Sigh. I wonder how long Singapore will take to fall. Well, at least another week, since I need to rest my units now after this failed attack. The only bright spot is that I didnt lose too many troops, and that he lost more than I. I will move out the three most damaged engineer units though, they will rest and refit at Johore Bharu, and then return for another attempt in a week or so. I hate the Brits.

I have ordered another strike today, but our airforce has been reinforced with two Zero groups and four Sally groups. Im not sure whether he is going to try to defend or flee. If he tries to meet me in the skies, Im going to have more than 120 Zeros escorting the 300+ bombers tomorrow. Should be interesting if he tries to defend the base. Otherwise its just a matter of time. Koepang will be closed within a week, and after that I will swamp the area with ASW taskforces. A few weeks later I will bring in my BBs for shore bombardment and about a week after that the invasion force will arrive.

Hortlund -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test, Hort (J) vs Castor Troy (A) (12/16/2007 11:36:22 AM)

We have had a discussion about houserules. Castor believes my strike consisted of too many aircraft. He didnt say it outright, but I think he is of the opinion that I stacked too many aircraft at kendari. I told him I was not aware we were playing with that houserule because I thought I had seen "too large" airstrikes coming out of India. anyway, it was certainly not my intention to violate any houserule, so I have offered to replay the latest two turns. Meanwhile, this is how the day went.

Its strikes like these that made me think we didnt have that houserule. I (think I have) seen larger numbers than this come from that base.

The KB minus Akagi and Kaga cleared the straits of Batavia yesterday. They are now off Tilijap heading to the Timor area. I think I can sneak them in by taking the long route. Ive also got a surface combat TF led by the Yamato coming the same way. That, together with two divisions should be enough to subdue Koepang. Ive got 9 BBs, the KB, massive air support, two divisions and five special ASW hunter-killer groups. That should be enough.

And we storm ashore at Koepang.

[image]local://upfiles/1562/E3777E4B93D04F7195C01894A1336D25.jpg[/image]

Two divisions are tasked for the assault. Today the 56th arrived, tomorrow the Imperial Guards will hit the beaches. As you can see, the allies have reinforced the base considerably. 30th Aus brigade and the 2nd Aus Cavalry division. I hope my forces will be enough for them. Im coming with ~800 assault points, but maybe that wont be enough.

My other forces in the area are my 8 BBs that so far have performed abysmal bombardments, in three runs I have only disrupted 800 + 200 + 100 squads. Quite pathetic. Tomorrow the Yamato group returns after resupplying ammo at Kuching.

I have the KB two hexes off Koepang, but I dont want to use the dive bombers on Kopeang, I fear my losses will be too severe. I also have four ASW groups roaming the area. As you can see, the area is heavily sub infested. Im going to land the Imperial Guards, try one attack, and then take it from there. I can bring in another three divisions if I have to, but I really prefer not to.

dekwik -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test, Hort (J) vs Castor Troy (A) (1/3/2008 5:45:13 AM)

Very interesting AAR Hort. I'm playing CHS Nikmod and the flak damage really makes a difference. The inability to close down airfields like Singa without major losses/major efforts makes such a difference. Allies have a real chance to resupply and hold out for who knows how long. Japan should benefit a lot on the other side in 1944/45 though.

Hortlund -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test, Hort (J) vs Castor Troy (A) (1/3/2008 1:13:43 PM)

Thanks, nice to hear that someone is reading the AAR :)

Flak in nikmod is a killer. Ive reinforced my forward airfields with lots of AA now.
I have 3 AA units at Lauterm and 5 at Koepang (both on Timor), Mandalay has 4, Akyab 1, Mytkinta just got reinforced with 3. Basically Im taking all my AA units and moving them to the forward bases that are vunerable to air attack.

Hortlund -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test, Hort (J) vs Castor Troy (A) (1/4/2008 2:30:05 PM)

Things are slowing down some now as the last allied base in the SRA has fallen. Im going over on the defensive, and Castor has said that he is preparing his first counterattack.

Time to organize the Japanese defences.

I have decided to divide my forces into five different commands.

16th Army Kawajelein- Responsible for the defence of the Tarawa - Kawajelein - Wake-area.

