Cathartes -> RE: japanese wreck video (9/25/2007 5:39:30 PM)

(Lifts one eyebrow) Fascinating.  Thanks for the set of links.

Does anyone know which ships these are and their stories?

Miller -> RE: japanese wreck video (9/25/2007 5:46:45 PM)

I think the carrier is the Amagi. All were sunk in shallow water at Kure in July 45.

Tofke -> RE: japanese wreck video (9/25/2007 10:02:14 PM)

for battleship it's kongo class for sure.

it's not the Hei cause she's sank at guadalcanal (nov 13 1942)

it's not the Kirishima (scuttle by her crew near Savo island nov 15 1942)

it's not the Kongo she's sank 21 nov 1944 (by us submarine Sealion)

So, i think it's the Haruna (sunk in shallow water 28 july 1945 near Kure)

Hagen von Tronje -> RE: japanese wreck video (10/14/2007 3:00:21 PM)

The BB in the first link is no ship of the Kongo class I think. There is no second funnel visible behind the aft mast-structure. With only a single stack, and the pagoda turret looking as it does, I think it's Hyuga.

As for the second link, I think this is the Haruna, as her SA turrets have rounded sides (as opposed to the Fuso- and Hyuga-classes, which had square and angled sides on their SA turrets

Last link under BB is no battleship, it's the Aoba, sunk off Nabe, S of Kure Naval Yard. cf. photograph in Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War, p.358 and 359, the damage pattern on her port bow matches, as does the traning of her B-turret to port, apart from the fact that the turret design identifies her as either Furutaka or Aoba class.

Not to mention the flight deck aft!!

Cool vids. Thanks Tofke.

Heh, yeah, there was that little detail, too :D But I'm sure everybody here is knowledgable enough to know this fact. And I agree, very cool videos, didn't see any of them before.
