Drex -> I held a battle and no one showed up. (9/14/2007 5:25:57 AM)

I'm not reporting this as a bug, only as an odd occurrence: Playing the new patch, Souther Steel. 1st Lt level as the Rebs. In a detailed battle, the advisors report shows me with a morale of over 5000 and the Union with 2900. However, my force has only 14 brigades but the Union has 24. I decide to fight because my high morale has overcome numbers before. I assume a defensive position in front of the city objectives and wait..and wait. I know the Union is coming because the reports between the turns mention the units moving. three days pass with no Union troops visible, this has never happened before. the longest I've had to wait is 2 days. fianlly into the start of the 4th day, all union units are mentioned in rout! and I have won the battle because the time limit was up. there were no casualties of course. this ever happen to anyone?

Sure. Sounds just like the historical Battle of Shaky Knees way back in '63. The Union army was advancing when they suddenly decided to stop where they were to play frizbee golf. They were later shoo'ed off by a local farmer. The Rebel force, led by General What's-his-face,then decided to host a square dance, but soon realized that they had no partners and promptly turned in for the night.

Seriously, that is weird and has never happened to me. Never heard it mentioned before either. Sounds like a bug of some sort. Wonder what happened here that could have made 'em rout?

The rout in itself is understandable: the will or morale of the attacker drops (2 points I believe) every night (though how 3 nights, i.e. 6 points, could rout a 24-brigade army is rather puzzling). As to why they didn't attack in the first place, I have no idea.

Well a morale level of 2900 is low but I expected them to at least show up but maybe they decided not to dance after all.

Maybe they did the same. Decided to go on the defense and wait for you. The movement indicated may have just been for defensive or limited scout activity to see if you were coming.

Except that they were attacking and on the final day the whole army went into rout which reflects a morale issue. I guess they didn't get paid or the Confederate checks bounced. the AI should go for the city objectives but they were never spotted on the map at all.

I understand. Also I really don't know details of how the program handles everything. But if I remember some past discussions the "attacker" and "defender" labels are not always that simple. You can be dubbed the attacker just because of who controls or moves in first even if you don't want to attack. So the official "attacker" may actually prefer a strategy of defense in certain situations. Another example could be if you move in with a samll force hoping no one is there, and find a formidable foe instead, you might not be to aggressive on the attack. [&:]

As for the rout. Could this just be the programs automatic way of handling the loser, because the time limit for the "attacker" ran out?

I have heard that sometimes the best attack is a good defense. Sounds something that Longstreet would say.

But it was the Union doing nothing. Maybe that was Hooker.

LOL or Burnside! Maybe they forgot to show up<g>

Yes the Union force routed no doubt because the time was up however yhr Union also outnumbered me 24 brigades to 14 so i would think it would attack none the less.I have seen the AI attack even though it was outnumbered. wierd but I;m sure there is an explanation for it.

sadja -> RE: I held a battle and no one showed up. (9/17/2007 9:21:17 PM)

I had a battle where I put my units on a ridge line about 3 hexes from a set of fords. the union was abot 50% bigger in units the balance on will was confed 16 union 14. 2 brigades came across on my right flank on fords 6 hexes away. I routed those and the rest of the union tropps just moved around and would not cross the fords and time ran out and they routed. I never came off the ridge except on the first day to fight those 2 brigades. I never moved the 1 unit holding the fords on the north even though they had improvised weopons. There maybe something in the programing  that won't allow units to move to column from line close to enemy troops in line and you can't use a ford in line formation. I'm not playing the patch but 1.923.

A seperate question is there any way to look at an enemy unit to see what weapons they have before you fire on them the first time. The computer seems to attack my units that don't have the range to fight back and will (good int on thier part) will stay at maxium range and pick my guys apart. This is frustrating as it runs my troops out of ammo ( I see where you are fixing that part) I do the same thing to them but have to fire first to find thier weapon type.

Thanks for all the great work for a graet game

Joram -> RE: I held a battle and no one showed up. (9/17/2007 9:30:41 PM)

I've struggled a bit with that last point you make myself as I've often seen them attacking my units that can't fire back.  It is a little frustrating but you should be able to overcome it.

At most, I wouldn't go so far as providing free intelligence on an enemy units weapons but it would be nice to see the weapon type after the unit has fired once.  It's just too hard to keep track of on your own.
