There is a VERY impressive YouTuber singer that goes by J/Fla. She's Korean, likely speaks better English than most of my friends. She's done an altogether vast array of covers. She has currently 16 million subscribers. She earned them. I love listening to her. Often her covers are better than the original artist.

The Impossible Task Here's a question for those who love their music. Suppose you could only ever listen to 50 pieces of music for whatever time you have left on this planet. You choose 50 and that is all you will ever hear. If you try and play other music pieces or you hear music played on the radio or TV you simply won't be able to hear it. So, knowing this, what would you choose and why? A piece of music is one piece of music say no more than 20 mins long (so for example you could include a movement from a symphony as one piece). So basically its like a top 50 - but with a difference. If you don't choose a piece you will never hear it again [X(] So who is up for putting a list of 50 together with a brief explanation of why for each. Obviously the list can be put together over time and you can post each track as you decide to include.

Typically these will be songs of about no more than 5 minutes. I've said up to 20 so that a movement, from a symphony for example, can be included. Any artist(s) you like. It's all about the 30 pieces of music that are all you will ever hear again.

The number of songs is not fair to picking older songs. Singles were what, 45's? Songs were only 2-minutes long. You should only get a certain amount of time, not songs. So if these are the only toons I am ever going to hear I need to make sure I have a mix of styles, moods, artists. This will mean it won't be a simple 50 favourites, because some quality tracks will necessarily need to be discarded in order to get an all round list. Like shunwick, my list will be in no particular order - just getting 50 will be hard enough.... so many tooooons. No.1. My first choice leaves me with a dilemma already! Which version do I choose? The track is Signal to Noise (Peter Gabriel). There is the original and the New Blood Version on my ipod. The latter is more orchestral, and as such is perhaps a more melancholy version, while the original is much more raw and there are North African(?) and Aboriginal influences that perhaps make the overall end product much richer. Such an extraordinary, powerful track that heads off in so many directions before building to a wonderful string crescendo. Yes, I agree, need little bit from each genre. If we're playing the "minutes" don't matter game. Guess I take Pink Floyd "The Wall" video movie. It's dumb if you can count Vivaldi Four Seasons the same as an Elvis song which is 2 minutes long. A song is not a song then.

The intention is not that one could choose The Four Seasons because there are four violin concertos and each has movements within. It is each of those movements that counts as a track. I will be choosing a piece from The Four Seasons myself - a piece from Winter. But I can't choose the whole of The Four Seasons as one track, I can't choose the three movements from Winter as one track. I want Largo from Winter and that counts as one track - and sadly its only about a couple of minutes long - but its quality not quantity [:)]

Well I might as well pick number two now then [:)] I've heard many versions of this ball-bouncingly beautiful piece. The pizzicato really stands out on this track, but of course its the quality of the lead that is all important. No one plays the lead like Nigel Kennedy (certainly that I've heard) - and it's his playing that makes the difference between inclusion and exclusion from my list. For my third choice I have to choose the greatest of all disco tracks. This song is just amazing - it makes people like me who have two left feet and can only 'dad dance' (and can't even do that well) just want to get on the dance floor. But what makes this track so special - and it truly is special - is the enormous variety of sounds that come at you from every direction. This track has Michael Jackson's voice at its very silky smooth best and against this we have the superb music. I've no idea what instruments are making all the sounds but there seems to be the de riguer cow bells (what self respecting disco track doesn't have cow bells [:)]), strings, brass, drums, guitars. I just love changes of direction at the end of records, and while this doesn't exactly change direction, the last minute or so of the track is just a cacophony of wondrous sound assaulting the eardrums from all sides. Evgeny Kissin - Pictures at an Exhibition : Modest Mussorgski https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH_Rsl7fjok&t=702s The romantic fused with the Russian hammer. It is the music of a people who have suffered throughout their history and yet refuse to give up hope or succumb to despair. Written for piano though usually heard in it's orchestral form, Kissin's virtuosity is wondrous to behold. Best wishes, Steve

I'll play :) I like most music genres especially popular and jazz, but classical moves me most deeply. These are simply my favorite recordings that I actually own. They are often longer than twenty minutes, but I'll count them in twenty minute sections rounded up. There are youtube links where available in case anyone's interested in a particular recording. Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5. Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra/Jansons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsCoHUA8h5I Actually I prefer the 6th symphony but this is my favorite Tchaikovsky recording that I own. The whole OPO/Jansons set is great. Rachmaninov Cello Sonata in Gm - Paul Tortelier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afeoXtWWzg8 Beautiful piece, very expressive playing from a great artist. Mahler Symphony No 4 / Cleveland Orchestra/Szell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDhb0ztacM0 Not sure which is my favorite Mahler symphony, but this is definitely my favorite Mahler recording I own. I know I will like just about anything with Szell's name on it. That's 8 points out of 50. Will certainly run out of points before favorite recordings.

Well I am going to find this impossibly difficult as it is - hence the title - so I can't afford to give so many points away on full symphonies. I may choose to add further movements to this symphony as its my favourite symphony from my favourite composer, but for now I will use 1 point on this beautiful movement from Beethoven's 6th. Not sure if I can count the III, IV or V, as one but they all roll into one for 18 and a half minutes of musical magnificence so I will count it [:)] If you won't allow me that then it will be V Allegretto. No.4 Symphony No.6 in F Major (III, IV and V) - Beethoven (it's all one movement on my ipod so.....[:)]) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4g-FhqbVtQ Why? Well its really very simple. V starts at about 9:30. It punches one in the mouth straight out of the box and leaves one prone on the floor, totally helpless - but that is not even the best bit. While still trying to recover and get to one's feet, what comes along at about 13:30 has one quickly assuming the foetal position and blubbing uncontrollably like a baby. It simply doesn't matter how many times I hear this - I am reduced to tears every time. Those strings..... wow.
