ok, this should not be happening.

playing France, i win a naval battle in the channel against Britain. i cannot follow the British fleet and blockade it, but remain in the channel.

on the British turn, the ai moves one fleet to the channel. it does not attack my stack, but it's presence stops me from crossing.

i am not sure if this is intentional due to a rules change, but this situation is just wrong.

This looks to be a nromal situation since we are not allowing naval pursuits in EiANW.

Just make sure you set intercepts ON for that channel fleet so you have shot at hitting the Brits the next time they do that.

Marshall, was it an engine design limitation or a decision just not to use pursuits?

It was actually a desgin decision that we might be able to eliminate but essentially it was due to the fact that there is really no way to effectively prompt the winner (phasing OR non-phasing player) to pursue or not. About the only way we could do this would be to add another order parameter for after battle orders which we do not have in the game engine DB.

Better put that into the list of things on the wish list. This is a very important change.

However, Thresh, there IS a way around it, provided you haven't used up all your movement AND it was your attack coming out of a blockaded port. If both of those are true, then you can simply continue movement with the stack, and MOVE to the blockade box. However, if it was an attack that used up your movement (which would NOT be from a blockade box), then the game is not matching the boardgame, and you are stuck.

Marshall, the reason I say this is important is that it takes away a very important practice from GB: If an enemy attempts to assault her, she may need to go back to its port to keep it from pulling the same trick again next turn. Now, I grant that in most cases, GB can simply use normal movement to follow the ship. However, there are two things that go against this:

1) GB may be out of movement points. This would force her to use her last-then-first option, possibly prematurely (to blockade the following turn).
2) The defeated fleet could, if it chose to, intercept again (unless the game turns this off by some mechanism). Now, I grant that most of the time, this would be stupid. After all, that same fleet just defeated it. But, the commander may feel the Brits got lucky, and be willing to try again.

well, that in a nutshell bites...almost as much as having a broken shift key...

thats a fundamental game change...it's not that i don't mind britain moving to the same seazopne, but occupying it without having to fight the stack already there is counterintuitive to the rest of the game imo.

Actually no. Under the board game rules, if i remember correctly, if a stack move into an area and doesnt declare a combat it has to be intercepted. Unlike land movement combat isnt automatic and you CAN end up with many stacks in an sea area. Plus defenders were also able to make evasion rolls. Yes it bites a but it makes a bit of snse - you have two fleets in the channel one hunting the other, which is hunting transports and avoiding battle.

What Nappy says here seems to be what the rules state in the PDF for EiANW as well. It says (I am paraphrasing) if a phasing fleet moves into or through an area containing enemy ships they can attempt intercept. If you did not give your ships standing orders to intercept or if it failed to intercept you could end up with both fleets in the same square. On you next naval phase you should be able to just attack them though.

Had you blockaded them you would have auto-intercepted.
