WallysWorld -> Skirmishers - when and how to use? (1/24/2008 7:53:13 PM)

Finally starting playing a campaign after buying the game months ago and so far really enjoying it.

But after reading some comments on this forum and the manual, I'm still a bit mystified as to when to deploy skirmishers and what impact they have on the battle. When battles start and the lines close in, I set my formations to Line and never deploy skirmishers.

Any opinions on when to use skirmishers would be much appreciated.

There are 2 uses for Skirmishers, in my book.

1. In difficult terrain they get a bonus so they are actually better than lines, which get a negative modifier.

2. If faced with artillery. Since skirmish takes only 25% casulties from art, compared to lines. U can then screen u lines with a unit in skirmish formation taking much less damage in a soak off capacity. Ofc the more art ur faced with the more usefull this can be. 1 art unit might not make this necesarry, but if several it can be very usefull.

Kind regards,

Rasmus

When I'm on the defensive, skirmish lines are quite useful, as they seem to be improve your staying power - however, a unit with skirmishers out is much slower than in line, so they're not helpful on the attack.  This is wholly observational on my part based on my experiences so far.
