el cid -> no end of turn file (9/26/2007 7:42:53 PM)

Now the game does not produce an end of turn file. How do I see how my turn finished, or how can I get a screenshot of how my game ended?

JAMiAM -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 12:23:59 AM)

Are you using the official patch, or the beta patch?

sefirot -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 5:40:32 PM)

Hi James,
I am also experiencing the same problem since I have installed the latest original patch.

On the other hand, I am also having some additional problems:
  • When I press the ‘next unit button’ (or press the ‘n’ key) instead of selecting the units with remaining MPs or not dug in, the program is going through the entire  OOB and units with 0 MP are also being selected. Sincerely for large scenarios, reviewing manually at the end of your turn that all your units are dug in is quite annoying and it can easily kill your game enjoyment.
  • During the replay of my opponent turns (Korea 50-51 and Balkans 12 scenarios) infantry or tank units appear in a Sea hex in the left border of the map. In Korea, the UN has some sealift capacity but in Balkans 12 the Turks have no capacity, so this is clearly a bug
  • In my Korea game and after watching the replay, the map is completely broken and in the left border of the map, mountains and airports are appearing in the middle of nowhere (the “damaged” area  is four hexes wide). I have tried to reload the turn, save the game, change the zoom … and the problem is still there.

As I haven’t found any specific mail address for TOAW 3 support, I‘ve  just sent you a mail to support@matrixgames.com with my saves, screen captures …Hope these are minor bugs that can be easily corrected.

JAMiAM -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 6:37:01 PM)

Send them to me. One set of files per email, please, with a complete description of the problem that you're seeing. If the files are for PBEM games, and not mid-turn saves, then I will need your password. Ralph doesn't, but he's really bogged down with his day job lately and won't have time to look at them for a while.

Send them to iamjamiam AT yahoo DOT com

For issues like you're describing, support at matrixgames is going to be out of their league. They deal more with serial number issues, refunds, bad disks, etc.

sefirot -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 6:54:55 PM)

Hi James,

I guessed that the Matrix address was no the good one but I couldn't find your address. I have all the files in a single zip but it a 6 MB file. Is it ok for you or do you prefer that I split them in several small files?

Go ahead and send it as is, I suppose. Just make sure that I get a very detailed description of each issue, so that I can follow along.

sefirot -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 7:45:07 PM)

File sent.

el cid -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 8:55:08 PM)

Thanks fo the kick response.

I am using the official patch.

The kick response? I always say "Kick a man when he's down. Hell...give him two, just to make sure he stays down." At least when I'm gaming, that is...[;)]

Anyhow, I've double-checked, and it is writing the files. Did you start the game with the beta patch, and then continue it after the patch? Did you start with the official patch? Please check your version number and ensure that you are indeed using 3.2.29.27, and not 3.2.29.26. Do you have the Advanced Game option of Sit Rep Log set to On or to Off?

el cid -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 10:48:10 PM)

Of course I meant to say "quick" response.

I never downloaded the beta patch, and the version is the 3.2.29.27, and the site rep log is "On".

Just to be perfectly clear, you're talking about a PBEM game, right?

When did you start playing the game? Before, or after the patch? If before, did it write the files previously?

JAMiAM -> RE: no end of turn file (9/27/2007 11:13:24 PM)

A couple more questions. Which OS are you using? Is TOAW III installed into its default directory, or did you change the install path?

Here's what you should see, if everything's working right on your end. Please look in your Saves folder and tell me which of the three file types you're getting when you end the turn. Try with a fresh game, and just do a test run. Arracourt 44 for example.

el cid -> RE: no end of turn file (9/28/2007 5:57:55 PM)

Yes is for PBEM game.

The curios thing is that for a new game it will create the END OF TURN DO NOT ... file, but for the ones that were started before this last patch, it will not create them.

The OS is windows XP

Thanks for narrowing it down. Sorry for the inconvenience for your existing games. If you had just started a long game, you might try asking your opponent if he wouldn't mind a restart. It will probably be faster and less irritating that waiting for a new patch to correct version to version shifts like this from affecting end of turn files.

After asking my opponents to send me again their turns (this time compressed) and reinstalling the game from scratch, the problems with the replay and map display are apparently solved. I guess, gmail was corrupting the PBEM files in some strange way.

