WTF?

Thought this was a good place for an FYI.

Hmmm - messing with USN ships.... bad mojo for Achmed's bathtub boys...

desert -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/7/2008 10:58:14 PM)

I saw that on MSN earlier.

"You are going to blow up within minutes", lol. Definitely something to say to "unrecognized" ships.

Trick37_MatrixForum -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/8/2008 1:40:43 AM)

Saw an article that stated the Iranians "finally realized" that the ships they were saying that to were American ships, and that's when they turned and ran like a bunch of girlie men!  Oh yea, and that was just about when one of our ships was going to open fire....a two-second spray from one of the gatling guns on the ships would end that threat.

Dr. Foo -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/8/2008 4:16:59 AM)

The Iranians have been doing this forever. I was in the gulf in 1987 as part of a Marine detachment set up on Mobile Sea Base Hercules. They would make a run and just as they were about to enter the engagement zone they would turn and run. That was until we handed them their a$$ during Operation Praying Mantis!

Naval combat doesnt work too well in TOAW3. Try Harpoon for a better sim of this.

I'm not sure you'd need much software. Maybe simulate it with a pot of boiling water and an anthill.

Levelworm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/8/2008 9:46:59 PM)

USA cannot afford to fight another war while Iraq is not stablized, Iran knows that and it's just trying to push the line.

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/9/2008 4:21:09 AM)

Let's face it. TOAW3 and naval combat doesn't mix well.

I am not saying a naval combat scenario would be very interesting but
Iranians do have those super fast torpedoes which could cause some damage.

Would be interesting to see how they behave in Harpoon in fact.

Their only strength would be terrain and fighting on their own turf not much else. However, those
seem to have been enough for USSR once.

Are there any hypothetical scenarios about this for TOAW3? I have only seen the Iraq.Iran war so far.

Well, picture the situation IN Iraq only with three times as many people, without the internal divisions and in the mountains instead of in the desert, and with no international support this time.

That's Iran. Knocking off their army won't be a problem, but destroying the army isn't enough any more. One of the reasons why it won't happen.

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/9/2008 11:05:09 AM)

On the other hand they have the two front benefit. Remember that Afghanistan succeeded in invading Iran once.

That's really pretty irrelevant: invading is easy. Occupying is hard.

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/9/2008 11:11:26 AM)

Obviously but unlike iraq there's no clan system in place (except among Kurds). If you remove
the Mullahs there's plenty of options for alternate governments.

Al Quaida doesn't really have any infra structure they can use either.

But in TOAW3 that is outside context. Only reason to discuss this here would be within the context of a scenario.
Does any exist to begin with?

The Iranian people are reasonable- at the moment. If you are in occupation of their country I can guarantee you that this will change.

No, and they never will. Al Qaeda is a Sunni movement, Iran is a Shi'ite country. However, people are perfectly capable of causing trouble without Al Qaeda (not that the term really means anything any more anyway)

Anyway, this is definitely current affairs. Where's JAMiAM with his padlock?

Absolutely! The Iranian people (most) actually like the US and want friendly relations with the US, but park and M1-A2 Abrams in town square and you will find those same reasonable people will quickly become an insurgent army.

..no current affairs..

..there's other boards and other sites for that..

..be good, and you ask James to lock it up, we all make errors..

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/10/2008 10:29:29 AM)

We can save this thread by talking scenario options though.

I would like to see a hypothetical scenario regarding this.

In all honesty, I did not know that. Sorry, guys.

That said, I, too would like to see a scenario on this.

Don't apologise. I'm quite happy to discuss current affairs here even if Matrix would prefer that I didn't.

I agree, we need an off topic area in TOAW III.

..s'ok, [8D]

..there are good reasons, here in particular. Many of us know each other from way back, sorry to the new guys, and we all have a pretty good idea of the relative battle lines from previous sites, and the bad blood that can, and will, result from mmmm "contentious threads on modern matters"..

..so we keep the site easy for all, and avoid current affairs..

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/10/2008 2:04:07 PM)

However. A thorough study on a hypothetical military conflict between US/NATO and Iran would
be interesting. Maybe even add a potential Russian intervention to spice things up?

Closest I have got so far, is Trey Marshals fantastic GDW conversion but it has nothing to do with
current affairs.

a white rabbit -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/10/2008 2:45:07 PM)

..oh yes, fascinating..

..i'd not assume NATO involvement tho, a chance is all, but i would factor in added Muslim intervention..

..and the Russians ? for me an unknown quantity. How much Iranian oil are they taking ?

marcusm -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/10/2008 3:25:00 PM)

I think China and India are more interested in the gas/oil pipes than Russia.
Russia is probably more interested in selling technology and weapons. Maybe China too.

I doubt China would intervene in anything though. They are just in it for the money/resources.

cesteman -> RE: Iranians "harrass" U.S. Navy Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz (1/10/2008 10:02:46 PM)

You could also say the same about Russia. They need and want the almighty dollar. I think Russia doesn't need much in the way of oil from Iran. I recall reading somewhere that Russia, or one of their former satellite countries ships natural gas to Western Europe (i.e. Germany, France etc). Russia has no treaty with Iran, so I think they would sit aside until it was too late to help. As for the other countries in the Middle East? I think you'd see the UK and the US facing off against them.
