AGAIN my carriers fail to launch. I guessed right, he ran south at full speed, and I followed him, I spotted him (he didnt spot me) and STILL MY CARRIERS WOULD NOT LAUNCH. I have 30+ Kates and 6 Zeros on those two CVES and not a single aircraft took off. BS BS BS.

Most common reason for no launch of carrier planes is weather. Second most common reason is too much enemy cap. Could either of these circumstances have arisen?

Well, it kinda depends on what carrier he has there. I have two CVEs, one with 27 Kates and one with 5 Zeros and 4 Kates. I also have 4 CS with something like 50 float-planes (almost all are on naval search). My Zeros are on escort with 20% patrol...which should mean I have 4 Zeros avaliable for escort.

If he has a "normal" british carrier, he should have what...30 fighters? If it is the Hermes, he should have 10-something? Is that enough to completely nullify the strike?

Weather was not a factor (at least not visibily so).

Now he is just being careless with his CVs. I dont know why he wants to risk his flattops in exchange for some sunk AKs and APs. I have more than enough of those.

Today he lost more aircraft than I. He also lost his CV pilots in exchange for my army pilots. I really dont understand why he wants to venture out with his CVs again. And I definitively dont understand why he wants to go up against my bases.

I know exactly what will happen tomorrow.
1) Bombardment run by cruisers on Port Moresby
2) B-17 strike on Port Moresby and/or Gilli Gilli
3) Carrier strike on the port or the airfield.

To counter this, I have moved almost all aircraft from Port Moresby to Lae. I have ordered all my Oscars and A6M3s to LRCAP over Port Moresby, while all my A6M2s are on escort for the two Betty wings I moved to Lae. Gilli Gilli is almost empty, so is Thursday Island and Port Moresby.

I have one brigade and two regiments from a division at Port Moresby, so Im not really afraid to lose it. I have a brigade at Gilli Gilli and one at Thursday island. If he wants to come, then fine by me.

Hortlund -> RE: The air war (2/7/2008 8:35:15 PM)

all is well with my shipping lines.

With the loss of the AS at Darwin, his subs have to base at Midway or Trimcomalee. Here is a snapshot of what the sea-lanes look like right now. Pretty much all the task forces are escorted by just a single MSW or PG.

Hortlund -> State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/8/2008 10:42:10 AM)

For the past two days, the allies have been focusing on Thursday Island. Massive bomber strikes from Australia have done almost no damage whatsoever. He is bombing from 21000 feet. Apparently he fears my AAA.

Meanwhile, I am not paying too much attention to his little probe of Port Moresby. I have reinforced the area, all bases have 300+ AV, he doesnt have any forces to mount a serious invasion attempt against four bases with interlocking support. If he wants to invade Port Moresby or Thursday Island, he will have to defeat the airunits at Lae, Milne Bay, Thursday Isand and Port Moresby. Thats a tall order.

Meanwhile, I am pulling back almost all my naval units to Japan. Partly because I want to repair and upgrade them, partly because I want to organize my defences for 1943, and I believe it is a good start to gather all your forces first to make it easier to portion them out.

I am gathering my entire fleet at Sasebo. All ships that are repaired and upgraded will move to port here and wait. Im gathering all my ships to be upgraded at Nagasaki. The idea is to be repaired - go to Nagasaki for upgrades - go to Sasebo for orders.

Here is the state of the capital ships of the Imperial navy.

Hortlund -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/8/2008 4:34:14 PM)

Today, he tried to send in Hudsonst at 26000 feet against Port Moresby. Amazing, that is the highest altitude Ive ever seen someone try to use their Hudsons. Raid had a 100% casualty rate with 7 shot down, and 3 ops losses. I doubt we will see more Hudsons over Port Moresby in a while.

He is stepping up the attacks in Burma again. Undoubtedly he has seen that I have returned with my fighters. I have 150 at Mandalay and 60 at Rangoon. I will just play a defensive game here.

Not much action today either. Another MSW-attempt at Akyab. Surely he must be planning an offensive here. Unfortunately Im not in any sort of position to counter that. I have my entire fleet at the Home Islands and my fighter force in Burma is not really that impressive. I have 200-something fighters with experience ranging from 65-85.

Hortlund -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/10/2008 8:07:27 PM)

Another couple of days have passed. A supply convoy reached Port Moresby, and I have enough supply for a couple of weeks there now. Ive moved in some Helens to Milne Bay to deal with the allied subs in the area. He tried to intercept my convoy, but his three destroyers were all sunk by my escorts, two CL and two DD. It was a rather amazing naval encounter, I sunk the three DDs without losses to my ships, he only hit one of my DDs with one shell.

In Burma the airbattle is heating up, and Im not sure I like that. I dont want to get suckered into an attrition war here. I am reinforcing Akyab with one division. Im bringning in the 38th from Palembang, and Im also moving in alot of AA. Problem is the base is vunerable to shore bombardment aswell. I am going to do a concentrated mining effort here, and then Im pulling out my naval assets for a while.

