Blackjak -> Cap wont react..noob needs help! hehe (1/28/2008 1:50:00 AM)

im playing scenerio 17. i got lucky with the initial carrier battle lost yorktown but sank 2 of his cv's and sent other 2 to tokyo i guess..anyway i sent lex back to pearl and i just got a cve cant remember name..but it has 24 fighters on it..i positioned it just behind lunga thinking the fighters would fly cap for my transports supplying lunga..trying to build up a force to move on up the slot. anyway..they nver flew..i moved the cve and its 3 ships on up the slot in front of lunga so the bombers would fly directly over it to him my transports...they still never came off the deck..how do i get them to fly..

also, what is the max effective amount of planes that can fly off an airstrip. thought i read somewhere it was 4x the airbase number. like if port morsbey is 4 then i can fly 12 effectively without suffering operational loss..also..would the 12 be actual aircraft or 12 squadrons.
thanks

ok this is frustrating me....i started over and i have yorktown and lexington between lunga and shortland...im supplying lunga and bombers come down and bomb the piss out of them and my fighers on my cv's just sit there..why? they are in good supply nothing damaged...they just left port..i didnt add any planes so im not over the 10%. also..if it says capacitiy of 90 that mean only 9 planes? dont understand that..need help please....

If you want carriers to fly CAP over a transport you can position your transport in the same hex as your carrier. The CAP from the carrier will cover the entire hex. That´s one way.

If you want your carrier to fly CAP over a transport not in the same hex as the carrier...click on the carrier fleet, then click on LRCAP for a fighter group as the mission type...then click on select target. This will take you to the map screen. Take your mouse and click on the transport fleet you want covered.

The air group should have, ¨Task Force X¨ as the target and be on LRCAP as the mission type if you did it right.

Also black jack, you won´t see anything of your CAP unless the hex is attacked by air.

Carrier aircraft are penalized and do not operate so great in coastal or shallow hexes. Keep them out of these hexes when expecting trouble.

ok..how do i make them cap over lunga...same way...lrcap and target lunga?
his cvx4 fleet just came down the slot and tangled with mine..i had 100% cap on so i didnt escort my bombers..which turned out to be a good thing..cause they defended my 2 lil cvs well..i sank 2 of his shoho and shokaku..sp? he barly dmged yorktown and lexington..longbeach seems to be no help at all...24 fighters on her and they wont fly.

The Long Island (not longbeach) is somewhat of an enigma. It doesn't have any dedicated airgroups of it's own and it is extremely small and VERY limited in capacity.

The capacity of the LI is only 16 planes. Carriers can carry twice their capacity, but loading more than 110% of their capacity turns them into an air ferry. They cannot launch planes if they are carrying more than 110% of thier capacity. So, none of the marine fighters, that all have 24 planes can effectively operate from the LI. Only the dive bomber squadrons that are only 16 planes, and the torpedo squadrons that are 15 planes strong can operate from it. Be careful not to put an 18 plane squadron on it as it will not fly.

The best use of the LI is discussed in other threads. It is good for operating squadrons stranded from damaged fleet carriers and it is good for ferrying land based fighters between Australia and Noumea. Obviously, it is of limited use and the reason why you don't find it in any of the great carrier battles that took place in this theater historically.

We won't even mention that a ship that slow would hold back the fast CFTFs.  In a way the Japanese did the USN a favor by doing in the old, slow BBs at PH and forced modern tactics on the "Gun Club."

You can use that ship as a/c ferry, but actually you also can send her back to Pearl to free some commitment value. Depends on the individual situation...

I hate to continue the off topic of the benefits of the LI, but if I'm playing the AI, and have a huge lead, I'll send it north by itself with the goal to get it sunk in order to provide some killer diving areas after the war, and to support the declining coral reefs in the region. [:D]

There's a company in Milne Bay -- SE of PNG -- that advertises great diving in old WW II wrecks. I imagine Iron Bottom Sound is another favorite diving spot.
