The Extreme again were stopped and punted to the Avengers. From about 63 yards out the Avengers 2nd RB ran a sweep and broke a tackle near the LOS and then with some nice blocks went down the sideline to give the Avengers a 21-3 lead. The Extreme came right back and moved the ball upfield. This SS shows the Extreme running a trap play from the FS formation, the HB takes it down to about the 8 yard line.

The Extreme complete a pass to about the 3 and then the from the trips formation the QB has two receivers open and hits the WR in the corner of the endzone to bring the score to 21-10 at halftime.

Yes, that is my worry too. I haven't started my league yet (waiting for 2.1), but it is not going to be too much fun if I win all or most of my games all the time...worried...[sm=sad-1361.gif]

I agree, so far out of 7-8 games only 2 have been competitive.  That said there have been moments when the other teams have marched right down the field on my team and there have been full quarters or more when my team has not been able to get moving.  Im using the playbooks that I created that shipped with the game, maybe slightly later versions.  I hadnt play tested them as extensively as they are in this league.  Im seeing a number of areas that I need to change in the defenses. There are alot of very agressive defensive plays in these playbooks, which works real well vs many things.  But I see now that I have to some how have SA back in each defense that can make the tackle on RB that could brake a long run. The main thing that is killing the other teams is the fact the Avengers have probably at least 3 long (50-80yard) runs for TDs each game, there are many times they have 3 and outs, but then bang the long TD run. The Avengers are using the one back offense that I created, it does a good job of attacking outside with sweeps and counters.  Many of the defenses work pretty good vs them, but with some all the defenders end up to close to the LOS and if the back gets good blocking and gets outside they are gone.  I like the running game and always draft the fastest RB available, the 3 avengers RB have speed ratings of 90, 87 and 85, all 3 have the potential to break long runs.

So Im going to work on the defenses to try to offset the long run capablitity of th offense.  Overall the defenses have been pretty effective vs the passing game, the blitzs the LB, CB and SA cause problems for the offense, but then again create some openings vs the run.

One other thing I have seen for awhile, zone defenses are pretty good vs outside runs, but weak vs inside runs.  On the other hand m2m defenses are good vs the inside runs, but are more likely to give up the long run outside.

Another thing I may do is to lower the max of the RB speed range in the maindata file.  I lobbied David to increase the speed of LB, DL and RB, which he did, but maybe the RB is about 2 to high.

But even then the more proper fix is to have defenses with defenders in position to elimiate or cut down on the long runs.

I've almost got a playbook ready to post. The defenses save for a couple of plays all have at least one Safety back in some sort of zone coverage. The other thing I've done is on zone plays the defenders in underneath coverage have a Read assignment instead of zone. It seems to work to make a more realistic run defense, as well as allowing for a more realistic zone coverage.

Giving ILB a read instead of a zone may be just the thing, think I will try it! 

Another thing I might try.  In the 42 defense, to stop runs in many of the plays I have the SA reading.  Problem is if they read to quick the run up toward the middle, if the play is a counter or sweep they then get caught up inside instead of being outside were they are needed.  So I may give them a wait for logic followed by the read, also I think I will reposition them a little further outside.

I'm still a noob in MaxFB. But made tons of plays back in the FBPro days. So I don't know for sure how they will convert. But it always seemed to me the best bet was like 21SEC said to have the LBs do a read and have the DBs in deep zone coverage. The best overall defense I ever made looked something like this:


CB FS CB
(these 3 in deep zones)


OLB SS MLB OLB
(these 4 reading)

And 4 DL either run rushing or usually pass rushing


I'm not sure if this one translates well to MaxFB yet. But I'll be testing it out soon.

I tried to draw that out, but it took away the spaces between the players. I usually had the 3 deep guys lined up deep and the SS up in an ILB type position with the OLBs fairly wide. Very vanilla in concept, but it always seemed to be solid and rarely ever gave up big plays.

Zone coverage doesnt always work that well specially the deep zone guys  dont cover zones as well as they did in FPSFB.  Im going to look at all my defenses and play around with giving the LB read logic and also work on getting more depth in the defense to avoid the big plays.

I think to make the cpu teams more competitive, it is necessary to spend some time on them. Make team specific playbooks. Or at least a number of playbooks geared towards a specific type of team. Run team, pass team, etc.

I try to make Team Profiles that would have a matching playbook. Once you do this, the team profile will keep the teams roster stocked for the specific playbook. Obviously, draft position would determine how well this goes yearly.

I have done something similar, there are the playbooks I created, one back, two back and pro passing, for each I created a team/draft profile which fits the offense primarily, with defenders thrown in.  Each of those playbooks has a 42 def version and a 34 def version, so in a league of 12 teams I can two teams using each playbook so there is a lot of variety.  As more people create playbooks I will probably add them to my leagues, it would be great to have a 12 team league with each team using a different playbook.

One thing I didnt meniton above is that more work also needs to be done playbook offensive and defensive profiles.  For the playbooks that I created I tried to at least do profiles so that defensive plays would be matched to formations, so that the CPU wasnt calling a defense to cover 2 WR when the offensive formation had 4 WR in the game.  From the games I have been playing I dont think the goalline profile is working, have seen teams inside the 5 several times and the defense was still using either the 42 or 34 instead of the goalline.

Just spent some time and went through each of the 42 defensive plays.  Made a number of changes and will have to now make some changes to the profiles, some of the defenses now cant really be used vs 4 R formations. Will also try to make changes in the 34 and the profiles.  I will be gone now until Sunday night, but will post the updated playbooks as soon as I can.

Should mention that I have a number of college type playbooks done vs  a college 43 and 52 defenses, will get those uploaded as well.

Looking forward to the updated defenses, league.  I've been using the stock defensive plays in 2.0 myself since the update, as I've found they work very well in MANY situations, especially with using well-contstructed corresponding profiles and my VERY SLIGHT tweak to the man2man coverage in the constants file to make passing a little less easy in coach mode.

I agree about the goalline sets too, it seems like the CPU has stopped paying attention to using the profile calling for their use inside the in my experience as well.  I've largely copied the defensive profiles found in most 2.0 playbooks into my custom defensive playbook, so maybe they are overriding the goalline situational defensive calls.

And yes, I 100% second your thoughts completely on reducing the RB speed in the default attribute settings when creating a new league.  Speed kills IRL football, but especially so for RBs in MaxFB.  I can run the same 3-4 plays with a 72-74 speed RB and get pretty realistic stats, but if you put in any back with a speed over 80 you are looking at 10+ yards a carry for the game, regardless of defensive sets or profiles - at least for now.  Even runs up the gut are not safe, because if you break a tackle with a speed back, you can count on picking up at least 15 more yards in many situations.  Once the tweaked defenses are out, I'll probably update my playbooks with them and modify the stock speed ranges for RBs in my fictional league to ensure none are going to be faster than a 78 or so...

I have most of the defenses edited, but do to some changes in m2m coverages I going to have to change the playbook profiles some so that there arent formation/defensive play mismatches.  Should be able to upload the edited playbooks tomorrow.

See the thread I started in the PDS section.  I have updated the playbooks I did for MF2 and they are now available in the unsorted section of FBmax, file name  "NML MF2 pro playbooks update".  Now to get back to league play, hopefully all the changes will make for better CPU defenses and more competitive leagues.
