RealDarko -> Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/10/2007 1:57:24 PM)

Hello guys!

I really like the idea behind this game, love the Pacific War and his ships and fights, but this game is surpassing me, Is amazingly slow!! To play some turns you spend a whole hour doing nothing more than watching the Pc calculating his things! Is tehre no a way to accelerate this processes??
And can I somehow avoid all the micromanagement? Refuels, convoys, patrols...

Thank's

This game IS micromanagment.
Playing against the AI the only way to accelerate the AI processes is to press any key. But it takes some time anyway.

RealDarko...Greetings...Go to the "preferances" screen on the options panel,(also at the top of any map page, near the far left..You have the option of setting the amount of time the computer spends looking at different actions..I prefer to set my land battles as low as possible..The more of these screens you set at a low number, the quicker the game goes..I also turn off the detailed combat report screen entirely, (otherwise it comes on after every single little event of contact, which I don't need to see).
Speed also depends to some extent on the size of your HD and the speed it runs at, but most "speed" problems can be fixed with these things I mention.
Don't be so quick to throw in the towel, this is NOT a "combat shooter" type game and gratification in battle may take months of game play........[8D]

What time delay do you have set for messages?  Also do you have it set to display the results of every combat immediately after it happens?  Both of these will drastically slow down game play.  You can set the delay on the messages to 0.1 sconds and the combat displays to off.  You still get a combat report you can view during the next turn.

With those set that way, it takes about 10 minutes to run a turn on my IBM T-30 laptop, which is pretty old these days.  It runs much faster on my desktop machine.  Some of the early turns may take a while longer because the Japanese are extremely active.  The campaign I played all the way to the end had very fast turns at the end because the Japanese didn't do much.

If your computer is very old and slow or has limited RAM, it may be the machine.  The game uses a lot of computer memory and if there isn't enough, the game will have to thrash data back and forth with the hard drive for a while during turn processing.  I believe the game requires 300 MB, but I would say 512 MB is minimum for reasonable speed.  1 GB would give you a bigger margin.

And just out of curiousity, what machine are you running it on? What are its specs, especially RAM?

saj42 -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/10/2007 2:42:03 PM)

The amount of RAM in your PC is most important - you want at least 1Gb - preferebly 2Gb

For me atleast, turning off the music sped up things considerably, It was probably some bug due to my computer settings, but try it out nevertheless..

No, the NOSOUND/NOVIDEO trick is a general resource saver. But that's the way you have to do it; you can't turn it off inside the game.

RealDarko -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/10/2007 5:13:02 PM)

I have a modern Dual core with 1Gb of Ram, so I believe is not a problem with the computer. I will try to edit those values to get a faster gameplay.
Any more ideas?

Terminus -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/10/2007 5:14:07 PM)

Go into your WitP folder and rename the SOUND and VIDEO folders to NOSOUND and NOVIDEO, respectively. That worked for plenty of folks, including myself.

Definitely change the settings for turn execution! Experiment with turning combat animations off, detailed combat reports off, or cutting down the number of seconds of "delay." I think I run everything at 0.5 seconds delay or some such. I can watch a turn execute in about 10 minutes.

I have a Dual core, 4GB machine and it blows thru 2-day turns within a couple of minutes.

Now, I have most of my delays set at the lowest allowed (I think .1 seconds).

Good advice from all ...
I play on a machine, that is older than my ex's mental age ... A P3-500 180 Mb Ram, using XP, the slowest OS in the world, until Vista, and I still get these turns done with animations (no sound/vid) in 10-20mins depending on the level of PG rated violence.
What's more, I'm doing all the Java programming for my and Floyds WITPTracker on this platform, and anyone that knows Java, knows, what a slow compiler it is ...
Oh I wish for my computer back home (OZ -->Im in Sth Korea), could turn out 100+ PBEM turns a day, and complete the programming in a night! Make all of you happy with this beancounting util, and a boost in the arm before AE is released.

Visat takes some getting used to, but it did cause me to replace my old PC. The difference for playing WITP was shocking the first time I played. Though the screen does look funny on my wide-screen monitor. Well I will be waitng for WITP_2 to fix that "I hope".

Knavey -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/10/2007 8:07:47 PM)

Don't forget to use the 'Z' key to skip past some of the more boring parts of the replay turn.

Gem35 -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/11/2007 2:54:22 AM)

I have an Intel dual core conroe cpu @ 2.4 ghz and 2 GB RAM, it flies through the calculations pretty fast, especially after the first month or so of Game time.
Besides that, as the other folks have said, this game is all about micro-management and planning.

rockmedic109 -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/11/2007 11:34:50 AM)

Set the message and combat delays to 0.1 {I set naval surface combat to 0.2 and naval air 0.3}.  If you don't want to sit through a combat {and have combat display on} you can hit the esc key and it cancels further display.  You can also hit esc when you don't want to go through a detailed report.

2 Gigs of RAM and this game will fly.  My laptop is just shy of two years old and it will still run the game blazing fast.  One of the Moderators said that a good Video card will also help by speeding up the map scrolling {during turn resolution and orders}.

The first months turns will go slow till you have your units where or heading to where you want them.  After that, turns go quickly {though you are still playing a game that can potentially last four game years at one or two days at a time}.

Terminus -> RE: Need help or I will need to abandon the game (12/11/2007 11:39:50 AM)

If he's playing PBEM, he can't hit esc, since that almost certainly causes the synch bug. You must click the Done button.

I actually run WITP on a similar machine. However, I use Win98 as I think XP is just pushing the hardware too far.

As Terminus suggested, disabling the sound (by renaming the sound folder)is absolutely essential to get decent performance out of the game. I also noticed that the game got slower and slower with every turn played and required a restart to speed things up again. This seemed to go away after I renamed the sound folders. I have 360MB of RAM but all the increase in RAM from 128MB was allow the game to load without using buckets of virtual (disk) memory. Didn't really speed things noticeably.

And yes, 10-20 minutes is about all you are going to get!! [:(] As I know all too well....

Oh. Sorry. I only play AI right now so I never followed the sync threads. Good information if I choose the make the plunge though.

Thanks.
