Book recommendations (Full Version)

It has dawned on me that I lack decent reference books on WW2 military aircraft. I have only one: The illustrated encyclopedia of combat aircraft of World War II (Hardcover)
by Bill Gunston. It's nice as a quick reference, but it leaves out a bunch of aircraft.

I do not want a book that focuses solely on a single aircraft model.

Recommendations?

There are a dozen out there, each has its supporters & detractors.

Authors include Bill Gunston, Francillon etc.

For US Army aircraft try Joe Baughers website.

Word War II Combat Aircraft by 3 Italian authors (Angelucci, Matricardi & Pinto).  It has some translation problems and typos, but still overall a solid book.

I have it. It's a good book but i'd say not for grognards. Too few datas to be a real "must-have". I'd need something that for ex. tells me all the official datas for every single a/c available from 1936 up to 1946. Every variant. Engines, armament, ceiling, everything.... the book you mentioned has some interesting comparison tables, but it doesn't go that deep

Gen Hoepner,

As it is written by Italians, does it cover Italian aircraft well.  Generally I find what is published of Italian planes to be very biased and not objective eg BR.20 (or just add plane of choice) to be poor because it is "easy meat for Allied fighters" but the same standard is not applied to say unescorted He-111H.  Any recommendations on books in print (in Italian or English) which do cover Italian planes objectively and do not merely repeat ad nauseum the same stereotype phrases?

I have the 2 above-mentioned books, but a nice addition is Aircraft of WWII by Stewart Wilson, which I acquired via Amazon as a large paperback.

Definitely not for grognards...but, I don't know of any single book out there that would satisfy a true grognard. Mostly you have to own a collection of books to get to that level.
