Has anyone else had an issue of skipping the land combat phase?

The situation is that France is at war with several minors. There are no land battles, but I am trying to besiege the capitals. Unfortunately, as soon as I finish with foraging, the game moves to the diplomatic phase (skipping land combat and not letting me siege the cities).

I first thought that I had accidentally used extra movement to help forage, but I went through it again assuring that I clicked "no" to using extra movement. Did not help.

Then I decided to build depots and depot supply each of the beseiging corps to ensure that I was not using extra movement--did not work.

Another consideration: I realize that you have to make a roll to allow the breach, this is NOT a case of failing the roll, I never even get to make the roll in the first place.

I have tried in other settings. As near as I can tell, as long as there is at least 1 land battle, there will be a land combat phase, but if there are no combats, the program does not recognize that the sieges need to be resolved, and the phase is skipped.

Has anyone else seen this, or can anyone think of something that I am not doing?

Alex

Alex,

Is it possible that your units are still in the rural area and not besieging? If you’re besieging a city, you should see a white box in the left corner of the corps counter and the text “Besieging Units (city)” in the top right corner of the Selected Area Info box. If you are in the rural area then during the land phase, use the “Move unit into or out of city” button to set up the siege assault attempt.

Yes, that turned out to be the problem. It is interesting in that as long as I got into the land combat phase, I could still take corps in the rural area to assault cities. So I am wondering if it would be an easy tweak to the code to ALWAYS have the player play out the land combat phase (even if the computer does not recognize that there are combats to be resolved) so that even if we forget to move the corps into the city area, there is still the possibility to besiege the city.

During your first go at it..or two those reminders are helpful but once you get into playing you appreciate the speed of bypassing a phase ...especially in PBEM.
