Due to the threat of invasion, i have changed all my production priorities into building up a strong home island defence. Mortars, Rifles and Machine Gun companies are now the order of the day. I cannot afford to lose any ground on my home island.

I knew this was going to be hard, but did not expect an attack so early!!

Thanks for this. Gives me a good "flavor of the game." This may be one I will pick up.

I love reading this kind of stuff! It will be interesting to find out what those AI units were. Post a few more turns for us. [;)]

TURN 7 -

My first Cargo ship has landed a division on the northern most of the two small islands. I decide to set up a new HQ here. My reasons for this are 1 - to give a headquarters bonus to any forces i build up here and 2 - so the production of this island can be sent straight to this hq enabling me to form new units or expand exisiting units at this location.

I transfered 10 staff and two trucks from my supreme hq to this hq to get it started up. I am able to transfer overseas as i have two cargo ships attached to my hq, these work similar to having trucks attached to your hq for land movement. I must admit that moving units and sub-formations in this game is a breeze once you get the basics.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 1:02:39 PM)

I have also landed on the southern island and again have set up a new hq for the same reason. Unfortunately due to the distance from my supreme hq and a lack of naval transport capacity, i cannot immediatly send staff and trucks here.

The below screenshot also shows my attack on the British 10th division, which has 61 rifle companies. The attack is to be undertaken by the confederate 1st, 5th and 12th divisions whish each have 30 rifile and 10 machine gun companies. This is not a good offensive force as both rifles and machine guns are better suited to the defence. However as i am attacking from 3 sides i get a 50% concentric bonus and i am hoping that will win the day for me.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 1:08:53 PM)

DEFEAT!!

The British forces more than matched my three pronged assault on their position. Not a good start for confederate arms. However i will now add my newly made mortars and other new formations to these divisions and try again, i cannot afford the enemy getting a beach head so early on.

I cannot research this turn as each new hq costs 5 pp's so i am low on these again. I really want to invest in cruisers or subs to hit these invading troops before they land, but i need to sort out this british force first.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 1:41:59 PM)

TURN 8 -

This turn i have moved another division, the 11th into the open hex next to the british division, his will stop him landing here without an amphibious assault and means when i launch my attack he will have to surrender if i am successful. All four of these divisions now consist of 40 rifle, 10 machine gun and 5 mortar, i will also get a bonus for attacking from 4 sides.

The attack will not be this turn however, as adding new elements to a division reduces the experience of the division. For each turn you wait 10 experience is added up to a max of 40, after this you have to earn experience in battle.

I have also landed a second division on the southern island and formed a hq there. This is my best bet for expansion so i intend to get troops here and fight for the towns and production on offer here.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 1:44:29 PM)

The second screenshot of turn 8 shows my division landing on the second small island and the setting up of another hq there. When these two islands are defended strongly enough and i have researched more technology, i intend to use these islands as naval bases.

So, to sum up i have attained my early goals and now must start fighting for land. Just got to get rid of the british from my home island first...

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:00:18 PM)

TURN 9 -

This turn i suffered from anti-supply, the red circles indicate that i am losing supply through not controlling the sea lanes.

I have produced new divisions on the southern continent and hope to lonk up my two seperate forces here, then when strong enough i hope to push against the British.

Also i am now ready to attack the British division on my shore. Attacking with 4 divisions from 4 seperate hexes gives me a 100 % bonus, this along with the fact that my divisions now have more offensive punch with the mortars, l;eaves me pretty confident i can force the surrender or annihilate this unit.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:03:54 PM)

I was right to be confident. The British division takes losses and has nowhere to retreat and is therefore destroyed.

The screenshot below shows the outcome of the battle. A lot of my troops are yellow, which i think means they managed to break through the enemy lines. This would make sense as the mortars are the only units still white , and you would expect these to be firing from range.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:07:40 PM)

I have just finished off one threat, when along comes another. It seems my northern neighbours were also eying up the small islands of my north west coast. I should be able to contain and destroy this force unless the enemy sends additional divisions. It looks as if the CSA and the USA will soon be at each other...

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:10:37 PM)

To counter these invasions i have decided to research destroyers, which is i think the cheapest naval unit, i intend to make several squadrons of these as coastal defence for my newly acquired terretories.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:13:05 PM)

Finally for this turn, i will show my production. I have switched the majority of my mainland production to political points and destroyers, while production on the 'outer' part of my nation will be to produce troops.

