I don't know what all the anxiety in this thread is about, but my picks are: P-51D as the previous models -- prior to the Merlin engine -- were for ground support Fw 190D (Dora), another low-slung monoplane Seafire, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk that lasted until the Korean War And ... F4U Corsair and P-47 Thunderbolt as best fighter-bombers; although both had the double-wasp engine, the carrier capable Corsair outlasted the P47 Honorable Mention Bf 109 -- esp. the 109F -- and the A6M series; both were ground-breaking aircraft, but over time they couldn't keep up w/the competition.
