hawker -> Best fighter in WW2??? (11/23/2007 11:03:55 PM)

I know that this is probably chewed million times but this topic should be interesting.

Which is the best fighter in WW2?
Let jets stay aside in this.

For me:

1. Lavochkin La-7
2. P-51 "Mustang"
3. FW-190
4. Ki-84 "Hayate"
5. Me-109k
6. Vickers supermarine Spitfire
7. P-38 "Lightning"
8. F4U "Corsair"
9. A6M2 "Zero"

That is the top nine,from best to worse[;)]

Big B -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 2:06:00 AM)

Not in order of best to worst - but just very successful aircraft designs (all world-class I think):

Bf-109
FW-190
Supermarine Spitfire
P-38
P-47
P-51
F4U
F6F
A6M (*)
KI-84
LA-7
Yak-3
Macchi C.202/205
Fiat G.55

(* - for it's time, couldn't compete late war)

Andy Mac -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 2:25:18 AM)

In terms of strategic importance Hawker Hurricane accept no substitutes - <takes cover> [:D][:D]

Don't run [:)], I had a very tough time leaving that one off my list above - and I agree with you.[;)]

Joe D. -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 2:34:32 AM)

I don't know what all the anxiety in this thread is about, but my picks are:

P-51D as the previous models -- prior to the Merlin engine -- were for ground support
Fw 190D (Dora), another low-slung monoplane
Seafire, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk that lasted until the Korean War

And ...
F4U Corsair and P-47 Thunderbolt as best fighter-bombers; although both had the double-wasp engine, the carrier capable Corsair outlasted the P47

Honorable Mention
Bf 109 -- esp. the 109F -- and the A6M series; both were ground-breaking aircraft, but over time they couldn't keep up w/the competition.

Ian R -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 3:02:54 AM)

F4U Corsair fan. But the Mustang outranges it. Spitfire wins the best looking award. Why isn't the Ki100 on the list?

Tiornu -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 4:47:55 AM)

I'll mention a fine book, Duels in the Sky by Eric Brown. It gives only one man's opinion, but Brown isn't just any man.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 4:59:41 AM)

Republic P-47D..."There can be only one"

Hm I've always thought that the Bf109K was a good match for contemporary allied and soviet fighters?

Have i been wrong ?

No, you're not wrong: as the last Messerschitt version to be made in any significant numbers, the 109K suffered from a lack of fuel and trained pilots, both of which were in short supply for the Luftwaffe in the last months of the war (Source: The Encyclopedia of Aircraft of WW II)

BrucePowers -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 4:18:49 PM)

P51D gets my vote.............

... Why isn't the Ki100 on the list?

It should be re Wikipedia:

"An overall assessment of the effectiveness of the Ki-100 rated it highly in agility and a well-handled Ki-100 was able to out-maneuver any American fighter including the formidable P-51D Mustangs and the P-47N Thunderbolts ... The Ki-100 was a deadly opponent and together with the Army's Ki-84 and the Navy's Kawanishi N1K-J (were) the only other Japanese fighters being (sic) able to defeat the latest Allied types."

The only issue w/the Ki-100 was that its engine (Ha-112-H) performance diminished at high altitudes vs. B-29s and their escorts.

Sorry: double-posting!

I'll nominate the A-1 Skyraider - how many of the others shot down a Mig-17? [:D] http://www.midwaysailor.com/midway1960/1960flightops.html

My vote is the Cylon drone ship...

Cylon Raider or Colonial Viper?

Big B -> RE: Best fighter in WW2??? (11/24/2007 7:09:48 PM)

I think officially, he was the best fighter of WWII [;)]

I wouldn't debate the Ki-100s maneuvering ability, but it should be noted that the P-47 was not really built for exceptional maneuvering. With its powerful engine, armor and guns it was more a flying tank.
