garysorrell -> National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (12/14/2007 2:25:03 PM)

I would like to welcome anyone interested to follow along with the NCFL as we progress thru our first season.

We are, of course, a Max Football league, US rules, 10min qtrs.

Our start year is 1977. We have a rule similar to the CFL import rule, but probably more like that of Japanese Pro Baseball. In that while we use fictional players, our teams are allowed to carry 2 active NFL players from that season. Here are the results of our NFL free agent draft:

Salt Lake
1.)Wesley Walker WR
2.)Bob Avellini QB

New York
1.)Joe Namath QB
2.)Ed Podolak HB

New Mexico
1.)Larry Csonka FB
2.)Lester Hayes DB

Las Vegas
1.)Bob Kuechenberg OL
2.)Ted Hendricks LB

Detroit
1.)Bob Griese QB
2.)Fred Biletnikoff WR

Boston
1.)Dan Pastorini QB
2.)Lyle Alzado DL

Boise
1.)Dewey Selmon LB
2.)Louie Kelcher DL

Birmingham
1.)Chuck Muncie RB
2.)Billy Joe Dupree TE

Our league is 8 teams strong and will always be no more than 8.
Our season runs from mid January to early April, 10 weeks plus a title game, which we call:

The Title Game

Anyway, I will use this thread for season 01 updates. Welcome to all those interested

garysorrell -> RE: National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (1/9/2008 7:05:26 AM)

We are now heading into week 3, with games on Thursday and Friday.

Namath is struggling, Griese to Biletnikoff is looking good. Ed Podolak is running well and Chuck Muncie is unstoppable, as it appears his team is also. We have some good talent among the other players as well, including Bostons trio of talented running backs.

The site isnt much, but all are welcome to stop by.

The big question is, can we pull better TV ratings than Hawaii 5-0 and Rockford Files :-)

Marauders -> RE: National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (1/9/2008 9:17:01 AM)

Sorry man, Barnaby Jones rules.

It is great how that old curmudgeon can take on those young criminals in fist fights and win every time.

I would have thought the Csonka/Hayes combo to be good.  Power running on offense and the Stickum man on defense would be nice.

garysorrell -> RE: National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (1/9/2008 2:14:06 PM)

Agreed on Barnaby. Having Lee Merriwether around helped a lot im sure :-)

These were pre-steroids and Pre-Viagra times, so one has to be amazed that Jones could keep up with the other Joneses.

Maybe it was all of that money from that bubblin' crude - oil that is ... black gold ... Texas tea - that he had stashed away before changing his name and spending his life fighting crime just for the kicks or punches in this case.

Namath and Pastorini are done. Also another QB got a career ender.....QBs are endangered species in our league.

garysorrell -> RE: National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (2/17/2008 2:29:32 AM)

Week 8 is Complete

***Post Season Possibilities***
In the EAST
Birmingham has clinched a playoff spot, but could lose home field to Boston if they tie in win/loss, as the first tiebreaker is head to head and Boston beat the Bombers earlier this season.
Detroit could jump Boston and take the second spot, or in case of a tie, Detroit would win on H2H tiebreaker.

In the WEST
It's basically a fight between Las Vegas and New Mexico for home field. Only Boise can catch them, but lost to both teams, so they cant overtake either for a spot.
Our postseason will consist of Birmingham, New Mexico, Las Vegas, and either Detroit or Boston.

garysorrell -> RE: National Coaches Football League-Season 01 (2/25/2008 1:18:12 AM)

We are in week 10, our final week of the regular season.

The West division sends New Mexico and Las Vegas to the Postseason. The East sends Birmingham, and either Boston or Detroit.

garysorrell -> A stunner in Las Vegas (2/29/2008 2:27:08 PM)

With a playoff spot on the line, the Detroit Speed traveled to Las Vegas to face the Venom. This was a must win for Detroit as the Boston Battalion had won in an earlier game over New Mexico. If Detroit wins, they tie Boston and advance due to H2H tiebreaker. Lose, and Boston moves on.

It started out looking grim for the Speed, as they were in negative yardage for much of the first half, and Bonas and Stanek of Vegas were on a roll. However, down 7-0 in the third, Sanchious ran it in from 10 yds for Detroit to tie the game 7-7.

Bonas then hit Stanek for a 48yd TD pass and Vegas went up 14-7 late in the 4th. But On the ensuing kickoff, Detroit Return man Beheny returned the kick 83 yds for a TD, and the game went into OT.

Thats where the Speed got the ball and Griese hit Biletnikoff with a 60yd TD pass...game over.

I caught the TD, but didnt get the pass from Griese.

BigSmooth -> RE: A stunner in Las Vegas (2/29/2008 9:29:19 PM)

Congrats to Detroit. Boston will return next season to make a run again.

garysorrell -> RE: The Title Game - 1977 (3/11/2008 12:10:38 PM)

The 1st NCFL Championship game is set. The Las Vegas Venom will travel to Birmingham Alabama and face the Birmingham Bombers.
The game will be played this weekend.

garysorrell -> Las Vegas 1977 NCFL Champs (3/15/2008 2:24:09 PM)

In the inaugural NCFL Championship, the underdog Las
Vegas Venom, led by a Newly signed free agent
quarterback, defeated the heavily favored Birmingham
Bombers 73-12.

Las Vegas jumped out to a 17-0 lead after 1 quarter.
Jay Zavodny, the free agent QB signed at the last
minute to replace injured starter Moses Bonas, seemed
to find every wideout he looked for. They were open
often, and Zavodny hit several big plays down the
middle. HB Benton Stanek did as he has all season, and
ran the ball with power.

Birmingham, on the other hand, fell victim to their
own mistakes. Several penalties, and 2 fumbles
returned for touchdowns, put the Bombers too far back
for even their dangerous offense to mount a comeback.
MegaBack Chuck Muncie was held under 100yds, and
rarely got past the line of scrimmage as Venom
defenders were usually on him immediately.

Las Vegas did lose a starting DB and LB early in the
game, but their backups stepped in a played well
enough.

Yngvai -> RE: Las Vegas 1977 NCFL Champs (3/15/2008 9:39:59 PM)

Congrats to Birmingham for an outstanding season. I think Vegas, as the underdog, didn't like the thought of people in their own city betting against them :) Also, the 50 point beating that Birmingham gave to us in the middle of the season gave my players the motivation to work hard in prep for this game.

Man, talk about injuries to my team this season! Two QB's, DB's, LB's...

Looking forward to version 2.2 to be out soon. Should really enhance game play

Scott_WAR -> RE: Las Vegas 1977 NCFL Champs (3/16/2008 7:17:26 AM)

Congrats for a great turnaround in the season and winning it all when it counted to Las Vegas. I knew I had been getting too lucky, especially after the last second TD for the win in the MLF. I look forward to next season, then new update is going to really help make playbooks better.
As for injuries, I think Birmingham went though a good half dozen DB's this season.

garysorrell -> Colts and NFL prepare for new upstarts (3/22/2008 8:03:18 PM)

After accepting an invitation from the NCFL to play an exhibition game against the league champs, the NFL announced the Baltimore Colts, led by QB Bert Jones and HB Lydell Mitchell will be preparing for the summer '77 game.

The game will be held in Baltimore.
