n01487477 -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 2:40:01 PM)

Thanks Michael,

John seems to be doing a pretty good job so far...

Some initial points:-
  • Armament needs to be increased a tad.
    Production -> 21K + 14K = 35K
    Out -> 34K + 18K = 52K

    So I'd increase to about 350 / day
  • He could turn off Veh assembly altogether if desired, until more is required, but then again I can only see 90 Days...
  • Merchant Shipping is getting very late, I agree with John here he needs to turn on some Merchant ship building (which I see he has done)and then prioritise what is needed.
  • Naval is doing what John intends and when CV Katsuragi goes down the slips, he can decide what else he needs.
  • He could turn off 167 Nakajima Engines ... for a while if he wishes. Or does he want money in the bank ?
  • Why is he repairing 110 HI ? We don't have enough Oil for the HI we currently have (2447*6=14682 HI)??
  • Similarly stop repairing the Res Cntrs.
    Res 20166 * 1.25 = 25207 - (Manpower 788 * 10 = 7880) = 17300 HI Capacity.

  • HI usage currently looks around 11K, with a surplus of about 3K a day, Increasing the Arm will pull another 1200 HI (6*(350-157)) ... Oil is still the priority.

    How do the regions look for Oil and Resources ?

    If I've made mistakes I apologise but I just put in a hell of a day! If I have further thoughts I'll post..

  • John 3rd -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 2:49:32 PM)

    Considering since Michael last looked at all this stuff that I lost Northern Japan and have then retaken it, I think the situation is pretty good.

    Michael--If you get the chance can you show ships repairing in the Harbors?  If you can it will show just how bad off the Fleet is after all that fighting.

    Michael--Is there any place with large amount of resources and/or oil that I have missed?  I THINK I've been collecting it all but one never knows...

    There is a convoy carrying 30,000 supply heading to Balikpapan.  Should be there within a week or so.

    I'll raise armaments some but intend to keep engines going so I can stockpile them.

    When Katsuragi comes down the ways, I will shift all her buuilding points into DDs and try to get back to stockpiling some points.

    Anyone else see anything significant?  Comments?  This is a much a Japanese Economic AAR as anything else.

    n01487477 -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 2:57:48 PM)

    John,
    I agree your economy is much better than I expected after the last month ...but please don't waste those supplies repairing things your won't use & don't need (RES & HI).

    Lastly if Michael had two consecutive turns he could see if there are any outstanding economic alerts ...

    How do the regions look John for Oil / Res ?

    ny59giants -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 3:51:27 PM)

    John,
    Here is the screen shot of damaged warships. There are another 10 not listed with only a couple heavily damaged DDs.

    Resources - Look at the screen shot I posted (I sorted by Resources). Bangkok has a significant amount and I would say to load at Saigon and allow the AI to pull them down for ya. It may mean you need to micro-manage each turn (tell the AI to load Resources). Another Resource rich base is Kendari.

    Mistmatz -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 4:04:34 PM)

    I have a Question probably more related to the tracker not the game.

    How comes BB Ise (among other vessels) has a speed of 0 albeit SysDmg is 20, alas not quite crippled? Is the speed column showing the current speed of a TF rather than the maximum speed the vessel could do in current condition?

    n01487477 -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 4:37:13 PM)

    It should show the speed of the ship ... which even in port disbanded shows the speed as positive in game. So this is either a read error or something else going on...

    I have the same anomalies, and will look closer into the problem and get back about it. Thanks for pointing out this.

    Cheers
    Damian

    PS Below is an example of the same turn, showing Tracker and WITP ...[sigh] back to the drawing boards!

    saj42 -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 4:55:26 PM)

    As Sumatra is starting to unravel, I'd suggest not repairing any more oil centres at Palembang and concentrate on Balikpapan.
    Getting TKs into Palembang and out again with oil will become more hazardous[:(]

    n01487477 -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 5:02:12 PM)

    Tallyho makes a good point, there must come a time to cut your losses and be wary of sinking too much supply into a sinking base ... but there is still 122K of Oil sitting at Palembang, get it out if possible.
    Michael, I only asked about the regional stuff because I saw Bangkok had very little Oil... Isn't there some HI there ? Or are we concentrating just on pulling it back to Japan ?

