I was just wondering whether anyone here has been to the Compleat Strategist, the wargame/fantasy game/all-kinds-of-game store in Manhattan. I used to hang out there a lot and I was feeling nostalgic about it this morning. It was one of the stores I would have cleaned out if I had a million or so. It wasn't very big, and the aisles were jam-packed with merchandise. I don't know whether or not computer games put it out of business, but I imagine it's still chugging along. I think they had three locations in NYC at one point, but the one on East 33rd street was the best. This is not an ad for the store -- just a curious inquiry.

Neilster, Thanks! I think my brain is stuck in 1986, when I first went to the store. It never occurred to me to look it up on the web. The photo takes me right back...must..resist...urge to fly to NYC for a visit....

I think I have walked past it, when my wife used to take classes in that area (I always get it confused with Forbidden Planet, the comic book store). Haven't gone in, as I am usually in the City with my wife (who is not interested) and I really don't have any board gaming or PnP RPG buddies here in NYC. SoM

I used to visit their store in King of Prussia, PA every chance I got back in the late 70's and early 80's.

I was just thinking of that last week....besides the Manhattan store, they had one in Montclair N.J. that I used to go to as well...I also used to go to SPI's main office in NYC to buy games and when the GAME ROOM first opened, they used to have a large selection of board games for sale, now though, not too many.. But I have to say that my most eagerly anticipated yearly pilgrimage was going to Lancaster PA., to Millersville RD, to pick up the new baseball card season set from the APBA game company. There was nothing like being involved in an APBA league and studying the player's ratings on the day the set was released.... thanks for the memories.........

I remember they also had a store on West 57th and one in Rockefeller Center on the concourse level. I never figured out how they paid the rent for all the locations. East 33rd was the best, though. But damnably claustrophobic. Two people could barely get around each other in the aisles. I think I got my first Commodore 64 games there. But I must have spent a couple of grand there on board games. And blank hex maps and counters and dice and books and so on. They had me trained like Pavlov's dog to salivate whenever I looked at the display window. There was another hobby/wargame store in Wheaton, Maryland that was great to visit. I think it was right where one of the D.C. sniper shootings took place. My last time there was '86.

I go to that particular NYC locale from time to time. It's a nice holdout from the old days of buying wargames in stores.

I thought I was one of the only 10 people on earth that played APBA Baseball !!! Is that game still in existance? I can't imagine it would be, given the attention span of kids these days. Somewhere I still have my 65-69 seasons, just need to try to find them. But I have NO IDEA where my situation cards are... Is the game still made? What a time tunnel trip! Thanks! The computer version of APBA is pretty popular in todays time. I too had the board game and the cards in envelopes version back in the 70's. I was trying out all kinds of board game baseball games then from Negamco to Big League Manager (BLM) (really good baseball game), Strat-O-Matic and APBP. I kinda got ticked at Miller Assoc when they started milking the donkey on the computer version of the game. It was bad enough the yearly team disks were like $25, but, they wanted near $75 for a new version every other year or following year. I stopped at version 5.0 and don't even buy the season disks any longer (I got the ones where Smidt and Bonds had their homerun hitting years using steroids lol). When OOTPBB came along and this 2007 edition is just awesome I don't need APBA donkey milking programs or season disks anymore. APBA doesn't even have a career mode type play like OOTPBB either. But, the last version 5.0 did have a SOUNDman to call the action. Al Michaels I believe. That was pretty good. Thing about OOTPBB seasons are they don't cost you a dime all you have to do is download that Lahmans data file once a year when he's finished. Plus, even the yearly versions of OOTPBB are only 30 something dollars and if you pre-order they are like $5 off and by mid-seadon they are like $19.99 he's a pretty fair guy and doesn't appear to be milking the donkey. Of course I still haven't found one as great as Front Page Sports Baseball that was stat driven WITH GRAPHICS. The arcade baseballs games today are so sorry for stats I don't even buy them anymore. Last one I got was High Heat Baseball 2000 I think it were. The one with Sammy Sosa on it. It was pretty crappy for stats as well too many games 24-12 and stuff like that totally rediculous all the time. Though it was pretty good in the trade dept. So, here we all are waiting on still a great stat driven baseball game with modern day graphics and stadiums with some famous person for play by play sound waves and with a career mode and owner mode and all that good stuff all in one package. ;)

Strat-O-Matic football/baseball was a good one. It too was based on statistics.
