SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (9/26/2007 2:46:13 AM)

Dred on that basis it wasn't Scotland's 2nd team either, since they had some of their leading players in the starting lineup!

Interestingly here the similarities in the jerseys has had a rew reports over the last couple of days, with some suggestion they were affected by it (eg not offloading 'cos they weren't sure who was who in that spit second) and that it was a deliberate ploy by the Scots since their jersey was not the same as the one that was approved by the IRB!

As for nth hemisphere teams the Semi's...well Argentina are playing well and should beat Scotland in the quarters....but I wouldn't write of the English just yet.....they're quite capable of beating Australia if they can pull it all together on teh day so I'd put my money on the Aussies if I had to, but an English victory would not surprise me too much.

and of course the piece de resistance of eth quarters looks like New Zealand vs France at Cardiff....that's got to be a formula that could give a great game.  France are a bit of a bogey team for the AB's - when they get that "Gallic flair" going they've been known to run riot so it will take a determined, organised and disciplined effort to beat them.  I have no doubt the AB's will be favourites........but again in the back of my mind is a keen awareness that France can be bloody hard to sop if they get it all together on the day.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (9/26/2007 9:41:38 AM)

OK then SMK...it was your second team and our first...well done [:'(]

As for the jerseys, WHAT? I have no idea what the IRB sanctioned (as I'm sure you do not...so you are probably listening to reports which always come out after games insinuating foul tactics)...but Scotland have been wearing those jerseys for the last few months...if I'm not very much mistaken, the All Blacks normally play in an, erm, all black kit...so why did Scotland use underhand tactics?

Funny, because the spin is of a different type over here...people are wondering why the ABs didn't play in black...funny that...depending on what you read depends on what you hear

But well done for the win...the rugby world will be trembling at a 40-0 victory over, erm, Scotland (second squad)!

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (9/27/2007 3:03:29 AM)

Where did I say it was your first team Dred?  There's no need to be stupid about it![8|]

The AB's didn't play in black because they were expecting to play Scotland who would be wearing an all-dark-blue jersey and it's a conflicting colour scheme.  Just like the French jersey now conflicts because they have darkened the colour of their blue.

The grey panelling on the Scottish jersies was apparently not on the versions that were approved by the IRB and which were shown to the AB's.

Whether they had been in use or not for some time prior is not relevant - the AB's expected the Scots to be wearing something else for this game.  Several teams have new jersey patterns for the cup (eg France) - they aren't set in stone.

You can see some NZ stories about it at http://www.stuff.co.nz/4214324a6429.html, http://www.stuff.co.nz/4213336a6429.html

It was a bit of a screw up by the IRB, it might have cost one side or the other a few points.  but in the end you still got nil! [8D]

Lighten up man...it was a joke. I put the cheeky smiley at the end?

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/1/2007 12:05:52 AM)

so the big question is....will hte AB's or France have to wear their alternate strip at Cardif?  Experts rate each side as 50/50, but it all depends on how hte coin is feeling on the day...it should be a coin of 2 halves, and all credit to the opposition.....[:D][:D]

Bill Durrant -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/1/2007 12:43:25 AM)

Re the jersey argument: the commentator of the game I watched was very helpful:

"If you're having trouble differentiating between the teams then the All Blacks are the ones usually with the ball"

Silver shirts it is - I predict the Froggies are going to get spanked[sm=fighting0056.gif]

how about the others?

Aussies vs Poms....the Aussie scrum isn't that good, so Johnny may get a few dropped goals to squeak the Brits ahead.....but either way the rest of the world rejoices [sm=00000289.gif]

Scotland vs Argentina? If the Argentines can play as well as they did to beat France then they'll have no problems....otherwise I think Scotland do actually have the ability to beat them on a good day...with the wind behind them...downhill...and a bit of luck!![sm=Cool-049.gif]

Who the hell is het other one?? Oh that's right...Sud Ufrika vs Fiji.....I can' see the Fijians getting to play their "natural game" against the boys from the Veldt....a thrashing I think.[sm=happy0005.gif]

Raver508 -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/5/2007 12:26:01 PM)

Yeah I reakon it should be pretty one way traffic this weekend.  The English just wont be able to hold out the aussie backline, the Fijians wont be able to counter the bok forwards and ditto the Scots vs Argentina.

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/6/2007 11:51:19 PM)

And we're out!! [X(]

Bloody hell - what a terrible display by the aB's - unimaginitive and boring - they couldn't break the French defence....so they just kept trying to do the same thing. Usd to be if they weren't succeeding with oine thing they'd try another - a kick over the top perhaps.....