14th Army Rabaul- Responsible for the defence of the Rabaul- Port Moresby - Guadalcanal-area.

25th Army Soerebaja- Responsible for the defence of the Palembang - Java - Timor-area.

15th Army Rangoon- Responsible for the defence of the Burma - Malaya-area.

Perimeter - Responsible for the defence of the areas outside the four major defence areas. Most notably Noumea, Johnston Island-Palmyra-Christmas Island and the Aluetians.

Each defensive area will have one or more primary bases. This base will be in a temperate zone, and the defensive units will rotate to that primary base for R&R after time on the defensive line. The primary base is the one listed in red above. The primary base will also be "The Alamo" for each defensive area.

While these areas will be the main defensive effort for 1942/1943, there will also be four bases where our strategic reserves will be located. Here we will keep large airunits that can quickly shift around between the defensive areas. These strategic locations are: Singapore, Manilla and Truk. These are the bases units will go to for extended R&R. These bases will also serve as hubs in the supply network. Large convoys will bring fuel and supply here, and smaller, combat ready convoys will ship the supplies from the hubs down the line.

There is also another defensive area, we can call it "inside defence". This is the ASW-effort. I will base ASW taskforces in most ports along my SLOCs, each port will also have a Sally or Helen airwing on ASW duty. The aircraft will locate and attack subs, and the ASW taskforces will move to intercept. This is how I intend to win the ASW-battle. Lots of highly trained and superbly led ASW TFs. I will not use more escorts than one MSW per convoy, all my ASW-assets will be in these ASW Hunter/killer-groups.

Hortlund -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test, Hort (J) vs Castor Troy (A) (1/4/2008 5:10:07 PM)

Things are slowing down significantly now. I will need this time to reorganize my units, some are scattered all over the map. One of the reasons for this is because I tried a new strategy as the Japs this time, where I emphasised speed over carefulness.

I also had a lot of setbacks on the way. we can take the adventures of one of the Japanese divisions as an example.

48th Division, stared the war by landing at Khota Bharu. After that I sea-lifted it to Johore Bharu in a failed attempt to encircle the Malaya Army. It was evacuated from Johore Bharu to instead assault Palembang, from Palembang to Batavia. From Batavia it marched to Soerebaja, then it was brought back to Johore Bharu to help finish off the Singapore defenders. After Singapore it went to Manilla, and now its going back to Soerebaja to become part of the Java forces.

I made several misstakes like this one, where I saw an opening, went for it, but failed to achieve the required odds, bogged down and had to do it all over again, more thoroughly, with more forces. In the meantime, his airforce and subs took a heavy toll on my transports and destroyers.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/09/41

I was planning to have these two brigades wait on their ships until Kuching fell, and then unload into the port to avoid these losses. However, the rapid advance in this area requires me to be able to airlift parts of one of these brigades tomorrow (to Kragen). Therefore I am forced to unload them now, and take these losses.

There are currently 3 brigades at Kuching. One (or rathter parts of one) will be airlifted to various locations on Java, and the other two will land directly into Batavia in three or four days. [/color]

Wow, airlifting a whole bde - just two days after the war starts - to Java! How about even more exploits?

Well, Hi Pauk, glad you dropped by.

Apparently you think it is an exploit to move units too far into allied territory on turn 0. Well, I disagree. It would have been a risk, certainly, but it was not impossible. And since we didnt have any houserules against it, I really dont see a problem with it. Its certainly nothing like the "lets bomb an empty base to make our pilots expert"-exploit you seem so fond of.

pauk -> RE: Taking the nikmod to the test (1/7/2008 1:34:03 PM)

And here I was thinking that it was up to the players to decide on what houserules to use. Silly me.

The reason I havent had a game last longer than May 42 is because the last time I played into May 42 I was allied, and the Japs surrendered after I managed to defend Java. Not much to do about that.

LOL, "but the bases are not empty", great defence.

Everybody knows that its a huge exploit to have your airunits gain experience by doing mikruns like you are doing. Why do you think they are changing the way experience works for AE?

And I get to post wherever I want, thankyouverymuch.
