentioned in the manual. Nice point, though.

Gil R. -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 6:13:19 PM)

Adding to what Erik wrote, it's up to the player to make the same organizational changes that the Union army did when it concentrated it's artillery more (which in FOF can be simulated by buying a second Brigade Artillery attribute for a unit that starts with one, or else purchasing a new artillery unit). If you look at the 1st Bull Run OOB's, you'll see that most of the Union's artillery was divided among companies, while the majority of the CSA's guns were in batteries. This is what we've tried to represent by having the CSA start off with some artillery units while the USA has more brigade artillery.

Moltke71 -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 6:29:23 PM)

I like the concept. What I'm checking is if it's in the manual. I'm doing a review and, for the sake or argument, I write a glowing one. Somebody buys the game because of it, opens up the first campaign and no visible Union arty. If your reasoning is in the manual, we can just tell him to RTFM. However, is everyone savvy enough to come here or check the OBs? I will mention this point as a positive in the review.

Gil R. -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 6:42:37 PM)

Makes sense. To be honest, I don't think it's explained in the manual (though I haven't read it in some time). You make a good point that perhaps such decisions should be explained in the manual. (We did try to do this to some extent -- every one of those "flavor quotes" in the manual was chosen because it illustrates or is somehow relevant to a feature in the game.)

You've got me curious: where will this review run?

Moltke71 -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 6:54:31 PM)

Gamesquad.com and it's not in the manual. I love the PDF formats; I can just search on "artillery."

Edit: I found brigade artillery on P 158 under A2.a. Could be clearer.

Gil R. -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 7:02:04 PM)

Great. We're looking forward to it.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 7:17:44 PM)

Jim,

I believe the unit attributes are explained in the Appendices, but there's no designer's guide to the thought process in how the scenarios are laid out. FWIW, the player can also use the OOB prefs to see "at a glance" which attributes, weapons, etc. each unit has.

Regards,

- Erik

Moltke71 -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 7:24:55 PM)

Yep, I'll mention that.  In fact, I may use that as a lead-in to mechanics'gameplay.

ericbabe -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/9/2007 7:42:49 PM)

I think that the best place for explanations like this would be in in-game text displayed at the start of the scenario.  Scenarios evolve much more than other manual text does.

Grotius -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/12/2007 5:07:33 AM)

I've been AWOL for two or three weeks because lightning struck my house and fried every PC inside. Not to mention air conditioners, appliances, outlets, fax machines, modems, cable TV, and our outdoor sprinkler system. Sheesh! Anyway, I've just finished building a new PC, and I think I rescued my FoF download off my old hard drive. Still getting basic utilities up to speed.

So, that's where I've been. :)

Missouri_Rebel -> RE: Is anyone here? (9/12/2007 9:13:55 AM)

Sorry for your troubles. I presume everyone is safe though?