    John 3rd -> RE: January 1944 Production and VP (9/4/2008 7:41:27 PM)

    GREAT points!  I am loading oil at Palembang and getting it out as fast as possible.  I've got an Aviation regiment and Air HQ about to unload there so I can move fighters into the base to fight the inevitable attacks to come.

    I'm working on moving two Divisions to Bankha to try and hold the area.  Life looks very grim there but we'll see how long I can hold.  I just got a BUNCH of IJN Bombers at the Home Islands over the last 10 days (nearly 200 bombers) and they have moved to Singapore to train while bombing his three Chinese Divisions at Medan.  I NEED to eliminate those troops there ASAP.

    Keep the information coming and I will send another turn to Michael in a bit.

    John 3rd -> Malaya--Sumatra (9/4/2008 11:13:29 PM)

    January 20, 1944 shows this situation in Malaya/Sumatra:

    [image]local://upfiles/18041/2FC427296A1A427DBD29FD5B4B986052.jpg[/image]

    John 3rd -> Malaya--Sumatra (9/7/2008 4:36:34 PM)

    Sorry for a few days passing without an update.  Dan and I have been doing a turn a day but I am heading out for 48 hours of R&R Marital Therapy with my wife so I won't get anything added until Tuesday.

    To bring things into game focus:
    1.  Kaula fell with Dan's first attack on January 22nd (now the 25th).
    2.  I am trying to finish off the Chinese troops in Medan.

    The fate of the Empre now sits in Sumatra.  I CANNOT afford to lose Palembang and other Oil/Resource Centers.  Sakhalin is a threat but I MUST stop the attack in the DEI.  Decisions made:

    1.  ALL 12 Japanese CV/CVL are now moving there for a massive attack upon Allied shipping and warships.
    2.  ALL decent Fighter Daitai/Sentai are moving into Theatre.  I've already got 400 bombers there.
    3.  Troops are shuttling over to Bankha as fast as I can move them

    These are the current moves.

    John 3rd -> The Fall of Sumatra (9/9/2008 11:06:36 PM)

    The Allies continue to drive the Japanese back towards Medan and eject 20,000 Japanese troops into hex 20,44. These troops SHOULD have withdrawn to Medan but--of course--choose not to.

    I hate the land cmbat system! One cannot say...well the Chinese have 3 Inf Divisions there blocking the Japanese troops. CRAP. I've had 5 units withdraw to Medan before this attack occurred.

    Without those 20,000 troops, Medan will fall and Bankha is as good as lost. I begin to think that I need to withdraw my troops instead of add troops to this lost cause. There are nearly 100,000 engaged troops there presently and I could move them all to Malaya and hold there.

    Anyone got thoughts???

    John 3rd -> Other news... (9/9/2008 11:17:26 PM)

    On other fronts, mid-to-late January brings few surprises for the Japanese.  Major events include the following:

    1.  Allied SS keep sinking at a steady rate.  Since January 18th I have sunk the HMS Tactician, SS Devilfish, SS Sculpin, and SS Ling.  Another 6-8 have been hit by LBA and/or ASW.  My good ASW vessels are now being produced in number.  Placing 6 of these together gives me an ASW factor in excess of 50.  I have 3 of these ASW TF operating with another forming...

    2.  There are now over 600 Japanese Fighters training in China.

    3.  Australia sees the Japanese withdrawl make it to Alice Springs.  I have nearly 1,000 AS there now with two Inf Div holding the base.  There is no sign of the Aussies coming up the road.  A tank regiment holds 4 hexes from Alice Springs.  Perhaps Dan is driving towards Perh first.  That would be OK with me...

