Did you catch the Military Channel program on the return of older Marines back to Iwo Jima? These were the guys who landed on that beach, and fought in that campaign. Made them walk up to Mt. Suribachi too. Pretty stirring stuff.[sm=Tank-fahr09.gif][sm=character0077.gif]

Well you see tourist groups from Korea and Japan following a guy with a flag so that they don't get lost in an
unfamiliar city........but I am some what taken aback that a/ Marines would need a flag guide and that b/ they might get lost on an Island as "large" as Iwo [8|]

It's proper name is a guide-on and all Marine Corps Units down to the Platoon Level have them. More so for tradition than anything else. I have seen guide-ons from the platoon level to the MEF. Guide-ons are decorated with streamers to signify battles that the unit has participated in. They are usually kept in the rear. Guide-ons have been used throughout history to keep unit integrity intact (think civil war) and it was always considered to be of the highest honor to bear the units guide-on during battle. [:)]
