For those of you who once read Harry Turtledove's Guns of the South, I present to you:

[:'(]

It replaces the Smokeless powder upgrade, and a really pointless weapon, of which only 12,500 were made in the entire war.

You can get it from here"

My Forge of Freedom Mod Page

Beware, it's 5+ MB.

Absolutely hilarious. How's it working so far? Any stories about your exploits with it?

RyanCrierie -> RE: Guns of the South Mod (10/3/2007 10:04:07 AM)

I did just the basics of putting together the art and writeups; and testing it to see if it shows up in game - haven't had a chance to really massacre people with it...yet

By the way; is it possible to make it so that if you place items like:

ACWUpgrades.txt
Guns.txt

or

Guns.pcx
UpgradeTiles.pcx

in Scenario Folders; the game engine will load them?

So you could simply make a scenario like:

Scenarios\Guns_of_the_South_s

and it would automatically load the modded files, while leaving the original install intact?[&:]

That would take some amount of programming. (How much, I don't know.) You should add this idea to the Wish List thread, so it doesn't get overlooked. No guarantees we can do it, though.

I guess I read Guns of the South to many times. I had to try it. The first thing I did was make an Original and a Guns of the South Folder in the games' Data and GFX Folders so I could switch back and forth without reinstalling the original.

I did not put the pspbrwse (JBF File) in the Gfx folder itself. It hasn't caused any problems.

One thing I noticed, was that the Smokeless cartridge upgrade was available as well as the AK-47 after the arrival of the Time Tavelling Afrikaaners.

I have to work to keep them supplied and found the best range for my AK-47 equipped (Dragoon Tactics) Cavalry is 3 or 4.

It has been an enjoyable diversion but I think I will go back to the Original.

Gil R. -> RE: Guns of the South Mod (10/6/2007 8:24:18 PM)

So what was the result? Did the AK-47's just mow down the enemy, or were there a few left to put up a fight?

143,861 Union Force Attacked my 55,112.  There were 4 Brigades of Cavalry (13K) Dragoon Tactics Armed with AK-47.  The Union never got close to my entrenched infantry and artillery.  They did briefly hit a garrison unit in a fort before they broke.  The Union suffered 20,325 caualties to 374 for the CSA.

Neat!

If you're really dedicated, you'll create animation graphics to show what the machine guns must look like as they're firing...

That's too funny.  Pretty ingenious too!

Amazing what they can do with modern technology.