    The Aussies are beginning a drive from the east where they destroyed 3 small infantry units that refused to retreat day-after-day towards Katherine.

    4.  A small landing takes back Rarotonga.  This base had been evacuated and now I sset-up a small trap.  If Dan comes at the Society Islands without Carrier protection then they will get nailed by 54 Betty 2/Frances.  We'll see if Dan makes that move...

    5.  The remaining major carriers of the Kido Butai are about 50% of the way to Palembang. These 4 CV and 4 CVL will be used in a mass atack that I hope might blunt the Allied assault for a time.

    6. I have a CV (Katsuragi) that will be completed within days.  After that CV slips down the ways, then I will accelerate another 5-7 DDs.

    ny59giants -> RE: Other news... (9/10/2008 12:21:17 AM)

    Your best bet is to use the Japanese patrol planes to pull back your trapped troops to Malaya (transports will not work). They will probably not make it back to Medan before it falls if you tried to march them.

    You will not get troops to retreat from a hex which both have control over to another hex with both side present (WitP ground combat 101). AE will have hexside control issues vs just hexes, so hopefully you will not have this happen again.

    John 3rd -> RE: Other news... (9/10/2008 2:06:49 AM)

    Mike--Do you mean my Mavis/Emily for evacuation purposes?

    I just created about 60 barges to help pull those troops out.  I've already got 20 at Singapore and I created more at Saigon, Bangkok, Cam Rahn Bay, and Hong Kong.  It'll take a while to get everything there but I should be able to do it.

    There are 20 AP at Bankha right now and I will order them to load the troops they just unloaded and head for Malacca for a quick turn around.  We'll have to see what happens in this area.  The only good news is that Bankha is a dead-end in Sumatra ground-wise.  Dan will still have to stage another invasion to threaten Malaya so that is good.

    Palembang will be threatened.  I will move about 100 Fighters (36 already present) there to help defend the base while I move oil out.

    Cannot wait for AE's revamped ground combat!

    ny59giants -> RE: Other news... (9/10/2008 4:18:05 AM)

    quote:

    Do you mean my Mavis/Emily for evacuation purposes?

    YES!! Set them to Transport troops to that hex, then change them to Pick Up troops. Select what you want to evac. Those patrol planes with the greatest load capacity are best. As long as your troops are in a coastal hex, this should work.

    File away this fact for later use. I do this often with Allied patrol planes early in the war. Coronado's are the best for the Allies.

    John 3rd -> RE: Other news... (9/11/2008 12:02:55 AM)

    Dan and I had a banner day.  We got three turns in today and that is the best we have done in weeks.  I will post an update in a while but I have to send the third turn to him!

    John 3rd -> February 1944 Production and VP (9/12/2008 7:48:35 PM)

    February 1, 1944
    Victory Points and Economic Summary

    Victory Points:

    Score
    Japan 49,957 (Up 1,316 Points)
    Allies 35,252 (Up 3,332 Points)

    The Japanese continue to pick-up lost territory in the Northern Pacific with the recapture of Kunashiri. As the Japanese work to find and exploit opportunities, the Allies begin a small campaign to recapture un-garrisioned islands in the Pacific. The major action for the month occurred in Sumatra where the Allies take back the entire eastern portion of the Island from Sabang to Bankha.

    While the action is grim, there is real give and take. I continue to hammer the Allied SS. This is not a one-way fight at the moment and I intend to keep it that way.

    Ships Sunk
    Japan 656—6,932 VP (up 510)—I lost 81 ships sunk during January. The losses shifted from Warships back over to AP/AK. These were my losses: 16 AK, 27 AP, MSW 11, ML 8, AO 1, MLE 2, AR 1, AS 1, CL Tatsuta, DD 4, and SS I-15.

    Major Japanese Vessels Sunk to Date---CV Junyo, Hiyo, and Hiryu, BB Fuso, Yamashiro, Mutsu, Nagato, and Musashi, BC Kirishima and Haruna, 5 CA , 12 CL, 89 DD, and 36 SS.

