AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/16/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1 encounters mine field at Kwajalein (79,79)

Japanese Ships
DD Yunagi, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

[:D] Do it like Swift! [:D] Iīm copying my Allied opponent Swift in my other PBEM! The new arriving subs that were transferring from the West Coast to Australia to support the failed defense of Timor left the West Coast loaded with mines. One went to Kwajalein and itīs nice to see the DD is heavily damaged. Kwajalein is only a level 3 port but I would be really lucky if the DD would sink after only one mine hit disbanded the turn after the hit...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Ledo , at 36,25

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 79
Ki-49 Helen x 23
Ki-46-II Dinah x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 2 destroyed, 18 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 11 damaged

Allied ground losses:
67 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Airbase hits 9
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 30

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

our recon flights over the bases in Norhtern Burma showed 1) units (probably base forces) at most bases now - means no more training as I donīt want to lose my aircraft bombing at 2000 ft, 2) a cap that dropped from around 80 fighters every day to only 20+ and 3) bombers at Mandalay. This alerted us, there will be a probable strike on one of our bases in India and we were exactly right to move the 150 fighter / fighter bombers from Ledo further back, outside of IJA bomber range. Hortlund bombs an empty airfield (this is annoying as he saw a fat, dark aircraft symbol when he ordered the strike - I know how that feels as the Japanese, acting always late due to the game design). In return, a dozen Japanese aircraft were lost all over the map.

The Japanese are now in a good lead again regarding aircraft losses and of course shipping losses, in both numbers of ships lost AND points for ships lost (even though the Repulse was worth some 190 points).[:D]

Allied ground losses:

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-51 Sonia bombing at 2000 feet

unfortunately those attacks on the base forces lost somewhere deep behind the enemy lines will create some very high experienced IJA dive bombers that will surely act as ASW aircraft in the future (I want to point out that I donīt have a problem with his training at all). I guess many subs will be damaged by 100 kg AP bombs then. In the last couple of turns THREE [8|] of my subs in the area between Timor and Kendari were hit by 250kg AP bombs dropped by Helens (looks like a very high exp Helen sentai is operating out of Kendari now). One sub had 93 float dam after the hit and was lost, the other two will survive with sys dam between 30-45. Now I know what Hortlund meant when saying he wonīt need DDs for ASW he will rely on air ASW and the half dozen APDs... [:(] We have lost 3 subs so far, still a very impressive result when thinking of 60 ships sunk by subs... (I have to count the sub kills at some point but itīs SO annoying to do that)

After clicking the second time into my opponentīs AAR today Iīve changed the thread title of my AAR as we both had our niknames at the end of our AAR titles. I both times entered and 2 times later of course left Steveīs AAR and both times immediately sent him a PM that I entered his AAR by accident but didnīt read anything.

New AAR title is only "The rant goes on..."

my only 2 B17 BGs, one with 48 bombers, the other with 64. Both are fully stocked with aircraft but we wonīt see anytime soon all being combat ready. I also have recognized many fighter groups that were flying a high percentage of Cap have a lot of damaged planes. Not as severe as in Nikmod 8.x but combat readiness goes down to 60% in some squadrons. We torched nearly a dozen aircraft today, but also lost2 B-17s (replacement rate is only 16 so every B-17 lost is a little tragedy). Steveīs answer to my first long range bombing strike was: grrrrrrrrr.... [:D]

Our 4E bombers carry only 6x500lb bombs in Nikmod but we have 13 hexes range and itīs good to be able to take out the war to bases further away, so my opponent has to spread out his fighters a bit. A Wellington carries 50% more bombs than my 4Es and B-25/B-26 carry also 6x500lb bombs. I wonīt bomb resources/oil/HI on Japanese occupied Allied territory. We donīt have a HR on that and I didnīt tell Hortlund but thatīs something I just donīt like. I will use subs and aircraft to kill his ships and take the bases back. I donīt like those kind of 200+ bomber attacks to kill a ressource center in two days...

Day Air attack on Derby , at 24,85

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 107

a fighter sweep, possible preparing a follow on bomber strike? We have a huge bomber armada at Derby (8 hexes to Koepang) but no fighters, as putting them into the air would just mean we would put training targets for the IJN Zeroes into the air. A bomber strike on Derby could be fatal for us. All our bombers are set to 100% naval search so I donīt know if they are treated like sitting on the airfield when the strike comes in - we will soon see. "Normally" I would expect most of them being out on naval search if the strike comes in but in WITP you never know... Dozens of flak guns at Derby, this base should be treated as a flak base as we moved in a lot of base forces to have decent aviation support and of course they all have a lot flak guns too!

I have yet to see leaking cap being an advantage for the defender. Itīs just stupid. I donīt want to cap the hex next to my base, or even two hexes away... I have set the range to 0 so at least this should stop leaking cap but as we know it doesnīt. STUPID!!! This way my opponent can kill all my 120 fighters without having to fear to lose more than 5 aircraft... STUPID!!!

another hunter killer group is around and are attacked. We sink a PG and in return our sub is sunk immediately. 2 real hits by the PGs and 1 real hit by the APD. I really wonder if thereīs some magic date or why the PC/PG/MSW suddenly act as real sub killers with every engagement a sunken sub... [8|] Itīs not their exp. they are surely in the low 50s at best and wonīt get to 60 anyway. I used PGs for years and they didnīt reach 60... The probability to achieve suddenly so many real hits must be really low, so all I can say is that the Japanese are really lucky at the moment. My subs are moved every day of course and 80% arenīt even spotted - nevertheless they get moved...

