Wyke -> Why did I do it? (10/25/2007 10:39:46 PM)

Yesterday I was at a loose end with myself. Didn't fancy cranking up MSFS-X, didn't fancy any flying. Couldn't be bothered with Med or Rome total war, it was one of those thumb up bum, can't decide what I want to do sort of days.

Anyway, out of desperation I found myself trolling about Wikipedia and came across the Steel Panthers page there. "Whaaa! Blast from the past" I thought. Then I noticed a link at the botom of the page to take me to the download site, and the rest, as they say is history.

I've not even thought about the game in what, five years. But I am totally back in love with it

What is it that has dragged me back to a game that is basically twelve years old? I don't know. I've played Total War, the Combat Mission games and several other modern war game types.
While I cannot fault any of them, while most look glorious with their 3D graphic putting right in the middle of the battle. None have ever grabbed me like SL has.

SL is old, it's graphics are more then dated, can be a bit cranky and is turn based *chuckles*. But no other game gets to me as this one does.

Nothing comes close to capturing that feeling of fear, as you are advancing a section of 'grunts' down a road hex by hex when you just know ther is an MG position somewhere close. Nothing captures that 'Oh crap' moment when you push a tanks nose into the open and that ATG opens up, and no other game has ever given that 'Phewww' moment when the ATG shot hits off centre of the hex or you hear the 'ping' sound of the shot bouncing off armour.

Steel Panthers! Wonderful game, it's so good to be back. Lets hope we'll still be playing it in another 12 years time

Wyke, listen to what this strange man (meaning me, not Alby) has to say -- the Enhanced SPWaW Mod takes the game to a higher level. Some screenshots can be found in a few AAR/DAR threads. Original programmer Michael Wood offered guidance and support to that project, so, in effect, it was the upgrade that Matrix never got around to doing. Instead, the fans of the game did it themselves.

OK, thanks for the heads up guys. But now it's time to prove just what a 'numpty' I am. What is the Enhanced Mod for SPWOW exactly.
I've had a quick look about and it seems to be about more realistic OB? Is that the case or is there more?

Thanks

As Alby said, there is more info at our Enahanced Forum. In a nutshell, we compiled a number of modified OOBs and graphics, reworked the OOBs extensively to make them more historical, added a bunch of new icons and terrain, added better sounds for a lot of weapons, and more pictures. Corrected a lot of errors and discrepancies, and a lot more. Also, 8.4 has a serious flaw in it, and the accepted model now is the 8.403, which is in the Enhanced Mod.

Kuokkanen -> RE: Why did I do it? (10/26/2007 7:04:37 PM)

I would like to say something about other Steel Panthers games out there, that have been made by Camo Workshop. While SPWAW is based on source code of Steel Panthers 3, WinSPWW2 is based on SP2. Some people prefer WinSPWW2 over SPWAW, but I guess it's mostly about matter of taste (I haven't even tried it yet). WinSPWW2 has one major advantage over SPWAW though: it is much more compatible with scenarios of original SP: SP scenarios can be get to work with WinSPWW2! In case of SPWAW, only map can be converted, and everything else needs to be done all over again. I still have SP scenario disks left that are also backed up on CD-R [:D]

Another one, also by Camo Workshop, is WinSPMBT. It is mostly update of SP2. Game is about modern wars, like Vietnam War and Gulf War. Timeline goes from 1950 to bit beyond change of millennia. Scenarios of Korean War are comparable with WW2 era games: Pershing and T-34/85 should be familiar tank models for everyone reading this (unless you're n00b [:'(]). Spice of modern era are aircrafts carrying napalm bombs: two bombing runs of hot napalm at neck of attacking North Koreans made me grin widely [:D]
In Gulf Wars Yankee Abrams and British Challenger own the battlefield: they hit more often than miss even while on the move, and their optics see through smoke. If there is heavy resistance, plan is this: smoke cover with smoke dischargers, then just blow up everything in sight!

Wyke -> RE: Why did I do it? (10/27/2007 8:21:28 AM)

OK guys
After taking onboard the advice from here, I've now downloaded and installed the Enhanced DV mod, and very nice it is too. well done on a fine job to the guys who have done it, and thankyou for all the effort you have put in, this is a real winner

Matti, I've tried both of the CAmo Workshops versions of the game, I got those about a week before I got WoW.

I think on the whole I prefare WoW, it seems a tad more challenging and I've always loved the C&C routines.

Though the one thing I do love about SPWW2, is the ability to expand your core force between battles in the campaigns. I've just started the WW2 Long campaign with a basic British Inf Coy with the idea being to see how big a battlegroup I can end up commanding by the wars end

Huffy -> RE: Why did I do it? (10/27/2007 4:06:59 PM)

Wyke,...welcome aboard, Glad to see your getting all caught up on the newest versions. The guys put alot of work into this game always making it better and better. I too owe them many thanks.
Take care,
Huffy