This summary also shows which of my towns are supplying which hq's.

TURN 10 -

I think i will be able to destroy the USA division in the next turn as the ai has not sent any help for it. I have managed to setup strong defences on this island.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 4:44:03 PM)

This is scary. Firstly the British have landed another division, but this time its huge 119 rifle, 3 machine gun and 2 smg companies. The scary part is he has researched rifle II and SMG II, which means his troops will be more effective than mine and that the British are far in advance of me technolicallly.

Even more scary, the British naval unit contains a Cruiser mk II, when i havent even researched cruiser mk I yet !!!. I am now going to switch all home island production except for naval units and supplies to political points so i can invest in research. I need to beef up my navy and army and i need to have an airforce!!

Maybe i should have stuck to the normal ai level!!!

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 5:19:08 PM)

TURN 11 -

I launched a squadron of 4 destroyers from my southern base on my home island to see if i could intercept any British units and to help stop my supplies being destroyed. I bumped into another British division in transit, with 15 cargo ships!!. Unfortunately i had only a few action points left so could not inflict much damage, sinking only 1 cargo ship

Elswhere this turn, i attacked and destoyed the USA division which had landed a couple of turns ago, and i have researched cruiser to try and keep up in the naval arms race with the British -

TURN 12 -

For the first tme, an enemy regime has launched an attack on one of my divisions, The USA attempting an amhibious landing. They are defeated, at great cost to them. I managed to attack and destroy 5 British cargo vessels this turn as well. So in all this went pretty well.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 5:46:12 PM)

On the last turn i spotted some British armoured cars. As i have no research into armour of any kind i have decided to research the bazooka to prop up my divisions as at the moment i am infantry only!

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 5:50:04 PM)

I am starting to form a front on the southern island. I am wary of advancing to far due to spotting tose armoured cars, which will make mincemeat of my unprotected infantry divisions. So i pull back and aim to dig in along the main road between my two towns until i can add some hardware to these divisions.

Also of note, Since i launched my Destroyer squadron , the circles showing supply are now blue. This means i am now destroying enemy supply and have cotroll of the sea lanes.

tweber -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 6:07:27 PM)

Very interesting read so far.  I think you may have overreacted to the landings on your island.  Any army on an enemy shore without a port has a tough time with supply.  If you build some DB and protect your ports, any forces that land will soon be in trouble.  Also, I think you may have been faster on the land grab if you used paras and air transports.  With the standard unit set, ships move slowly (although this may be difficult based on your research settings).

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 6:40:08 PM)

Thanks for your comments tweber.

As i said i am only a beginner myself and the idea is for you 'experienced guys' to point out where i am going wrong, then all us begginers learn from it!!

TURN 13 -

A quiet turn, I attacked two british cargo convoys sinking 7 cargo ships, however the 3 divisions on board these vessles are unharmed and may get through. The only other thing of note is my research -

[image]local://upfiles/25496/6206E9F85CA34446ABF538A91A97CF53.jpg[/image]

I am hoping to produce enough of these to station in my front line cities and destroy enemy shipping and units that come close, then when i am ready use them to attack the british on their main island.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 7:24:59 PM)

TURN 14 -

I am assembling a fleet to controll the northern sea, however i have just bumped into this USA fleet of 6 Cruiser II's which is much more powerful than my scattered units. I think i need to combine my naval assets to take on this threat. It looks like i may be involved in my first major naval battles.

Elsewhere i sank another 3 Brithish cargo ships after they launched there divisions against my prepared positions on the south coast, resulting in the destruction of three British divisions with only minimal loss on my side.

[image]local://upfiles/25496/5C1C04EF6ECF4892AA27CF7DE78C1179.jpg[/image]

Also note the red circle with the number 69, this is the supply amount being destroyed by the presesence of this fleet.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 7:28:00 PM)

I have also researched fighters on this turn to protect my dive bomber squadrons -

Just bought the game and went through the tutorial.

Your AAR is so much better and gives a lot of insight into how things work.

Great job!

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 7:33:04 PM)

thanks lomyrin!

hope you enjoy the game as much as i am. Its early days yet but i feel this may turn out to be a classic.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/6/2007 7:51:15 PM)

TURN 15 -

The US Navy sinks two of my cargo ships. I try and group my fleets to face them for a decisive battle. They seem to have an advantage in quality whilst i have the numbers.
