I run a non-fictional league. It's 1963. The Los Angeles Angels have the 2nd pick in the draft. They choose................
Anthony Solano (a middle reliever). I don't think Mr. Solano is a real player but a scrub generated by the games. His ratings are:
Age: 29
Stuff: 5
Control: 9
Velocity: 1
Endurance: 3
Potential: 9

I don't think this is a proper pick for the AI to make (obviously). I can't see Mr. Solano developing into anything other than a clubhouse attendant. At first I thought maybe the Angels were in some financial difficulites. However, they have over $33,000,000 available to spend. I've heard of being frugal, but this is silly.

I would say that this is some sort of bug. Maybe it's happened in the past but I usually don't go through the draft player by player. This time I did and this is what I found.

P.S. In the rest of the first round there were 6 other picks similar to Mr. Solano. I think the drafting of the teams on the whole was not the best. I have the 20th pick and still available is an 18 year old starting pitcher by the name of Jim Palmer.

This is one of the problems I have using real players, AI draft selections. I thought it had to do with player afinity, So I started a league with out player afinity, it didn't help. The AI feels compeled to pick a player in every round of the ammy draft, even when only slugs are left. Other times I, like you, can't find any reason why the AI picks some players. I wish I had some insight, but I don't have a clue.

Once again, I believe that the AI GM has difficulty managing finances, so I'd be inclined to turn financials OFF. I have done several real player draft leagues in this fashion, and the AI picks much better without financial considerations.

Agreed with KG ... the picking is so much better than when "finance" mode is left on ....

Sorry to disapoint you KG, but all of my AI and real player problems were with finances turned off.

I hate bumping but I would really be interested in knowing if this is a bug that will be addressed in the next release, or if that's just the way it is.  I appreciate anyone in the know who can reply whose name might be Shaun.  Thanks a bunch.

It's tough to analyze this without really being ableo to walk through the draft in your league from my end.

Could you give me some additional info:

1. League size
2. Year started
3. Any changes to the financial model, or using the defaults?
4. Any XML tweaks or using defaults
5. Is the league setup as multiplayer or single player?
6. Modern closer usage on or off?
7. Is affinity mode on or off?

I just ran 1963 and the coresponding ammy draft and the picks looked excellent, so hopefully we can figure out where the nuance is.

Here are the answer to your questions.

1. League size -- 20 teams, 10 AL, 10 NL
2. Year started -- 1960 with 16 teams. I ran an expansion in 1962 to go from 16 to 20
3. Any changes to the financial model, or using the defaults? -- defaults
4. Any XML tweaks or using defaults -- defaults
5. Is the league setup as multiplayer or single player? -- single player
6. Modern closer usage on or off? -- modern closer usage off
7. Is affinity mode on or off? -- player affinity on

I'm pretty sure that's it. With Player affinity teams (a) Only will attempt to draft players that actually played for their team and hence, (b) will avoid drafting player that were *not* on their team.
