Valgua -> The usual question: A.I. (12/6/2007 12:02:50 PM)

Hi! It was a long time (well. months not years) has passed since I wrote on the matrix forums the last time. Work, chess tournaments and computer troubles have kept me away. I'm very interested in this title. I like the period a LOT. I have one doubt though, the usual doubt: how good is the A.I.? Don't answer that playing against humans is better. I know that, but I prefer to manage by myself the pace of the game and if I am in the mood of playing 20 turn during a sunday afternoon I want to be able to do so. At the end of the day I prefer the A.I., coupled with good discussions with other wargame fans, of course. So back to the main question: how good is the A.I.? I'd hate to bring war agains an incompetent enemy and I've really loved the A.I. in the AGEOD's titles. The answer on this question makes the whole difference between buying and saving money.

Sixty peole have read my post and no-one has a clue about the A.I.?? [X(]

Hi Valgua,

It's been out for less than a day, it's probably too early for folks to give AI opinions. I think the AI on Hard will give anyone some good practice, but if you're a veteran EIA player you'll probably want to move on to PBEM play once you get the hang of it.

Regards,

- Erik

Yes, you're probably right. I didn't notice that the games was so fresh. I'll wait a few days then. Thanks.

Hi Valgua,

I just bought the game yesterday, couldnīt help myself since I love the boardgame and play it often by mail. Since the game is not true to the original boardgame (allthough it's very similar), it's not of much use to me as a pbem game, I rather keep on with cyberboard, so I obviously bought it as a solo game hoping for a good AI...

So to answer your question, I've been playing it all morning with the hardest AI setting and I must say that it's been dissapointing up to now... for example, GB keeps on making stupid invasions that only leed to their doom and the Austrian and Prussian players barlely move their forces allthough they are at war with Russia (doesnīt make any since the DoW of Prussia to Russia) and with Turkey (this DoW agaisnt Austria does)... to top it off, the diplomacy you can undertake with the AI major powers is senseless, since for starts you never know their stance about you or other countries and a part from the allience, there is no other agreements you can reach with them.

I must say though that I thought that the game was going to be less like EiA so in this respect is ok (allthough not quite like the original), and hopefully they'll upgrade the AI in a future patch and add a bit more diplomacy with the major powers in solo games. Until then, the game is not really worth it's money for solo play.

My best

Thank you very much for your opinion.

Well to start with the AI does not chose the best options and will not perform as well in chosing battles as a human player so this game will really shine in PBEM BUT:

The AI keeps costs low and autoforages when possible, making you go to your enemy. Good because most losses I have seen in this game come from foraging and massive stack battles (which themselves either cost a lot in supply or have foraging losses).

The hardest AI setting is a bear, not strategically but because of the bonuses they get. They replace losses quickly (20% bonus to $$$ and manpower) and can be difficult to stay ahead of in VPs (they get a +1 bonus per econ AND +1 pp per econ or month I think).

Those bonuses help level out the fact that AI still considers the board a free for all. A Prussia/Austria permalliance would mitigate some of this and can be created by just going to war if either of them attacks a German or Italian minor (you can preset this).

I have managed to get my allies to do all sorts of stuff. Russia gave me $20 for 2pp. Spain attacked the British fleet in the channel. Prussia followed my armies into Vienna after I did all the work in subduing the Austrians (OK that was them taking advantage of me but still...).

The British typically annihalate the French fleet right off the bat and Brittania is safe from invasion for the rest of the game.

For solo play I think it is still worth the $$$ if you do the right set up. Make France and Britain at war with each other. Keep the winter movement ON. Put every AI opponent on Hard to give them the bonuses. Small nations will give you a challenge for the win off the VP growth and larger nations will be harder to take out. Force the Prussian/Austrian alliance if you chose to play as France. Go to war with France and/or Britain if you are Russia. Austria, Prussia, Turkey and Spain will be challenges without any help =) You may still win but it is not a guarantee and you will not walk all over your opponents.

Since you say you love the period and Ageod's AI: You are aware that they just released their newest title "Napoleon's Campaigns"?

Lord Wolsey -> RE: The usual question: A.I. (12/6/2007 8:20:51 PM)

I'd played the board game only once, and for only about 2 turns, so I played with the AIs set on easy.  As Austria I rolled through Italy and then attacked Southern France.  I lost my first battle, but France made a dismal mistake.  Instead of attacking my main force, or even doing nothing, it split up; with one corps racing south to attack Rome and the other towards Venice.  I was able to demolish both forces and ransack southern France, forcing surrender, without ever having an ally.  My PPs went through the roof.[sm=00000734.gif]

So, I'm ready to move up a level and I still don't have the game mechanics figured out yet.

Odysseus -> RE: The usual question: A.I. (12/6/2007 8:34:18 PM)

Can we here some comparisons here? How does the AI stand up compared to other titles out there. Me, I've played HoI2 and M2:TW so those would be 2 good points of reference as far as I'm concerned...And I'd call those AI adequate, if not thrilling...

bresh -> RE: The usual question: A.I. (12/7/2007 12:48:31 AM)

Yeah, the AI, seems bad, France fleet appearently wants to intercept all, "you have a setting intercept weaker force/ or intercept all".

Austria prussia russia fought each other the first couple years in my game, instead of France.
Turkey took egypt in early 1805 and didnt move a piece since.
I was UK, got almost to easy playing.
Even caught Napoleon walking along a coast with 1 corps, so send wellington with couple corps after him, and anhillaten the corps, taking Nap as prisoner in 07.
Seems the AI-settings only add cash+manpower and pps

BTW you cant remove napoleon from the game as a condition, if you get him prisoner.

Cheers
Bresh