The mining mission will need to have lots and lots of cover, so Im going to bring in one BB and all my Burma fighters.

Other than that, not much is happening.

Hortlund -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/10/2008 9:59:54 PM)

Anyone have any ideas what I should do now for a while?

I dont think I should expect any allied invasion in the next 3 months, but after that? I think the probable list of targets are:

1) Akyab
2) Port Moresby
3) Norfolk Island
4) Baker Island

Is there anything more I should look at? I figure I can organize my defences without interruption for a couple of months now..

pauk -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/11/2008 12:40:16 AM)

You should start your ground-attack training campaign ASAP.[:D] Oh, i forgot, you consider that tactic gamey (in other players games, of course)...

Hortlund -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/11/2008 1:46:49 AM)

Ok, I will. [8D]

do you have any suggestions on the defensive positions?

jwilkerson -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/11/2008 2:14:57 AM)

Defensive Positions.

(1) Burma (Akyab, Mytchina, Hex on trail towards Kohima from Mandalay). I'd put 2 Divisions plus on Akyab and Mytchina and one on the trail.

(2) Eastern DEI - Reinforce Timor - land on Kai - and a few more spots in the area. I still worry about an early attack from here. You didn't destroy those bases, just suppressed them for a while.

(3) SOPAC/SOWESPAC - You have plenty of space to yield in SOPAC. In SOPWESPAC - Thursday Island, Port Morseby and Gili-gili are on a shorter path to the SRA, those those might garner a bit more attention.

I'd say you're ok everywhere yes.

And yes, training program. If you're playing with PDU on - I'd even rotate the planes. Switch out to Nates or Oscars while training and save the good stuff for the front line (oh yeah - you don't have any good stuff yet! [:D])

I have the Imp Guards at Mytkinta, 33rd at Akyab and one more (55th?) at Mandalay together with a brigade. Im also moving the 38th to Akyab. I have all tank regiments here in theater, aswell as many arty units. I can also reinforce here with 1 div and 1 brigade from Java. Do you think that is enough?

I have 1 + 2/3 divisions on Timor together with lots of AA and CD. Ive also got some assorted Nav Gds etc here. Is that enough? I am very reluctant to land at Kai and the other two islands, because they will be too close to the Australian airfields. It took a massive effort to neutralize Darwin, and I cant do that again against Spitfires and P38s. Soon he gets B24s too... I just want to stay as far away as possible from Darwin, and I want to defend as few bases as possible so I can concentrate AAA and combat units.

Ive got one brigade at Thursday, one brigade at Gilli Gilli and one brigade + 2/3 of a division at Port Moresby. The key here is Thursday island really...its in the temp weather zone, so I want to keep it to rotate units out of the malaria zone at PM.

In my game with Moses we both kept reinforcing. By July 43 - I had 3 Divisions and 4 Brigades plus other units at Akyab, and 2 Divisions plus other units at Mytchina and 1 Division on the trail hex. This was enough at that point in time. He had 7 Divisions and about 7 Bdes and 7 other units at Akyab, and 3 Divisions, and other units at Mytchina. I was having to rotate units back to Rangoon for recovery. But had 2-3 other divisions moving back and forth. We had a pile of guys in Burma. But everything was level 9 fortified except Akyab which was level-8.

Just different strategy I guess. I found giving him lots of targets slowed him down. You think otherwise, different opponents drive different strategies as well - there is no "magic path" to victory.

Unless you have 100+ r/d factories for a given type of plane, you will make no progress. Each 100 additional you have increases the chance. That being said, promotion more than 1-3 months in advance is almost if not totally unheard of.

Hortlund -> RE: State of the IJN, as of July42 (2/11/2008 12:38:40 PM)

Lots of action today. For some reason, he comes raiding with his CVs again off Port Moresby. He does manage to sink 4-5 empty APs and AKs, but again he is putting his CVs in harms way for no apparent reason, and again he is trading CV pilots for my Army pilots. Well, if he wants it that way, who am I to argue? Im sending some Bettys to Milne Bay to see if I can score a lucky hit or not.

My leaking CAP from Mandalay once again spilled over to the small airfield next to the base. This time it cost me 20 Oscars shot down. Im pulling all my fighters back to Rangoon now. Partly because I dont want this to happen again, partly because I need to have some aircover for my large Akyab-convoy that is gathering at Singapore.

some action today. I suspected he would try to disrupt my AK unloading supply at Thursday Island, so I sent all my fighters from Port Moresby on LRCAP over there today.

Hortlund -> RE: The air war (2/12/2008 9:16:36 PM)

Another day of airbattles over Thursday Island. Again, almost all allied bombers are damaged, and almost none are shot down.

In other news, I have finally gathered the SA-1 convoy. Yes, from Singapore to Akyab, 40 ships will carry one division, 20k supplies, a new refill of the minefield protecting the harbor (8 MLs) and a couple of artillery units. The convoy is escorted by the BB Kongo, a CL and 30 PGs, PCs and MSWs. Also two CVEs will conduct anti-ship escort together with 3 CS. This will be the first of the PEDESTAL-type convoys I run to Akyab.