Hortlund told me today that heīs mostly only using one escort for his TFs as every escort is a waste of efforts and I just can say that this is really the case at the moment. The single escort is enough to either make the sub not attack or the sub is even attacked by the single escort - as weīve seen so far. And this has been the experience of Hortlund in other games too. I have to say if this is really working in the GAME then weīve discovered another WRONG of the game...

I have no idea why those PCs (that sunk a S-class sub a week before) were still at Amboina. So CL Enterprise moved out to take revenge for our sunken sub (something Boise tried to do also before, but she failed). The Japanese TF was surprised and the PCs shot to pieces. I expect all four to be lost. Well, one sunk during the combat replay, the other were hit with 6 inch shells. 3x6 inch shells should finish a PC far away from the next bigger port I hope. we saw Hortlund LRCAPing Lautern were this TF was first heading to. We also sent in a British cruiser to Lautern this turn but the TF was now not anymore going to Lautern but heading West towards Koepang. We expected to engage it at Lautern, then seeing it retreating one hex out of the base hex (as it did last turn) and then it would not be anymore under LRCAP. The plan was to then sink the whole TF with the 150 heavy and medium bombers from Darwin. That was the plan. The convoy wasnīt anymore at Lautern so this was already going wrong, but nevertheless the convoy wasnīt LRCAPed as the Zeroes were still flying over Lautern (recon showed that). But then? [&:] Out of 150 bombers we get 12 taking off... oh cīmon... air HQ, huge airfield, lots of supply, no fatigue, high morale... the usual stuff... we get 12 bombers attacking a fat convoy of 10 AKs in range of 150 bombers...[:(]

at least the APD is now definetely sunk as our B-17s put 3x1000lb bombs in the ship...

Bad luck.

You have enough recon? I usually have allied bomber squadrons at 20-30% nav search in the early days when their exp is lower.

there are 48 Catalinas, a dozen Dutch patrols, 400 bombers on 10% nav search, all in range of that TF, even a sub was in the same hex that turn... [:D]

I think we even got a message of "xy plane spotted xy ship" for 90% of the ships in this TF. The detection level could not have been the problem. I bet it must be the Allied super advantage for Allied weaklings that this troll... ehhm... trollelite is speaking about all the time... [;)]

TF 1030 encounters mine field at Koepang (28,77)

CL Enterprise, Mine hits 1[8|][8|][&:][&:]

third time I have sent in a surface combat TF since Hortlund has laid mines, third time a ship hits a mine... I HAVE NEVER SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENING IN 2000+ TURNS OF PBEM... in fact I see surface or bombardment TFs RARELY hitting mines, even if I have 10.000+ mines at a base. I told Hortlund that there seem to be some very rare die rolls, but he thinks that this is the normal behaviour of WITP. Never seen something like that since UV... 3 times, 3 hits... 100% efficiency of mines... [X(][X(][X(][8|][8|][8|]

when I checked the cruiser, the mine hit must have been FOW though as it only has 4 sys damage and it started off from Darwin with 3 IIRC...

[X(] 5 near misses, 1 real hit again... next sub out of the war for 3 months... and every turn at least one sub seems to be hit by a Sally or Helen, even though I move them EVERY turn... Hortlund said he has nearly all his medium bombers for ASW already... great, eh?? [8|] he said it would be better to kill my subs with IJA medium bombers than to see his bombers being shot down by my flak... AE should have only dedicated IJA medium bombers with a nav search/attack/ASW button to interdict the use of ALL IJA bombers for anti shipping/anti sub use... same goes for Allied bombers also of course...

at least he has NOT all his IJA bombers on ASW duty... propaganda from me and from him in our emails... still, nearly every turn a sub is hit by an IJA bomber... Diamond Harbour can be considered a flak base and at the moment has 130 fighters/fighter bombers... but they were all out flying LRCAP for a British cruiser TF in the area of Diamond Harbour... fearing flak, the bombers are flying too high to do real damage to the airfield...

those bombers were coming from Rangoon... long range strike, but still with Zeroes as escorts... again the airfield is empty and those Betties should be on nav attack. We are lucky our cruisers havenīt been spotted as this high number of long range torp bombers is really freightening me. I expected to see Betties at Rangoon but more around 50 (perhaps 2 Daitais). But not 90+... LRCAP wouldnīt save my cruisers when 27 Zeroes followed by 90+ Betties going in on them... next turn will be really interesting...[:D] This turn the Japanese lost 14 aircraft with 0 lost on our side. 7 Betties and 2 Helen lost to flak, 1 Betty to ops...

Yeah, I've had this happen too - recently I had Musashi TF even remain at the base (Adak) until morning while on a night surface sweep and get pounded.

I'm not 100% sure - but at this point I think it is heavily influenced by how many OP points the TF has remaining. So in my case - ONE of the flippin' DDs was apparently short on fuel and that caused me to remain in the hex. So start your night runs closer to the target hex and make sure you start with plenty of gas .. and don't fight any battles or subs along the way ... and you should be better off. Those are my theories anyway.

the problem is that starting off nearer at the base would most likely end in my ships being spotted AND sunk! [:D] but thankīs for the explanation, something I was thinking about too. But the second later I was sure again, that I have seen it 100? 200? times that surface combat TFs sprint to a target hex and engaging all and every TFs... and if you set them to retire they always go in from max distance, in this case 6 hexes.

Itīs just like with slow BB bombardment TFs. They can move 4 hexes, engage a dozen TFs, kill all of them AND then nuke the base if enough recon was done before... [:D] so in this case I donīt understand why my DDs or CLs arenīt engaging more than the PT TF...

2 left now, this means I will send in two more surface combat TFs, to see one ship hit a mine [;)] both times, but then all of the four PTs there are gone...
