Ike99 -> LL background code. (9/20/2007 4:16:46 PM)

There is a big difference between Japanese ships. How big? A 14,000 yard difference. I speak of the Long Lance torpedo.

It is probably the most effective weapon in the game for the Japanese. Later in the game as Japanese control of the air falters and their carriers lose their relevance the Japanese can still cause big problems for the Allies at sea, with the Long Lance and the night.

One should really pay close attention as to what they are doing with the Japanese ships armed with Long Lance.

If it is not a ¨have to¨ do not send Long Lance armed ships into harms way. Do not use them for fast transport runs unless you expect resistance. Do not have them escort. You need as many of these ships as possible to stay as fast as possible.

There are other Japanese DD´s and CL´s without the Long Lance and if given the option send these in your carrier task force, convoy, no resistance fast transport runs, etc....you get the idea.

Sometimes you may have to use them but just be concious of it. An easy, ¨visual¨, way is to use coded backgrounds. All my Long Lance armed cruisers, light cruisers and destroyers have a night background. All those without...a bright day background.

It is a fast and easy reminder for me, when I´m putting together a task force, a carrier group when I expect to fight a carrier for example, not to pick my Long Lance armed ships.

As well, if Allies have battleships covering an anphibious landing, what ships I want to pick to send and hurt them with. It is possible to read the stats but using this idea is faster and easier. Most people are more ¨visual¨ anyways.[X(]

If you are able to take care of your Long Lance armed ships and keep them fast you will be able to cause a lot of problems on Allied landings even if they have air superiority in the area.

¨Japanese Launch Long Lance Torpedo Attack¨ is something Allied players do not like to read.

So maybe someone can use this background code idea and it helps them out too.

You are correct Ike, the difference between 21-inch and 24-inch Jap torps is HUGE!.

The ships you really want to watch for are the 2 CL's that arrive late in the game that carry 40! LL's each. These ships can be deadly.

Grobdeutschland -> RE: LL background code. (2/24/2008 4:41:22 AM)

What's up bro's...this is my 1st post. I got UV way back in 02-03' & then my life went nuts like a banana without a peel. After making my comeback to a normal life in 07' I was cleaning up my basement when bam, I found my box of PC war games - love at 1st sight, again. I've always liked ww2 naval warfare, I think the ships are awe inspiring, plus all those star trek re-runs got me hooked as a child. I almost joined the Navy instead of the Army, but I like the ladies a bit too much for the out at sea thing... in hindsight I should've gone airforce b/c there were lots of girls in blue at Ft. Bragg from Pope AFB, plus their standard of living is luxurious when compared to the grunts.

Anyway, it's safe to say I'm really to dying play this game (I had some false starts in 03). I printed out the "manual" finished reading it & played the tutorial, so I'm ready for the big one. USA s17 no FoW & no weather - so I can learn the game. I like to play the underdog so I'll be running the IJN in no time. I've been scanning the site trying to get some gen. hints & additional insight. I like this background code idea, but I don't know how to do it... sorry I can barely type that's how PC illiterate I am. I'm hoping someone can break it down & give me some advise on the inner workings of the game like:

1)How much should I trust the AI to pick Altitudes for missions, run supply convoys, control subs, etc? My guess on stuff like altitudes would be just that "a wild guess" at best. However I can probably get the hang of supply convoys, sub. operations and pretty much anything else I can read about and practice. Which leads me to #2...

2)Good advise on stuff picked up through trial and error would be most appreciated. For example- Whats the best strategy in the grand scenarios (20 month long) that I should employ when playing the IJN or the Allies. In other words how aggresive/cautious should I be with each faction early on? I'm aware that the IJN initially has an advantage, but to what extent should that edge be pressed?? I know the best answers to these questions might be to play the game, but I'm trying to selfishly learn from other peoples mistakes. As my old platoon sgt was fond of saying "the early bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that eats the cheese" [8D]

3)Anything else you guys can think of that might be of help. Out of curiosity - For each faction, what unit for land, air and sea would be considered the best in the grand scenarios? Hopefully by years end I'll be good enough to start playing by e-mail with the pro's. I have a 1+ yr old healthy baby boy so the going will be slow... at least until he's old enough to send to his room [;)] I like to master the AI, which I consider a training aid, before I get schooled by the veterans of the game. That's when the real fun begins

My thanks to all in advance.

P.S. I know, I know, my sig has some spelling errors. I hate typing [:@]

The less you leave to the AI to run for you the better.  The best example is that sub ops controlled by the AI makes them easy targets.  Run your own war to learn the value of all of your platforms and the supply situation requires your planning in advance or your logistics will force a grinding halt to ops.

bigred -> RE: LL background code. (2/24/2008 6:43:49 PM)

I would suggest after your first AI game to go ahead and get into pbem. BTW, I also am an old infantry type(11b/c/m). Be careful w/ the allies early in pbem, low experience and a lack of units does not allow a stand up fight against the japs in senario 17/19 until 10-42. If you are the japs early, go for the nut.
IN regard to original question, I too would like a detailed explaintion about how to enhance the ship selection screens about LL enhancementt. Maybe IKE99 can make us a patch?? But I can see him giving away a personally created trade secret by doing so. [&o]

Grobdeutschland -> RE: LL background code. (2/25/2008 11:46:10 PM)

Thanks for the responses. Just as I figured the AI can't really be counted on in most games to match human wit. I was hoping to let it handle what it could as I learned the game but tocaff you are prabably right it's best I start learning right from the get go. bigred (11 bang bang papa, all the way), I'll probably start playing by e-mail sooner than later if I can find opponents willing to teach me as well as beat me. That's always a plus because you learn much faster. I guess a mini-post session debriefing would be nice to have from time to time. [:)]

I've been reading the other postings like the excellent one on altitudes put up by "cap and gown". Supposedly there are others around that are just as informative but I have not been able to find them. I'm assuming the reason why there have been little activity on UV's forum is because everyone is playing WITP. Perhaps when I'm a master in UV I'll jump to that as well, however the complexity of the game (WITP) seems to not really lend itself well to multi-player. UV's smaller scope would seem to fit peoples scheduling/time for PBEM better.

Thanks for the input.. later

P.S. Maybe we should try to directly contact "Ike 99" for info on the background coding?

Yes, it is interesting how Ike99 shows us his handywork but is silent on how he created the changes.
