hbrsvl -> Wanted-A strategy to win the war in '44! (12/12/2007 1:05:06 AM)

Hi-Playing v1.806, scen. 15, Allies, 12/31/'43. Objective: to win in 1944 a decisive victory-needs 3:1 ratio.

I hold everything up to & including Tori Shima & the Amamni Gp, Formosa, almost all of the Philippines, all New Guiena except Sarmi(not worth it) Timor , upto but not including Amboina. Brits haven't done much except to hold outside Akyab, Imphal & Kohima.

Allies presently have a 2.0599:1 ratio, 1723 ships sunk & 3:1 ratio in aircraft kills. Army loss is 9837 for Allies, 4671 for Japanese.

I don't want to go onto mainland China at Hong Kong and/or Shanghi-I can take & hold them, but have not enough force to do much else.

There are some good points in Burma, but not enough for 3:1.

Seems to me my only choice is to invade Japan. Haven't worked out where yet-I'd go for Tokyo, but think I'd get clobbered if I did so.

Anyone invaded Japan & held on? Thoughts, please.

Many thanks, Hugh Browne

an easy 20,000 points can be had by bombing Japanese HI

KDonnavan-OK, fine.Just how does one go about doing this if I don't have B-29s for several months?

I assume you mean bombing Japanese heavy industry. Please explain to me(or cite in the manual) how this can be done. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just don't understand the scoring mechanism to achieve the 20,000 points you mentioned.

Please, I need the A,B,Cs of how to do this.

Many thanks, HB.

Any plane can bomb industry, B-29s are just REALLY good at it[:D]. Your B-24s should do the job just fine.

Just select "City attack" as the mission then target the city and industry type from the menu that comes up. Don't bother attacking manpower. You can not start a big enough fire storm for it to be worth it.

By the way, 20,000 is a low number. 35-40,000 is more like it. [;)]

You forgot to mention a small, but important fact: AI, or PBEM? [;)]

VSWG-Sorry, playing against AI. HB

JeffroK -> RE: Wanted-A strategy to win the war in '44! (12/13/2007 7:14:59 AM)

hbrsvl

Invading against the jap AI should be easy except around Tokyo/Osaka.

I have gone via Hokkaido and found a Div & Support at best as defenders.

Dont know if its enough points but you can bring in 2E bombers and really bash the HI.

Is it not 4-1 vp for victory in 44 ?

I am aiming for an auto victory as Japs in 31/12/42 PBEM I thought that needed 3-1 ratio

someone please advise

VP ratio requirements DECREASE as time goes on... iirc, they drop to 1.75 eventually.

iirc, at the first of the year you get a message (if you have enough points for autovictory), and it asks if you want to continue.

KDonnovon- A further question re scoring VP by damaging HI. Are VPs awarded for damaging other targets in a city, such as ship yards, refineries, etc.?

If so, is scoring same as HI, i.e. 2 VP for each other type damaged?

Thanks, HB

correct, all home island industry including repair yards, engine factories, ect, will yield 2 VP's

In a game against the AI I went through the Northern Pacific and invaded Hokkaido and Sakhalin. Never invaded the Phillipines (I know that is breaking a huge promise but I didn't want to use up all of those transports when I needed them for invading Northern Japan). I took most of the islands to the south of Japan (Iwo Jima, etc) and bombed Japan from there. With the brits I was slowly retaking Burma and the Chinese I used as a meat grinder to wear down the Japanese. I won in the middle of 1944. Don't forget to use your subs....by the time the game was over I think the AI had about 20 transports left.

Q-Ball -> RE: Wanted-A strategy to win the war in '44! (2/12/2008 4:29:06 PM)

Try landing at Takamatsu; I bet anything it isn't defended much. It's on an island, so it's safe from counterattack. From there you can dive bomb half the home islands, or launch further invasions. Closing it out in early '44 should be no problem.

faraonej -> RE: Wanted-A strategy to win the war in '44! (2/19/2008 3:05:12 AM)

Playing my first (ever) game against the AI. It's lasted nearly a year. It's Feb 1 1944. I invaded Paramushiro from the Aleutians, then Ketoi. I then took a few RCTs and invaded Sakhalin Island. I cleaned that out and am pounding the northern island with B24's Venturas, and anything that'll carry bombs.

All of SE Asia is Allied (Burma, India, Indochina) Borneo, NG, Celebes & Java are allied as are the Marshalls, Gilberts, Carolines and Solomons. There are a ton of Jap ground units at Palembang in Sumatra giving me fits, but the Jap air units are toasted for the most part. Singapore will fall soon as the Japs are falling back slowly.

Next big campaign is Iwo, a year early.

pmath -> RE: Wanted-A strategy to win the war in '44! (2/19/2008 4:58:44 AM)

I found Nagasaki to be the best point of invasion. If you take Okinawa you can well support an invasion on Nagasaki and roll with armour/combined arms across Sasebo- Hiroshima. The beauty is you get the repatr shipyards so no longer a need to refit at Pearl once you have air superiority. I bypassed Tokyo and Dsaka as the AI massed the home defence in those two cities.
