Rhone -> France or China? (9/16/2000 2:46:00 PM)

I finally finished the first scenario of the U.S. Army long campaign. Of course I went up against the French. I set up the preferences to show 2800 requisition points for me and XXX for the French.
Man, they had tanks, and field guns (AA and AT), and Pillboxes and Maginot Line Defenses and Infantry coming out of the woodwork. I thought I just assaulted the beaches of China!
I was losing men on the beaches like it was Normandy so instead of bombing the hell out of the French with my 16 and 14 inch guns, I was laying clouds of smoke for cover while they bridged gaps in the coastline that was covered in mines.
Around turn 10 I open up my first gap and fought up the singular road to the first hill about 1500 yards inland. I lose my 3 halftracks and 2 Shermans because the line of sight is horrible and my engineers (the only ground troops available in the area, were getting eaten alive by fortified Foreign Legions and Machine Gun nests.
By turn 20, I have taken the 3 objectives 2000 yards off the beach and try to get to the final 2 objectives at the back of the map. There, I bomb the objectives continuously for about 10 turns with my 16's and 14's from the Battleships. I see infantry units and MG units dispersing at a high rate, more than I've ever seen. A bomb would go off, and a message would pop up about the infantry dispersing. Sometimes 3 times per bomb! In any event about 20 tanks stacked up in one of the objective hexes and I saw them sitting there with some forward observers...so I continued to bomb the heck out of the victory hexes.
I could not take the final 2 victory locations before the scenario ended. I had only 34 casualties and 18 AFV knocked out. I thought I lost alot more men than that! The French had 200 casualties listed and 22 AFV lost. I owned 3 objectives and they owned 2.
I received a moderate loss for this. When I looked at the final map....I was horrified to see French units massed 3 deep on the edges of the map and multiple units stacked in cover at the back of the map. I mean, they had units EVERYWHERE! There were sections of the beach front that had infantry backed by armor that I never saw. But the shear quantity was mind-boggling.
I lost the scenario by a score of 8000-2000. In v2.3, I smoked these guys and had them for lunch before heading out to battle Germans.
Is this another case of me screwing something up in the settings? I sure hope so, if not, facing Germans of this magnitude, I will be toast!
