Just fired up my first game last night. I haven't played this series since the CC3 version which is still to this day one of my favorite games ever.

The first thing that jumped out at me was how much more lethal the battlefield is! I used to feel that I could protect my men to some extent with cover and stealth.

Now it seems that once the enemy discovers you, you have about 3 seconds to either kill them or GTH out of wherever you are or you are dead.

Mortars are particularly deadly. In fact, in the absence of vehicles or off map assets, its pretty much the dominant weapon. Is there more than one type of ammo because one of my mortar strikes cause multiple simultaneous explosions followed by the sound of multiple burning buildings. It seemed to cover an area about the size of 2 buildings. The effect was quite impressive. I would not want to have been on the receiving end of it, whatever it was!

I love the replay. Its pretty cool to see what was really going on with the other side.

The game is pretty much the same as far as game mechanics although it looks, sounds and runs much better, IMO. But its a whole new battlefield. A much bigger and more dangerous battlefield.

Tactics are definitely much more important these days.

But artillery is the king of the battle and accounts for the lionshare of the kills. As a Japanese soldier from Iwo Jima put it: "The infantry is there so that when some die the generals know where to direct the artillery fire"

but yes compared to CC5 the mortar teams are killers. i used one to take out two APC's and immoblise a tank.

AFV's can die easily also.  Gone are the days where you can just send a tank to pound on a building until all occupants die.  This time, the occupants can fire back with a lethal ATGM.

Yes, along with the RPG-7s we are accustomed to seeing on the news these days, Opfor has quite a deadly array of anti-tank weapons. To bolster the Opfor, they have RPG-16s (the most widely used Anti-tank weapon emplyed by the soviets in their afghan war), RPG-27s, RPG-29s and AT-13 ATGM.

According to reports, the Israeli's lost almost 50 Merkavas in their invasion of southern Lebanon due to RPG-27s, RPG-29s and AT-13s.  The British confirmed, that a Challenger II was destroyed and the crew killed, when a rocket from an RPG-29 penetrated the front glacis plate in Basra. The RPG-27 and RPG-29 are quite deadly because they emply tandem warheads, with the first designed to defeat applique armor or ERA, and the primary warhead remains intact to defeat the main armor
