I' m thinking about getting the game. I am a fan of the original EiA and I appreciate the efforts the developers put in this computer version. However, a major issue for me is the possibility of cheating in PBEM - don't want to put weeks/months of my time in a game that can be ruined by even only one "unfair" player [:-]. Are there any checks in the game to prevent cheating (such us replaying combats/chit selections/dice rolls)?

There's a few, but the game is far from being "safe" against a cheater and I think it will never be.

Months/years is more accurate. The most secure way to play is to exchange battle files, which is VERY time consuming. The fastest is Quick Combat which means the phasing player runs the battles. You are allowed to preset your chit picks though so you can set your defensive chit if you are not the phasing player.  Extremely astatistical die rolls would seem to be an indicator of cheating to me but I guess if someone is really that focused on it they can do things to get around any system.  I have always enjoyed this game because it punishes the successful and since it is unlikely someone would be cheating their way to failure the other nations have a tendency to hand out a beat down to whomever is leading in VPs

I would wait for the next patch and see where things stand.

I have not yet started PBEM yet, since it there are so many cheating exploits.
Hopefully they will get that a bit safer soon.
There have been some good ideas tossed about.

The AI at this point is not very good at this point either for solo adventures.
I can easily win with the highest bonus settings for the comptuer as any country.

The game has only been out for a month, and they did fix quite a few bugs in the first patch already.
I suspect in 2-3 months, it will be a really nice game.

As it is, I still fritter my time away playing the braindead AI.

well, it will be a really "time consuming" work, but somewhere between a bid of 1000 victory points and the default without bid of 400 for france, in a, for sure, middle point there will are a challenging but not unbeatable game setup, other way to enhance the computer opponents is to make a rule of play alone and declare a war on each major power on first game turn, all these measures aside the fact that you can play some nations, as spain or turkey that already will have a hard time winning, for me the given arrange of options available is good, indeed it with patches only can be to a better game, other way to make harder the computer opponents indeed are house rules, but i do think them are do not needed, when we have the scenario editor available can make different scenarios setup, that combined with already said can make a challenging game, i do not try to enforce this post, it is only the truth that these "mecanism" work for me on much turn based games when i do have to play them alone, take it as a oppinion,

with best regards,

Murat30, Alarick.
