From the Joint Briefing of the Army and Navy Staff at Yokohama Military Base Honshu: Dec 9th 1941 0830 Gentlemen if you would be seated there is a great deal to get through and only so many hours in the day. Little over a day ago the forces of Imperial Japan launched the most expansive operation in history. The area of the operation in border on the Malaya Peninsula in the west, all the way to the Hawaiian Islands in the east. There is a great deal that, has unfolded since that time. Kota Bharu was invaded by the 56th and 18th Divisions. While the bulk of the 25th Army landed at Singora in Thailand. Resistance to our landings has been moderate, it is believed that only a Brigade is holding the line. Landings at Legaspi in the Philipines were interrupted bu the Heavy Cruiser Houston, she was beaten off by the Mizuho and the landing fleet. Mizuho sustained moderate damage as did Houston. Anti-submarine operations off Kota Bharu damaged and drove off a British or Dutch submarine. Note their Captain was willing to bring his boat into shallow water to effect a strike. After a heavy bombardment by four of our heavy cruisers and three of our light, a Special Naval Landing Force was able to capture the island of Wake. Our submarines however were able to damage the enemy. I-155 put a torpedo into a British Minelayer, I-154 did the same to the Tanker Augustina. Port strikes where made at both Hong Kong and Manila with light damage to facilities and numerous ships damaged. No confirmed sinks are reported at this time. Carrier Divisions 3 and 4 sailed down into the strait between Borneo and the Celebes. She attacked shipping at Balikpapan. She will continue on in a hunt for the BB PoW. Paratroop operations were carried out against the port of Sorong in Northwestern New Guinea, and the village of Gasmata on New Britain. Both operations were a success with the added bonus of the sinking of a Floatplane tender with all her aircraft. In the first two days of the war it is estimated that some 400 aircraft of all types have been destroyed on the ground and a further 100 in the air from all actions. We have lost 4 aircraft in air to air combat since the outbreak of hostilities. Our flak loses are barely 100. That concludes our briefing for today.