We shall see how this goes... All fighter units in Burma are regrouped to Rangoon for now, Ive also got 3 bomber wings on ASW duty trying to clear up the sea-lanes to Akyab. He should spot this convoy when we pass Rangoon, which means he has three days to organize an attack on the convy. I predict fierce combat over SA-1.

Stay tuned...

Hortlund -> B17s on nav attack (2/13/2008 10:43:40 AM)

More airbattles over Thursday Island. More crap. Today he attacked with 60+ B-17s on naval attack and 25 B-25s. Im not going to comment on using B-17s for naval attack at 6000, but lets just say its a weapon the Japanese forces lack any means to defend against.

In todays airbattle, I damaged almost all B-17s, still he penetrated my defensive CAP and obliterated the hapless CL that was caught in the attack. Its annoying BS. How the **** am I supposed to defend against crap like this when it doesnt help to catch his unescorted bombers with 50 fighters and damage almost every single one of the attacking bombers?

yes , this was crappy -note altitude.
Suggest to your opponent that 17000 feet is the minimum altitude for army bombers -its a good house rule I use.

cantona2 -> RE: B17s on nav attack (2/13/2008 11:20:55 AM)

My Hr's are usually between the 12,000 and 15,000 minimum for 4e's

Hortlund -> RE: B17s on nav attack (2/13/2008 11:33:54 AM)

I suppose I should be thankful he is using them on 6000, earlier Ive seen B17 attacks coming in at 2 or 3000...

Hortlund -> RE: B17s on nav attack (2/13/2008 12:27:59 PM)

The airbattle today cost him 4 B17s and 4 B25s btw. Completely outrageous. I have 50 fighters on LRCAP at 11000, 100 bombers come in low and slow at 6000. I damage pretty much all of the bombers, but only manage to shoot down 8?

50 fighters dive in on 100 unescorted bombers and manage to shoot down 8? I wonder how the battle of Britain would have ended with kill-ratios like that.

Yakface -> RE: B17s on nav attack (2/13/2008 2:38:31 PM)

There is a problem with Nikmod, this version and the earlier version (both of which I have played).  Unfortunately it takes so many hits to down a bomber that the Allied 4E end up either getting through or aborting long before they are destroyed.  In trying to reduce the all aircraft losses 4E have become almost invulnerable - lots of damaged planes, very few brought down. At least in part it is a problem with the narrow range of damage each plane inflicts during an attack.   If it were more variable, then some would still be destroyed.

Yeah, but the problem is that the only side that benefits from this is the allied side. The jap bombers are still fragile enough to be shot down.

In effect what happens is that if 30 bombers are attacked by 60 fighters, if the bombers are japanese, they will have 25 shot down and 5 damaged, but if they are allied, they will have 25 damaged and 5 shot down.

Hortlund -> B17s at 6000 (2/14/2008 9:38:34 AM)

We have had some conversations in mail regarding the nikmod. Basically Castor believes he is punished enough by my flak, high numbers of damaged bombers, low morale, low replacement rates, low experience etc etc. This is what I replied.

Maybe you are punished in nikmod with lower experience in new pilots and lower replacement rate. That does not change the fact however, that you can get through any CAP at any time. The fact that you suffer losses and have your bomber wings damaged and with low morale for three weeks after that attack is irrelevant to the fact that you can...if you want...get through any CAP and attack any target at least once. And when you get through that CAp, anything below your bombers just die...60, 80, 100 B17s can and will destroy any target.

You will not have your pilots die and your bombers destroyed, you will just have your bombers damaged and your pilots with low morale. That is a significant advantage to having them destroyed and killed respectively. Which is what happens if I try to penetrate a lare CAP. Meanwhile I get the same losses from flak that you do, I have low replacement rates than you (this is the experimental nikmod with lower jap production, which is starting to show now) and soon my pilots will arrive with 35 exp in Japan.

I have all the 'downsides' of the nikmod, with the added bonus that when my bombers goes up against your fighters, they just die.

Hortlund -> RE: The air war (2/17/2008 6:24:38 PM)

Huge battles over Akyab today. My convoy was spotted ~6-8 hexes off Akyab, and I had to scatter it. So instead of 4 different convoys arriving at port, the ships made their own way to port depending on their speed. Most make it to Akyab and are now unloading. And that was in the nick of time! Ive spotted 25 units marching down the trail towards Akyab. The british are coming!

This is the situation at Akyab...

All in all, it was a good day. I managed to defend my ships who are now unolading, and I managed to inflict 2,5-1 losses in the air.

To achieve this I had to scatter my convoy and let the ships return to port individually. I have two larger surface combat taskforces to protect the ships, but the rest come in smaller taskforces consisting of 2-6 ships. I divided them into 2-4 transport ships escorted by 1-2 PCs or PGs. I also have several MSW taskforces and several ML taskforces.
