Hi,

I was just wondering how powerful the Avenger torpedo bomber hits compared to other torpedo planes?

I just played the Phillipene Sea scenario (the Raise the Dead variant), and was suprised when Yamato was sunk by only three torpedo hits. To prove this wasn't just bad luck, the Americans repeated the performance by sinking Musashi with only two torpedo hits! (Both ships were in mint condition).

I had a look in the editor and the Yamato class has a vulnerability of 5 which is pretty good, but the two ships died to fire that a mere heavy cruiser would almost shrug off!

There was a thread on the WitP forum to the effect that the Yamato was able to take a dozen or so torpedo strikes because they hit all at once; had the strikes been sequential over time, she would have sunk well before the last torpedo headed her way.

The point was that a few well-placed fish should have been the death knell for the Yamato over time; one player even sunk her w/one very well-placed fish in WitP/UV.

Hmm. Well these were almost simultaneous. I think yamato took two hits in one volley then a third 5 min later, while Musashi took its two from one attack run. May have just been luck - will replay the scenario and see how we go.

Even 3-4 hits all on the same side should not greatly endanger a Yamato class ship.  They had some defects in their torpedo bulkheads that allowed flooding in where it should not have gone, but even with that taken into account it took a LOT of airial fish to put either of them down.  The main thing learned from sinking Musashi was to try to torpedo one side or the other, this would cause stability issues and capsize the ship - but even with that Yamato took a lot of damage before she went down.
