erict -> Scenario MAX size limitation (11/28/2007 9:27:10 PM)

Hey guys,

I've been using the scenario editor to create a new scenario. Unfortunately when I try to play it I get a general protection fault error. The scenario has a lot of units so I'm thinking maybe there is a limit to how many are allowed. Is there a max # of units?

Under scenario anaylysis there's an option to estimate memory, is there a max for this before Harpoon won't load the scenario?

Estimate Memory

Estimated free memory required to run this scenario : 750K

Thanks!

There is no exact size limitation, 750k free memory required means quite the large scenario though.  I'd be interested in taking a look at the scenario if you zip it up and post it here or zip and send to HC3@harpgamer.com.

Ok here you go:

Basically all it is is the operations shield scenario in westpac. I changed the Japanese OOB to reflect their current setup and added South Korea Air Force OOB + 1 Virginia SSN. I would flesh out the NK forces but it's already crashing.

It crashes every time I try to load it.

TonyE -> RE: Scenario MAX size limitation (11/28/2007 11:43:20 PM)

Thanks, it is crashing because you have a group with no units in it. The SE doesn't explicitly prevent you from doing this. If you open the scenario in the SE and delete group CNR. I've added some code that will hopefully prevent such crashes in future releases of the game, until then (and even then), empty groups are not a good thing to have as a scenario designer.

I'll e-mail you a copy of the scenario with that group removed.

Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realize I had an empty group, lol[:D]

Was that group off the map by any chance? I can't find CNR. How did you find it?

TonyE -> RE: Scenario MAX size limitation (12/2/2007 6:06:17 PM)

I spent way too much time last night/this morning figuring out why a certain scenario wouldn't open in the scenario editor (SE).  At present one hard limitation is that the SE will usually not open a scenario that takes up more than 65536 bytes on disk.  This is a side effect of being a 16-bit program and how scenarios are loaded and created.  The most annoying thing about this limitation is that you can create a scenario larger than that in the scenario editor, you just cannot come back and edit it again later.

I'm hoping bretm gives me some miracle cure for this one but it appears any 'fix' would take a lot of code and debugging.

Jump trough the groups with space bar...

So then what is the scenario limitations then? Make a scenario larger than the 65k and it will but you cannot return and make additions in the SE?
What does 65 k get you? How many units approx on the map?

Thx

I can only tell you what youŽll get for 42kb.

A really nasty monster...

65k gets you a scenario that is probably unworkable from a player's point of view. Just too much happening at once to keep a sensible track of, and you'll likely be bombarded by staff reports.

As you can see from Rene's "Oil" scenario, at 42k you're still getting over 1,300 aircraft. Plenty for a 'monster' scenario that's still playable if you do a good job of setting it up.

Too bad no MP games to help you with this  :)

Thx

[:D] agreed

SteveF2006 -> RE: Scenario MAX size limitation (12/7/2007 6:44:10 PM)

Oh come on!  That's when Harpoon is the Best!!!! Many inbound aircraft & Missiles, Subs detected nearby, several surface group on intercept course, land units under attack..... just another day at the office! [:@]

For those of you that haven't played this, the WWIII scenario that is available at Harpgamer.com is one of the most intense multi-faceted games you'll ever play. [:'(] There are basically four separate large engagements happening simultaneously in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam. Plus there are a few minor conflicts too! It is one of those scenarios that you can't open with the SE because of it's size. You have to spend the first couple of minutes rapidly setting formations and aircraft load outs through out the entire area. Great fun, take ALL of your heart medication prior to playing this non-stop action scenario!! [&o]
