GFeros -> 32 Team NFL League Created (2/2/2008 8:40:31 PM)

Using all the resources and downloads at FBMax, plus checking in the forums I am happy to say I have created my first NFL League. All I need to do now is update rosters, attributes, more graphics to the fields etc! Thanks to all and VcCommish for the vpnfl teams database- that was a big plus! I know its just the beginning and alot more work is ahead but its a good start. Now on to jdhalrack's editor. Again thanks to all.

Congrats, GFeros!  I've been having fun updating the rosters / depth charts over the past day or so on the mdb file I'm working on with the Madden attributes, and the work is much easier as a result of using the editor.  Right now, I'm thinking it's going to take me at least another week to hammer out something resembling the latest depth charts for each team.  AND I'm still testing the roster with my playbooks to see what attributes may need tweaking.  I'm definitely staying busy with MaxFB while waiting for the latest patch to drop....

Hey quixian, nice to here that. Look forward to your work. Are you putting the exact madden attributes? Thats what my next step is, I wan't to start with the attributes. Have to admit the vpnfl by commish was great! I also need to learn how to do the field artwork, etc. Also want to incorporate the player pictures.

GFeros,
is your league available to anyone. If not is there an NFL league out there?

Thanks

Importing the madden stats was a bit tricky, I'll give you a quick run down on how I did it.

1. First, I copied the data from the original spreadsheet and formatted it so it would be laid out with the MaxFB designations for player positions and rating. A copy of that spreadsheet is attached - re-name the file to .zip to unzip and view the excel sheet.

2. Next, I exported the rosters from the VPNFL database to create a .csv file.

3. Then I compared the csv file to the madden roster and copied over the columns from the madden roster for the players' first and last names, player number, position, and ratings. The ratings on the madden sheet are in the same order as they appear in the csv file.

4. I then deleted the excess lines from the bottom or the csv file - you'll note that there should be 1727 lines of player data in the .csv file (the same number as the Madden sheet).

5. Lastly, I imported the data from the csv file back into the mdb file using the editor.

Of course, there were a few problems with doing it this way:

- There were a few players that were not deleted in the original mdb when I imported the new file. I think this is due to the fact that I imported less players to the mdb than were in the file originally (see step 4 above, where the excess lines were deleted from the csv file to be imported)

- The VPNFL file contained more accurate current player and roster information. Now, I am having to go back thru the file and correct rosters, depth charts, add rookies, remove retired players, et al. Still, it's been easier than simply inputting the ratings manually, which I was doing before the new roster editor was released.

So, despite the drawbacks, I hope you get some ideas from my procedure outlined above for how you want to handle the editing work. It's going to take me at least another week or two to get the rosters close to accurate, but at least the correct players and ratings are in the mdb at this point.

Regarding player portraits, you can find quite a few at the following link: http://web.mac.com/sixwilsons/SATMods/Photos.html - Note that these were created for use in 2nd and Ten football and will need to be modified accordingly to work in MaxFB.

Hey, BillyO. Once I have everything done I will gladly make it available. It is turning out very nice, I've got most of the field artwork and everything done.(Thanks to FBMax site- alot of the work already done there for download) The hardest part are the player attributes and from previous posts you will see quixian is also working on that. Hopefully we we make a great NFL League if not a couple. I still need to get artwork done for example: Dolphins endzone plus other teams, etc. It really changes the atmosphere of the game when you set up a league with all its original graphics art work, players, etc..like the NFL League.

GFeros -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (2/4/2008 11:54:43 PM)

Thanks quixian, this is awesome.  I think we are on to something big.  LOL.  Really can't wait to get an NFL League going.  Im progressing with the stadium fields, going to leave player attributes for last.  It's great that we get support from the community here.

Hey guys will this league be available to download and just placing it in the maximum folder. Also will this be able to have the newest draft picks added to it.

quixian -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (2/10/2008 3:35:37 AM)

I'd imagine any league mdb that we can create would be easily installed into the max folder.  I've made a few copies here and there (just to make sure I didn't make any irreversible changes when trying different methods of importing/exporting data) and moved them in and out of the max folder and everything worked fine.  I would say that importing a draft file could be pretty easy (I hope), given the new import from a csv file feature in the Player Editor.

I've had really good experiences in-game thus far with the league mdb I'm tinkering with that uses the Madden ratings - at least with the playbooks I've used, which limit money plays and push the CPU to run a balanced offensive and defensive strategy.  For example, the running game has been pretty realistic thus far.  Calling plays for Reggie Bush is very different than using Larry Johnson - Bush will usually run for 1-3 yds a clip, but might break a huge run, whereas LJ is more likely to get 4-6 yds every time he touches the ball, but won't break any big plays on the defense.  I think the only change that I made to the ratings in the roster I've been testing was that I globally edited all RBs speed minus 5, and increased blocking for all players by 7 (because too many RBs were speed burners at default, and the OL, WRs, TEs, and RBs were all poorer at blocking than they should have been).

Great news, I can't wait !!

mvb34 -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (2/28/2008 6:11:55 AM)

bump

Any new info on this project??

quixian -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (3/4/2008 2:21:58 AM)

Nothing new to report on my tiny little Madden NFL project right now, unfortunately.  I placed my MaxFB rostering work on hold lartely b/c I'm really heavily anticipating the changes in version 2.2 and would like to break in the new version with heavy playtesting as I finalize each team.  Usually, after I've completed each team, I try them out in-game with uniforms I've downloaded from FB Max to make sure everyone is showing up properly, etc.  The proposed changes to how the CPU uses the profiles to evaluate the depth chart, in particular, have me holding off for now on making future changes until after the patch is out.

All that, AND the past few weeks, I've been immersing myself in The Witcher and the latest version of Wrestling Mpire (like MaxFB, another great indie-developed game)...but I'll be working big-time on the rosters again soon.

leeman67 -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (5/17/2008 2:16:28 AM)

quixan,

I posted this issue on the thread dealing directly w/ JD's editor, but perhaps you might know as well. I'm trying to import an edited roster of mine back into MaxFB using JD's editor and the result is that the player names now have quotation marks (" ") around their first and last names. Did you run into this at all when importing your .csv file, and if you did, how did you resolve it?

Thanks,
Lee

quixian -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (5/18/2008 9:01:57 PM)

Good question - I might have seen that type of problem too, but to be honest I squashed so many bugs during the process that I don't remember what exactly I saw in all.  [;)]

Before importing the csv into the mdb file, make sure that all the cells in each column are formatted the same as the columns in the target .mdb file.  For example, if all the cells in the field "LastName" are formatted as Text, you would not want to import a .csv file where the "LastName" column is formatted as "General" or "Number" or anything else.  That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that might be causing the error you are seeing.

leeman67 -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (5/28/2008 6:42:41 AM)

I figured out this problem, and it does require having Excel (versus just OpenOffice.org, e.g.).  Save the .csv file as an .xls file, and then re-save back to a .csv file again.  That should do the trick.

Where can I find your NFL file

garysorrell -> RE: 32 Team NFL League Created (12/25/2008 7:18:59 PM)
