kstapleton -> ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 7:58:15 PM)

Hello,

I have been having this problem for a while now. As I am running Vista, and the older versions did not support it, I waited until 2.0 was release before posting this. However, after installing 2.0, the problem remains.

The contents of the debug log:

DBEngine Version: 1.0.404
9/21/2007 11:48:02 AM: App Start
9/21/2007 11:48:02 AM: Core Version: 2.0.187
9/21/2007 11:48:02 AM: North American Region: True
9/21/2007 11:48:02 AM: Checking Key
9/21/2007 11:48:02 AM: Good Key
9/21/2007 11:48:07 AM: 9/21/2007 11:48:07 AM: ActiveX component can't create object

The screen flashes, then I get this error message

---------------------------
DB Engine
---------------------------
ActiveX component can't create object
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Followed by this one:

---------------------------
Maximum-Football
---------------------------
Couldn't open database
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I am Running Vista Enterprise along with Office 2007 Pro. Also installed on this machine is Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Developer.

There are no custom leagues or teams in this install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Ken

Tbird -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 8:05:21 PM)

I'm not sure what that is
but make sure you let it install all components

could also have something to do with Office 2007

I have it running on my laptop which has Vista Home Premium but I don't MS Office on it

playball335 -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 8:45:37 PM)

This MAY have to to with Vista's UAC (user access control). Try disabling it and re-installing.

Greg Wilcox -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 9:14:36 PM)

Hi

I wanted to ask, is this a clean 2.0 install or did you install 2.0 over the 1.x version?

-Greg

kstapleton -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 9:22:15 PM)

Thanks for the suggestions.

UAC is enabled, however, I have set the "Run As Administrator" checkbox on the shortcut. I have also adjusted the permissions on the folder to give Everyone full permissions on it, as well as resetting the permissions on subfolders and files.

I have not tried a complete uninstall, clean 2.0 install, though I did try this before 2.0 was released. I have also downloaded and installed the Access 2000 runtimes along with the Jet Engine 4.0. None of these helped.

TIA,
Ken

kstapleton -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 9:34:04 PM)

OK, I performed a complete uninstall. Deleted files and folders which were left behind. Then I did a clean install of 2.0.

Same problem.

Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Ken

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 10:23:42 PM)

Hello Ken.

We're investigating the problem you have reported. We have tested the game on clean installs of Vista (various versions) and we did not run into problems.

My initial suspicion is that the version of the database components the game installs ~may~ be conflicting with the specific version of office you have installed. I will need to get that specific version of Office and perform some further testing to verify my theory and find a work around. This will take some time so I ask for your patience while we work the problem.

thanks
David

kstapleton -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/21/2007 10:46:30 PM)

Thanks David.

As a software developer myself, I understand. Getting a program and an installer that will work on most Windows installations is a monumental task. There is always that odd configuration out there, like mine. I just appreciate the effort.

If there is anything you would like to try, or have me try, just let me know.

Ken

Tbird -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 5:03:36 AM)

This is gonna sound crazy but try re-enabling UAC and reboot
then try starting the game

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 5:27:35 AM)

A UAC setting may cause the problem. I have had success with installing with the full UAC running but will see if I can reproduce that problem as well.

Personally I find the whole UAC system a pain but it's what we have.

thanks
David

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 7:28:33 AM)

Hi.

Just to give an update on this problem.

-I installed Vista Home onto one my my laptops. This was a clean install.

-I purchased and installed the full version of Office 2007 Professional. (in the most environmentally unfriendly packaging ever!)

-I then installed Maximum-Football 2.0 (via the installation file you download from matrix)

The game ran as expected.

I'm going to try some other workflows to see if I can reproduce the problem. In the mean time, trying the UAC suggestion TBird made might solve the problem. As a side note, I have never run the installation program as an administrator (from either the right-click menu, or the properites dialog). It's never been required to make the game install. I've actually not made any changes to any security settings at all for my tests.

thanks
David

Just to chime in:

I am having pretty much the same problem. Very new Gateway, dual core processors, Windows Vista, Office 2007.

I get an error on the attempted install of Directx, and then the same error messages as the gentleman above. Mine was a clean install.

Tbird -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 7:50:49 PM)

Try enabling UAC and reboot if you have it disabled,

I got that same error message when I disabled UAC last night

Hi.

Sorry you're running into trouble. The majority of installation trouble seems to be on the Vista platform unfortunately.

What was the error message you received during installation? If DirectX fails I would expect the game to have trouble. So I'd need to find out why the DirectX installation is not working.

The first question is whether or not you're online when you install the game. The DirectX installer needs to talk to the MS servers to determine what files are required (there's also the whole 'Certified Windows' check it needs to do as well). So please ensure you have a network connection first.

thanks
David

Xelvonar -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 10:08:45 PM)

When the DirectX insaller runs, it stops and says to refer to the DXError and DirectX logs.

The DXerror log reads:

--------------------

    CDXWSetup::InitInstallEngine() failed.

The DirectX log is quite large, so I have made it small to not take up much space:

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/22/2007 10:18:54 PM)

Well...there is one line in that that states a newer verison of DirectX is already installed. I'm not sure I trust that though because the installer should exit gracefully if it doesn't need to do anything. I forget the actual message but it says something like 'no updates applied'.. or something similar. My concern is that although the correct files maybe there, they're not properly registered with the system. Or, the registery has been updated but the files are not actually there.

I'll continue to go through various vista tests here but to be honest, I've tried many combinations of installation on clean machines, installing over existing builds, installing office 07 first, installing office 07 second, etc.. so far, I've not had any problems getting DirectX to install and have not had any problems getting the database engine register properly.

I'll keep trying different things.

thanks
David

Xelvonar -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/28/2007 6:47:02 AM)

Any word on this bug?

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/28/2007 7:02:13 AM)

hi.

After much testing on vista by myself, matrix, and the other testers, I can only conclude that there's something with this particular system that is preventing the game from installing and registering the components properly. Based on the report you presented above, DirectX isn't even updating properly.

I don't think I would classify this as a bug per se.

I would check into your system to see if there would be any reason for these dlls not registering properly. A security or privilege setting or something along those lines.

TBird mentioned in this thread he was able to produce a similar error by setting his security settings on vista to something other than the default. Perhaps that might be something to look at first.

thanks
David

David Winter -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/28/2007 7:36:04 AM)

BTW, I've also asked for the matrix support staff to chime in as well to see if they have any further suggestions.

Tbird -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (9/28/2007 7:51:48 AM)

Maybe going thru microsoft's knowledge base might help
dunno

Squared -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (11/18/2007 8:40:50 PM)

I just bought the game. Digital download.  I installed it on my Vista platform and I received the error.  I downloaded the 2.18 patch and installed that and I still had the error.  Then I did what Tbird suggested and enabled the UAC.  I reinstalled the main game file and then the patch and everything is working fine.

Tbird -> RE: ActiveX component can't create object (11/19/2007 12:37:41 AM)

Cool

Hi, thanks for lettings us know, and welcome to the forums. The UAC needs to be enabled for vista so that the installer can have access to the proper areas of the registery.

thanks
David
