nikb -> Reverse (9/17/2000 4:14:00 AM)

I think this may have been covered before, but I cant remember the outcome. I would really like to be able to reverse my AFVs so as to retain their frontal armour to the threat point ie the front. I am currently playing the Blenheim Blunder scenerio and pushed my Grants and Stuarts out a bit too far. They are being hammered so I have set up a screen of infantry (with six pounders as a hard shoulder) to try to dampen the German drive. The Grants out in front appear to weather the long range firing on their frontal armour, however, when I try to drop them back behind the infantry screen they show there rear and WHAM! I am kind of stuck. Either I leave them out in front and they take heaps of punishment/suppression, or I try to withdraw a small way and become an easy target anyway. Is there a way to withdraw? Even by having a limit on the number of hexes a tank (or other vehicle) can reverse would be better than nothing at all. I am sure there are some valid reasons for this, but I would like to save my Grants! Oh by the way, loving this V4. Cheers Nik

Their are a number of reasons for this, first among them is that each hex is 50 meters and AFVs of that day did not back up that far and also their reverse speeds were very low. Tanks of WW2 did what you dont like and that is turn the main body around and drive back but with the gun pointing back at the enemy.

Try laing down some smoke to cover the withjrawal ------------------ Grenadier SPWAW Beta Team

Ah...yes, thanks Brent. Should have thought about smoke. I tend to under employ this "weapon", much to my peril in this scenerio. Nik

This is not a flame directed at you Drake so please dont take it this way. I brought up AFV's reversing quite some time ago and I had several people tell me the same thing as you, a hex is 50 meters, and AFV's dont reverse that far. Well no one seems to mind that an infantry squad can advance 50 meters a turn under fire!! No infantryman in his right mind is gonna run 50 meters while rifle, mg and cannon fire rain down on him but we can do that in the game. I think it quite odd that people can say the one thing is fine and normal while the other is completely unrealistic. If an infantry squad can advance into fire 50 meters then a AFV should be able to reverse 50 meters! ------------------ McGib Ready Aye Ready

I agree with you about that not being compleatly realistic McGib, but I think it had to come down to choices in meny casses to what is realistic and what wound take the fun out of the game. Something like troops advanceing 50 meters had to be done so that player would not spend hours just trying to move forward and be board and a chice of haveing no reverse that dont slow the game play down.

McGib is right here. Infantry does not move only 50 meters under fire, I have seen several times when a unit, which is fired upon constantly, moves not only one but even four hexes, or 200 meters. Brent is also right, using smoke helps in most cases. Still a reverse would be a good thing, simply pressing Ctrl down while moving, and the tank would move backwards. Not too hard to implement. It could cost twice as much movement points.

All I ever wanted to do was to move back one hex. Move out from behind an obstruction (building/trees/hill) fire a round or two and move back. ------------------ McGib Ready Aye Ready
