See this article claiming new information on the actual colors that the US Navy battleships were painted at Pearl harbor:

http://starbulletin.com/2006/12/07/news/story04.html

Is this on the level?

I believe this has been the subject of a great deal of discussion, in particular the colours of the turret roofs of the various battleships have been uncertain for a while.

Well if it was discussed on the forum I totally missed it! [>:]

You can just make out the white tops on Pensy's turrets one and two.

You can also make out some of the color turret tops from this overhead. Especially the Tennesse's white tops on turrets 1 & 2. Obviously, white stands out the best in this photograph.

This is one of the things about this forum I greatly respect...there a people here that can discuss with some authority the color of ships from almost 70 years ago...wow!

I believe the majority of the turret tops color issue has gotten settled with the discovery of the official U.S. Navy orders along with the period photographs that have been around forever. In addition, U.S. cruisers used colored stripes on their turret tops during this period. There is photographic evidence of this readily available as well.

The biggest debate is on the color of the BBs themselves. There is supposed evidence that a color called 'Med. Blue' (which is somewhat similar to 5-S) was used on several of the BBs at Pearl, specifically the Arizona. The Arizona reverting from 5-D (dark gray) to the 'blue' color during her refit. There are also some PH salvage videos that seems to indicate a 'blue' color on some of the BBs, but until the actual official order or documentary proof is release for all to see, it will remain a very, very heated argument.

Were all the Turret Three tops grey?

Yes...or blue, as the case might be. As a guess to why the identification colors were not used on turret three - probably because of the catapult being located there.

Speculating - it also allowed for instant differentiation between the bow and stern so the color denoting the BB div could be distinguished from the color denoting the air group. Two colors show BB div, one color shows air group.

And of course, the problem with the colored turret tops is that it gives a perfect aiming point for dive bombers. Just aim for the bright red spot on the ship, you will hit something important.

Actually, this is quite correct.