So, 3 of 4 problems have been solved but I still have the problem with the ‘next unit button’

Good to hear about the 3 solved problems. Sorry about the next unit behavior, but changes to that will have to wait for the next patch.

sefirot -> RE: no end of turn file (10/2/2007 5:16:31 PM)

Ok. I will wait for the next patch. The 'next unit' behaviour does not prevent playing the game but it adds some micromanagement that can be a little bit tedious in large scenarios. The other option is to not dug in all your poor Russian soldiers and let the panzers squash them.  Clearly not a good plan [:)]

If I am not wrong, some people have already asked for it. In any case, I think it would be great if in the new patch, Ralph could add a button (or menu order) that dig in all the units which are in mobile deployment, set to tactical reserve all the arty units not entrenched ....

One thing you can do is to wait until later in the turn to dig in the units, so that the next unit command won't be redunantly jumping to units that were dug in earlier. However, it may add a bit of "excitement" if your turn ends earlier than you expect and you don't have the option to go through them...[;)]

We actually had that feature active in pre-release testing, but decided to drop it, since we would have to build in some fail-safe mechanisms to prevent players from accidentally activating it. There's nothing like telling your PBEM opponent that you had to replay the turn, since halfway into it you accidentally clicked on the "dig in all units" option...[X(]

Maybe you could add a 'dig in/tac res yes/no' popup after you hit the end turn.

Or add it in the game menu (i.e. not in the right button unit menu) so that a player can hardly click on it "by accident" [:)]

Menschenfresser -> RE: no end of turn file (10/21/2007 9:53:17 PM)

Posted at GS, but was referred here by El Cid (thanks).

I'm also not getting an end .sal when finishing a PBEM turn. FitE. We started before the new patch. Patched around T10. Running XP SP2.

I believe with new games I've started I do get an end save.

Any news on this issue?

Hi Zac,

Yes, unfortunately, that was an issue with the beta patch. Any games started with it will not produce the end of turn SAL files, even after patching to the official 3.2.29.27. All PBEM games started with the official patch will generate the file. Sorry, but odds are, the games in progress will be finished before the next patch comes out, and it would create potentially more problems to try and institute a retroactive fix for those dwindling number of games. Sorry.

Menschenfresser -> RE: no end of turn file (10/22/2007 6:06:37 AM)

No big deal.

It wasn't started with the beta patch. It was started with the previous official release. Unless Dicke B had the beta installed. I never asked. But I'm playing the Axis, so the original file came from me. *shrugs*

Thanks for the clarification.

So there is going to be a next patch? What changes will we be expecting?

el cid -> RE: no end of turn file (10/28/2007 8:46:02 AM)

I have been running more tests.

It seems that if a re-open a previous turn, and replay it, it will create the END OF TURN FILE.

Why, I do not know. But it may be a clue to solving the issue.

Veers -> RE: no end of turn file (11/2/2007 7:02:34 PM)

I'm in Zac's boat, the scenarios started looooooooooooooong before the beta patch and both myself and my opponents are patched up to the official patch, and now I'm not getting end of tur files. However, on scenarios started since the patch I do get the END_OF_TURN saves.

If you save and reload do you get the END_OF_TURN files consistently afterwards, El Cid?

el cid -> RE: no end of turn file (11/3/2007 1:14:10 AM)

It is not really save and reload. It is re-starting a turn.

Open the PBL file your oponnent sent you. Then close (ofcourse it will ask to save it, but you can ignore this saved file).

Re-open the PBL file your opponent has sent you, and this time play the turn. Your opponent will get a "1 reload message", but I think you will get the END_OF_TURN file.

I haven´t done this myself, but what I have seen is that (now I am on turn 15) if I open turn 10 (a turn that was played after the last patch) and replay it, to try to see how things could have been done differently, I will get the END_OF_TURN file, that I did not get when I initially played that turn.

That's curious, I was in the Beginners tournament over on gamesquad ( and got soundly trounced by MurphStein I might add) and started with the Beta patch and didn't have any .SAL fiels, but as soon as i loaded the final patch, I began getting end of turn .SAL's generated.

I think my problem is that I did not play any turns with the beta patch.