    Allies 1,103---12,697 VP (up 426)---Dan lost 51 ships for the month of January. Exact Losses are: LCT 10, AK 21, LCM 1, LST 1, TK 3, MSW 2, PT 6, SC 2, DE 2, CA Dorsetshire and Houston, 1 DD, and SS 9.

    John 3rd -> Combat Report: February 1, 1944 (9/12/2008 9:54:57 PM)

    Combat Report
    Mid-January to February 3, 1944

    The Japanese Empire continues to struggle on for the last 2-3 weeks ranging into early-February.  While the Allies have an overwelming advantage in strength at their two offensive sites (North Pacific and Sumatra), the Japanese are still hitting wherever possible and sinking Allied ships.

    When that HUGE American force arrived off Northern Japan six weeks ago I was sure that the war was over.  While those troops and, more importantly, their 4EB are a nuisance the bottom has yet to fall out of the Empire.  In fact the American carrier force is now decisively tied down to providing CAP over Sakhalin.  The recognition of this fact has been slow for me to grasp.

    I KNOW Dan won't move his CVs out unless he has another major operation running elsewhere.  The moment those CVs depart, I will attack the AF and knock them back to the Stone Age.  If needed, I can throw 500 Fighters and nearly 1,000 bombers at TWO American bases.  This realistic appraisal has led to major Imperial decisions...

    North Pacific
    The American 4EB have driven my planes from the Central Aleutians out to Attu.  There are still nearly 400 planes at either Paramushiro Jima or Attu.  They attack any American shipping going to or from the bases in Sakhalin.

    Kunashiri in the Kuriles has been retaken by Japan.  The Americans make no effort to save the troops stationed there and 4,000 surrender on January 30th.

    Hakkaido has been completely liberated with another 15,000 Americans surrendering in mid-January.

    Onnekotan is the next Japanese target of opportunity.  A fully prepped Infantry Brigade is about to depart and hit the American troops left there by their High Command.

    WHY am I doing these attacks?  I think it is upsetting Dan.  Instead of rolling over and playing dead, I am attacking these small islands and their garrisions.  If he pulls his CVs away then Sakhalin is vulnerable and if he doesn't I grab these islands and gain the VP from the surrenders.  In a very twisted way it is a win-win for the Japanese right now.  I don't expect it to last but right now it is rather entertaining to contempate...

    South and SE Pacific
    I believe the Allies thought that everything has been pulled from the Outer Perimeter.  The Americans have staged small landings at several Japanese Islands.  Half of these attacks have failed and resulted in losses to the Allies.  At Koumac a small invasion was driven back and several American ships were sunk.  Landings have been made at Wallis, Rarotonga, and Ha'apai.  Wallis is already back in Japanese hands and the other two will fall within a week to ten days.

    Throughout this area of the Pacific I only have 3 Daitai of Japanese Torpedo Bombers (2 Frances and 1 Betty-2), 1 Sentai of Tonys, 2 Chutai of TB, and 2 Chutai of DB.  Add about 80 Recon planes and this is all I have to strike back at the Allies.  Dan doesn't know this and must be slapping himself on the head wondering where these planes come from!

    Hoping to do even better, I have concentrated the remaining 4 CVE (4 CVE, 1 CA, 2 CL, 8 DD) of the Japanese Navy and sent them to Rabaul.  Once they make it there, thye will be sent hunting.  While only having a little over 110 planes this TF is enough to stop the little invasion and force Dan to divert bigger resources from the main theatres of action.

    Inner Perimeter
    The Marianas--Palau--Philippines--Formosa--Okinawa are being strengthened at the moment.  I pulled 3 complete Japanese Infantry Divisions from Hokkaido the last week of January.  Those troops are going to Naha, Takao, and the northern port on Formosa.  I've almost got enough Political Points to buy out a Chinese Infantry Division and it will be sent to my weakest link in the defences.

