I would place being a U.S. Army Recruiter at the top of your list! I was one and it was one of the worst jobs/career fields i've ever worked in. It sucked big time.[:D]

If you don't make "Mission"(IA-IIIA)(monthly and quarterly) your really, really pressured with the lose of your career(bad evaluations). For mid career NCO's and Officers this can be the end of the line if you fail. The hours are really long, including weekends. If your making mission its almost a great job. My hat is off to any Regular Army or Marine recruiter trying to make mission during this times. It must be even harder.[X(]

Being a government employee is tough, too. Managerial incompetence always gets passed down to the employees, and it is a killer for morale and productivity.

My job as a tax auditor DOES have its own rewards, especially when I can help out someone who is not well off and can't afford a paid tax preparer.

Contrary to popular belief, the bureaucracy is populated by real people. At the actual working level, we do the best we can given the multitude of restrictions we are put under.

The managers and lawmakers really DON'T have a clue, and what's worse, they could care less as long as they look good in the media.

Zap -> RE:worst/most dangerous jobs in America (11/16/2007 10:02:14 AM)

And here is a list of the most dangerous jobs in America. I make it on the bottom of the list as a Truck Driver.

The 10 most dangerous jobs in America

The workplace death rate continued to fall in 2002, but some jobs remain staggeringly risky.

By Kim Khan

Loggers and fishermen faced the most daunting odds of dying at work in 2002, but the highways remained the most dangerous place for American workers.

On-the-job accidents and homicides claimed the lives of 5,524 Americans last year, down 6.6% from 2001. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the workplace death rate is the lowest it has seen since recordkeeping began in 1992.

Of that 5,524, only 104 were timber-cutters, but those fatalities represent a death rate nearly 30 times that of a typical workplace. Loggers died at a rate of 117.8 per 100,000 workers, the BLS said, with most of them killed by falling trees. The death rate for American workplaces as a whole was 4 per 100,000. (That's among occupations with more than 30 fatalities in 2002 and more than 45,000 employed.)

Fishing was the second most dangerous occupation, with 71.1 deaths for every 100,000 workers, followed by pilots and navigators, 69.8, structural metal workers, 58.2, and, perhaps surprisingly, drivers-sales workers, which include pizza delivery drivers at 37.9.

Roofing is another dangerous job, with 37 deaths for every 100,000 workers. Electric power installers, farm occupation, construction laborer and truck drivers also made the top 10.

The 10 most dangerous jobs
Occupation Fatalities per 100,000
Timber cutters 117.8
Fishers 71.1
Pilots and navigators 69.8
Structural metal workers 58.2
Drivers-sales workers 37.9
Roofers 37
Electrical power installers 32.5
Farm occupations 28
Construction laborers 27.7
Truck drivers 25

I think they should have put at the top of the list Military Service.

JudgeDredd -> RE: RE:worst/most dangerous jobs in America (11/16/2007 12:07:47 PM)

I'm not sure they want to advertise the the danger of working in the Military when they are still actively and desparately recruiting.

It was probably up there, but asked to be removed!

SemperAugustus -> RE: RE:worst/most dangerous jobs in America (11/16/2007 2:00:56 PM)

Military isn't that dangerous in the US, there are many more job categories that have higher levels of injuries due to violence. I think they still have more injuries due to traffic accidents.

I think the most dangerous job in at least the UK was divers working on North Sea oil rigs.

The OP's list seems to be almost exclusively "worst" and not "most dangerous".

Many years ago when I first entered the professional world it was an acepted axiom that Dentist was one of the worst jobs in America as they had the highest suicide rate of any professional. Apparently they are very susceptible to complexes as "everyone hates the dentist".

My profession of Architect is recognized as a very high stress job as we are constantly having to make back flips through flaming hoops to meet impossible deadlines and is a profession with one of the highest divorce rates.

Personally, I believe grease trap cleaner is one of the worst jobs anywhere. As a part of a hospital renovation I once had to climb into a huge underground grease trap.....never, never again!

Hans, the 10 most dangerous list is a few post down. I've added the Dangerous list to my opening post.

Well, a Dentist has to look in peoples mouths all day long. God that must get ugly after a while. Might even be worse than looking in peoples a55es all day long.

I suppose there could be another list of jobs that drive one to insanity.

I would suggest Hollywood stars. Sure are a lot of nutty actors.

How about dictators? You think it's easy to manage and repress all living souls within your land? And what about the ever present threat of assassination? Lose a lot of sleep over that. Just ask Hitler or Stalin ( or anyone of them, really) [sm=00000506.gif]
