sstevens06 -> PO Airmobile Assault (11/27/2007 4:25:48 AM)

I'm attempting to simulate a fairly large airmobile assault on the evening of 6 Oct 1973 by Egyptian Ranger (commando) units in my Suez Canal 1973 scenario. This scenario is specifically designed for the PO to play the Egyptian side.

What I've noticed in numerous playtests is that the PO will not launch the airmobile assault unless the Israeli Air Superiority level is quite low. This behavior seems consistent with the statement in the "Whatsnew" document for v3.2.29.27:

quote:

10. Helicopters and Equipment transported by helicopters now take less damage. You need an air superiority ratio (including local AA) of 4:1 to be safe. With lesser ratios, the casualties will mount quickly. Previous safe level was 10:1.

Historically the Egyptian Rangers were transported to their destinations in various strategic locations in the Sinai in the face of pretty formidable Israeli Air Superiority. Israeli sources claim up to around 20 Egyptian helicopters were shot down, primarily by F-4 Phantoms and Mirage IIIs, during this airmobile assault. Egyptian sources admit fewer helicopters shot down, but acknowledge serious losses during the assault.

My question is whether there is any way to force the Egyptian PO to launch the air assault regardless of Israeli Air Superiority level?

My experience with pre-v3.2.29.27 playtests was that the Egyptian PO would launch the airmobile assault most of the time, sometimes with heavy losses to the helicopters and forces being transported by them. I seem utterly unable to replicate these results in the latest version: either I leave the Israeli Air Superiority level during that turn set very low and the PO launches the airmobile assault with little or no losses, or I keep the Israeli Air Superiority at a reasonable level and the PO invariably refuses to launch the assault at all.

It's too smart for its own good?

I've had problems in the Weserebung scenario with PO shipping, as I won the game by destroying all enemy units and waiting for recons to pop up. The thing is, he never used his sizeable British reinforcements at all. Ever.

My experience is that Elmer/PO is much less likely to use seaborne (and airborne) invasions in the latest patch.
Despite using all the editor tricks like setting the first objective on the coastal hex, using formation/unit ignore losses, moving the units to stage areas closes to the objective with no intervening obstacles (like I've done in Weser) etc,
Elmer just digs in his units.
Same thing with airborne units, in my Malta scenario Elmer will launch the first few formations then dig in the rest.
Another thing I've noticed in my Market Garden scenario is that Elmer will move lots of air units to the airfields in the bottom of the map despite that the air formations have only 1 objective at their original location.
(I also think something has changed with the general naval movement routines, I seem to remember that the previous patch used small zig-zags while the latest patch is back to the large zig-zags. Hope that makes sense.)
