T_K -> How does the AI work? (1/1/2008 7:28:12 PM)

In particular, how does it select what units to produce and how to mix its formations? I need to know that in detail - I realise it uses "AI score" but what other units values does it take into consideration? Does it care about mobility, for instance - that is, wheeled vs tracked? I plan to restrict wheeled vehicles to roads, will it know what to do? Also would it make a difference between flak for low-flying aircraft and flak for bombers? Would it know what to do with self-propelled arty? Would it make a difference between light armour for exploitation / deep penetration and heavy armour for frontline breakthrough (just examples of use)? Would it know the difference between standard line infantry and mountain infantry - that is if it needs to operate in a lot of mountaneous terrain, would it know that it's better to make infantry that moves better in such terrain than make normal infantry?

Also there's no AI score for scouts, so the AI just never makes them, I realise it won't make recon planes as well unless I lie to it and give them fighter score of 10 or something.

I'm getting interesting results with my units and I'd like to know what to do to get the AI to make some smarter choices. For example, right now it's building mostly smg infantry (I call them stormtroops but they're so far pretty much the same as default smg except 120 hp) instead of rifle. You can see formations with 10 smg and one rifle which is just puzzling. Also it's not making any tanks but only armoured cars and mixing the two types of armoured cars I've given it. Also it's still making some staff-only formations (which aren't HQs) like before. I went through the AI log and it does buy research for better and better medium tanks but it never actually makes them.

I did another test and now that it has cavalry (standard infantry with movement type horse) it builds exclusively cavalry and armoured cars. Also of course hq and staff and some engineers and aircraft but so far nothing else. Now it was kinda cornered in a completely wooded part of the map so maybe that has something to do with its decisions.

I just noticed something weird - for the transport aircraft by default all ! AI scores are set to 0, including air cap and transporter. Does that mean the AI can't use transports at all?

Also, why does early infantry have AI score 100 for infantry and 1 for infantry support and 1 for armour?

Well I do think this is really important info for those wishing to create their own units usable by the AI.
