Are you required to leave the airgroups on these ships when upgrading to CVL? Do these ships have new airgroups when they return?

As far as I understand it.....no and yes in that order

That's correct. If you leave the floatplane groups on the ships, they are unloaded to the base when the CSs are put into the reinforcement queue.
