Now that my southern fleet is decimated, The British are again looking to land on my main island. This means i will have to keep some troops from the main front for home defence.

This is becoming more challenging every turn. But good fun!!

Dave74, are you setting your Air Formations to "Intercept" at  all? What about some pure Fighter Groups for that purpose?

Just a quick question/kibbitz/fodder-for-discussion from your Peanut Gallery.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/10/2007 1:37:10 AM)

thanks slowhand,

i have already started doing this. i should have decent numbers of fighters in a turn or two.

Those red guys look like they are kicking butt. I am worried about them!

CTB123 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/10/2007 2:51:26 AM)

Great AAR!  I look forward to more.

Reading it does bring a couple of questions to mind regarding the time (or lack of) for research and production to be completed.  It looks like technology upgrades are automatically granted to all eligible units on the same turn the points are spent on research?  So all Fighter I's automatically become Fighter II's the same turn as the research is commenced?

It also appears you can build major units, ships and etc in one turn.  Does anyone care to elaborate on these areas more?  I am used to games like Hearts of Iron, the Civ series, GGWaW and etc in which some time passes from when research or production is commenced to when you get the benefits.  I am getting hung up on the idea of instant return, but it does not seem to be an issue for folks playing the game.

Thanks!

Tony

It's all percentage-based: you allocate your resources at each city to several different units. If you choose to devote 100% of your effort to one particular unit and the city is large and is connected by roads to your HQ, then major units can be produced quickly. I think this works well in the game's favor as it don't allow for close games to bog down too much. I'm not the best expert in the upgrades department.

The challenge in this game isn't to build stuff, it's to get stuff to the front and fighting.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/10/2007 10:29:04 AM)

I am worried about them as well! They are not only more numerous but more technoloogicaly advanced than me.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/10/2007 10:31:39 AM)

CTB123,

Units do not automatically upgrade, when you do research you then have to spend supply points to upgrade, which i suppose is not too dissimilar to HOI2.

As prevoiously mentioned if you devote enough production at a city to a unit it will be produced in one turn, but its experience starts off poor and you really want to wait a few turns befre front line deployment.

TURN 34 -

The British airforce is becoming a real pain. They managed to destroy one of my divisionsw with a large airstrike -

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/12/2007 5:54:41 PM)

The British also attempt to break my lines with land based attacks. I beat these off then counter, pushing the British Units back and destroying their local HQ -

[image]local://upfiles/25496/17F371C8E195494690818BAE1C5E4740.jpg[/image]

In this screen you can also see the bulk of my airforce. My plan is to attack the British city to the south of me, drawing their airforce out and hopefully eliminating it with my superior fighters.

Elsewhere its quiet on the US front, i sank a few cargo ships but nothing else happened. The Soviets seem to be destroying the Germans pretty easily. I think it will be my turn soon!!

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/12/2007 6:17:31 PM)

TURN 35 -

I manage to attack several Soviet convoys, destroying numerous cargo ships and cruisers. This is in line with my plan to stop the soviets from destroying the US therefore holding him back a little.

The worrying thing is the name of a land unit i have spotted, which gives me a terrifiying insight into the size of ths soviet army....

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/12/2007 6:19:39 PM)

My plan of drawing out the British planes did not work as they were not base where i thought. My airforce has done a decent amount of damage to this city, reducing its production by over 25 %.

Have you thought about throwing everything you have at the Soviets to try to help out the Germans? Otherwise, once the Germans are gone it looks like you are next.

Just a thought...

Yes i have but the germans are ai+ which means they can produce more than me so should be able to hold the soviets for a while, so im using them as a buffer at the moment.

I have decided to try and take out the British first, then use this extra production to attack the soviets. Its going to be tough.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/12/2007 8:24:54 PM)

TURN 36 -

A bit quieter this turn, Ive pushed the British further back and am now trying to get some new divisions down there.

The Soviets look like they are geting sick of me destroying their supply routes and are attempting to send troops to my northern shores -

PDiFolco -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/12/2007 11:23:03 PM)

Just noticed - the transported units PP appears on the Sov unit, I suppose they shouldn't as the guys can't fight, we should just see the Cruiser PP.

Warspite3 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 3:33:31 AM)

Awesome! More of dave's updates. The 399th division?? [X(] Oh no, this could get ugly. As for me, ugly was not the word for the game I personally played, what would be beyond ugly is more like it for my disaster.

Punzer -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 7:50:34 AM)

Yeah, I like the Brits too (but, of course, I would so lose this fight [:'(]). How's your navy?

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 12:25:08 PM)

TURN 37 -

I attacked the weak British line and managed to take one of their cities, this resulted in me also destroying a lot of his air and sea units as well -

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 12:29:04 PM)

This is the situation on the British front. So far i have tried to use large formations, but with so many battles going on and fronts to manage i am going to have to start producing smaller units to fill out the lines.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 12:30:42 PM)

Also this turn i finally get around to research again. I have saved up for this one, as it is an area i can have an advantage as my enemies seem to be concentrating on researching armour and ships -

Pika,

My navy seems pretty strong. I have destroyed a lot of US and Soviet fleets. I think it is my navy that is buying me time to fight my land battles so i am glad i researched here early!

Vic -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 12:47:21 PM)

One thing i am noticing is that the AI has a cargoship building fixation.

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 1:04:52 PM)

I would agree with this Vic, i think it could do with less cargo ships and more protection. I think i have sank over 500 cargo ships in this game so far, but i have played so many strategy games before where the ai is not capable of amphibius attacks i am still very impressed with the ai in Advanced Tactics.

Maybee just needs a little bit of a tweak for the ai's build priorities?

dave74 -> RE: A Beginners Guide To Randon Maps... By A Beginner!! (11/13/2007 1:07:26 PM)

TURN 38 -

Not a great deal happening this turn. I have set up a new HQ for my British offensive, so the units there are re-organising. I have again thwarted russian amphibius attacks on my northern fronts, here is a look at my navy, showing my strongest fleet -

TURN 39 -

I have attacked the German units around the central town that the germans and soviets have been fighting for. I aim to get in position to take this town in the next turn or two before ths soviets can get it.