They didn't deserve to win.

But then neither did the French - the referee was as bad as any international ref has been this year - 2 forward passes in the 2nd French try, 2 hands in the ruck with the AB's within 5-10m of the French line, McAlister sent off while retiring and the French not even penalised for the same thing with 9 minutes to go.

It leaves a bitter taste - why was an inexperienced ref doing a world cup quarter final??

4 more years....:(

yeah, agreed. We were awful, the ref was awful. Maybe we can only win it at home. At least the aussies went out at the same time, it won't be so bad when I'm over there next month. SA's looking good for the cup now.

20-23 as I type - go Fiji!! It can't happen AGAIN, can it?! Whichever way this one goes, this is anybody's tournament now.

I'll bite... what's an All Black. Sounds like something that'll get you prison time here.[&:][:-]

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/8/2007 3:41:55 AM)

All Blacks - the national Rugby Union team from New Zealand.  So named because they wear a uniform of all black apart from markings, but possibly a mis-print of "they play like they are all backs" referring to a running style of rugby reported on in 1905.

Has held the #1 spot in the International Rugby Board rankings for a couple of years and was hot favourite to win the Rugby World Cup but was defeated by France in the quarterfinals yesterday.

Why on earth are you reading this thread if you don't know who the All Blacks are??!![:D]

cptracks -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/9/2007 12:22:12 AM)

Used to play the game lo those many years ago as a Canadian in Oz. Also acquaintance from work used to play on the French team and I watched a game with him in the bar in Dusseldorf. Was the same rugby I played but could barely understand it, rules have changed![&:]

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/9/2007 6:04:42 AM)

Yes many would say the game has suffered from a lot of stuffing around with the rules by hte IRB trying to cure imaginary ills over hte last few years...new rules are coming in next year too to try to fix the last lot of "improvements".....[:@]

JoePirulo -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/10/2007 12:29:50 AM)

I´m not a rugby fun, but I´m from Argentina, so: what do you expect for the match against the Springboks? Do we have any chance? For what I´ve seen, this WCup is a bit surprising... AB and Wallabies out, and Pumas in...

For those who wants to know: rugby isn´t popular here (as football is...) but this sunday, the most important football match of the season (Boca - River) changed the time of beginning to allow the view of the rugby match... (we are doing better in rugby than in football... Germany 2006!!![:@]).

Greetings and VAMOS PUMAS!!!!!

SMK-at-work -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/10/2007 1:37:48 AM)

IMO Los Pumas stand a small but reasonable chance......neither the Springboks nor the English have played all that well so far, and if they keep up their form it will be the French in the final.  Los Pumas have to be the underdogs even against an underperforming RSA team......but we've seen what can happen to underdogs last weekend!!

Joe - a surprise that the Wallabies and All Blacks are out - but no surprise that the Pumas are in - they were quite properly ranked 4th in the world before this competition and have had a now significantly long run of outstanding results.

Another great sporting side from Argentina...

My guess is that the Boks will just edge the game - but it is no foregone conclusion. My predicition now is for a France vs Boks final.

Plodder -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/10/2007 11:58:02 AM)

After last weekend, it could be any ones.The Pumas definitely are in with a sniff. Even though I'm gutted the AB's lost, it's been a fantastic World Cup, even the minnows have given their opposition a run for their money.

JoePirulo -> RE: Official Rugby World Cup 2007 Thread (10/10/2007 9:45:24 PM)

Well, let´s see what happens this weekend; even if Pumas loose, the feeling here in Argentina is that they have played a great cup... Hopefully the final will be Pumas - France, as the first match was... And hope Pumas win again... But it´s a loongg way..
And Plodder, I agree: as sayed before, I´m not a rugby fun /player, but the matches I´ve seen were very exciting. France - AB was really enjoyable, (referee performance out of analysis). This weekend, rugby again.. football out...
Max.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender

quote:

This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

quote:

When Britain first at Heav'n's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain;

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

The nations not so blest as thee,
Shall in their turns to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

Still mor majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame,
All their attempts to bend thee down
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

To thee belongs the rural reign;
They cities shall with commerce shine;
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair;
Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crowned,
And manly hearts to juide the fair.

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves

Only because it happens so rarely. [:'(]

I pretty much got my wish. A rubbish final with no tries. That's somewhat equivalent to both teams losing.

Cheers, Neilster