    Wake and Marcus are well supplied and tough.  If Dan wants to widen his salient into my territory then these two islands will cost him dearly.

    Australia
    The Allies finally get the Japanese to move out of Broken Hill, Adelaide, and Whyalla.  Alice Springs isn't too long to stay in the Japanese camp.  I will make a stand at Tennant Creek and see how long I can hold the Allies back from the eastern DEI by fighting here.

    Am still pulling 50,000 resources every two weeks from Perth.

    Sumatra--Malaya
    HUGE battle here over the last 3 weeks.  Dan has taken every Japanese town running along the Padang--Bankha axis.  Initially I threw a huge amount of troops into this area until I realized it is a dead-end for the Allies.  As I held in Medan, I started withdrawing soldiers from Bankha as fast as possible.  During the course of a week, I pull over 100,000 troops out of this area.  They are transfered to the Malay Coast to rebuild and reprovision.  Bankha fell on February 3rd and there are only 7,000 troops that I didn't have pulled out.

    I have two groups of troops stranded right now.  Those 7,000 mentioned above will be pulled off by AK/AP in the next few days.  The other group is the 20,000 stranded east of Kuala.  I've now got 20 barges moving back-and-forth between Kuala and Georgetown with another 40 on the way to help.  Given about 2 weeks of time I will have this group of troops pulled as well.

    The Japanese Air Force was unleashed twice during this period and did well.  The Torpedo Planes manage to sink CA's Dorsetshire and Houston as well as a DD.  BC Repulse and 5 other DDs are torpedoed as well.  I didn't lose too many planes in these strikes and they certainly help the cause.

    Currently the British Eastern Fleet is cruising along the west coast of Sumatra.  They launched a terrible strike against Japanese ships in Bankha on the 2nd and sank 5 ships as well as damaged 5 more.  I believe that there are 2 CV, 1 CVL, and 3 CVE in this force.  It APPEARS that there is nothing I can do about it...

    Kido Butai
    The British Fleet has no idea that 2/3 of the remaining Japanese CV Fleet is at Soerabaja right now.  Having arrived on the 1st, fueled on the 2nd, the Kido Butai will head for Batavia now.  The remaining 1/3 of the Kido Butai is slipping south to the far west of the British to link-up.  IF I can get these two groups together then the Japanese will have 6 CV and 6 CVL (600+ planes) poised to potentially SMASH the British Fleet!

    I need to take pressure off of Sumatra right now.  IF I can cripple the the British Fleet then Dan CANNOT do anymore end-arounds.  IF he cannot do that then the pressure will fall off.  It is true that Palembang and Singapore will be vulnerable but I sould still HAVE them!

    That is the current situation...

    The CVs can't stay there forever. Sys damage will eventually cause them to find an anchorage somewhere. It may take a couple of months though. If you can find a way to degrade his SLOC, you can turn this to your advantage.

    How many AKs and LSTs has your opponent lost now? I seem to recall Andy Mac commenting in his game against PzB that he had lost so many AKs that it was beginning to affect his offensive operations and I know that losing a lot of LSTs also hurts. I would think that Allied losses of these ships in this game must be approaching the threshold of pain.

    Thanks for the comments gentlemen!  CF--Nice to have you in the AAR Sir.  I am a great admirer of yours!

    In the last six months, Dan has lost over 400 AK.  That is a pretty solid number.  He lost almost 300 in the assault on Northern Japan as well as about 50 taking Iwo Jima and moving into Sumatra.  I would imagine that he lost another 100 or so the first year or so of the war.  Is that a lot for the Allies?  I have no idea whatsoever...

    John 3rd -> RE: February 1944 Production and VP (9/13/2008 3:57:40 AM)

    Mike--His CVs are disbanded in that Northern Sakhalin port city.  They sit there with nearly 300 other ships (this from repeated recon) and provide an umbrella of Hellcats over that town and Toyohara...
