I know i know the answer to this question but im hitting a blank. Do undamaged aircraft fly to the nearest friendly base within range or are they simply classed as 'destroyed on the ground' once a base falls?

thanks

marky -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/16/2007 3:38:13 PM)

destroyed on grounddd

aztez -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/16/2007 3:38:37 PM)

Those planes are lost on the ground.

paladin333 -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/16/2007 3:38:59 PM)

"Destroyed on the ground" is the answer.

thanks a lot guys

Nice thing about fragments is that if parent unit is elsewhere, pilots from destroyed fragment will be evacuated to the parent unit. (At least i have observed this few times)

Even if totally destroyed on the ground the unit will reform at a later time (1 year I think)

is that true of stock and modded games, eg CHS, or just stock?

Works for both CHS and Stock.

I thought the only units lost to ground combat that respawned were headquarters and Chinese infantry units? I thought air units overrun were lost forever.

I still try and anticipate when a base will fall. I try to evac the unit(s) one to two turns prior to this happenning. I hate losing air units. It does not always work though.

Air units destroyed on the ground come back in 12 months. If lost at sea they are supposed to come back in 270 days but it is more like 30.

edit: manual page 134 (7.2.2.22) says they will return in 390 days. In my PBEM they came back faster

Yamato hugger -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/17/2007 5:53:04 AM)

Air units come back IF they arent in a restricted command when they die.

erstad -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/18/2007 3:46:38 PM)

I think the air units coming back after being destroyed on the ground is an Allied thing only. I don't think the Japanese respawn.

Yamato hugger -> RE: Aircraft in captured bases (9/18/2007 8:46:49 PM)

They do. Except restricted commands.

The Allied player in one of my PBEM's must have decided we needed to test this yesterday, because he took advantage of a mistake on my part and overran an airfield holding several daitai of my bombers lined up in neat little rows. When I checked on the following turn the units were set to return in 389 days, so it looks as though the manual might actually be correct.
