The Russians have done it again after Fantasy Wars.

Now they are bringing back a forgotten classic. Kings Bounty, the
precursor to the HOMM series. And it looks absolutely beautiful.

On the right side of the page (the link you gave) it says "Genre: Real-Time Strategy"

I wouldn't doubt it. I just got done reading the March issue of PC-Gamer and everything is FPS and RTS. I am a TBS lover! I have World In Conflict and I can't stand the game. It got kudos up the ying yang but I still don't like it. Everything is hurry and hurry and hurry. Look around for a moment and you lose. [:@]

Yeah, I looked at some of the pictures and the characters are standing in hexes. It definately IS turn based. Excellent! [&o] [:D]

A big hit could change all that. This game has all the bells & whistles which
could help re-invigorate the genre. I always liked Kings Bounty the best of the Homm games. The RPG style was great.

Maybe Stardocks 4x fantasy game as well.

Turn based are alive and doing good. Space empires and couple other sifi, the calm before the storm(ww2 game) to mention a couple....

Galactic Civ-2 and the expansion Dark Avatar are great TBS games. I have those and have spent many hours lumbering away at the "End Turn" button.

I would hate to see the TBS genre leave entirely. That's one of the great things about Matrix, they put out a lot of TBS games.

I have Space Empires-V and a couple of the previous versions as well. Excellent games. [:)]

I don't mind playing a Real Time Strategy if at least they let you do some things while it's paused. World In Conflict won't let you do a thing while paused except look around. [:@]

I'm with you LarryP!

I played the WiC demo, then the full version (very briefly!) on a friend's PC. The gfx, sounds and overall look and feel were stunning. But, the game just felt like it was on speed and there was never any time to take stock and actually think. It was a bit like Company of Heroes. A brilliant concept, let down by poor execution due to it being basically a clickfest. I lost soooo many games of CoH because I spent too much time clicking from one side of the damn map to the other constantly. It drove me nuts. WiC felt a lot like it in some ways. Not for me.

Just my 2p anyway. Ymmv [:)]

Exactly exactly exactly!!! I too have Company Of Heroes and I played it some this morning, again. Clickfest, and the troops do what they want to do anyway so why bother having us think we are telling them what to do?! Dang game is a pretty joke.

I do the same thing in WiC. Look around and play with the menu items then lose. That blasted jerk keeps yelling at me telling me what to do and it's more than annoying. I want to reach into the game and choke the punk. Parker this and Parker that. It's funny too because that's really my last name. [:)]

By the way Jim, I saw you get shot in the chest this week and you fell into a pit of dead bodies. Feeling better now? [;)]

Yes, that guy shouting really annoyed me too! Didn't he do it on the tutorial scenario? I seem to remember thinking that this was a killer game when I began playing through the tutorial as the gfx really were amazing. Then, the pace became faster and faster and I was getting shouted at more frequently. Eventually, I gave up. I wasn't quick enough with the mouse and couldn't be bothered trying to keep up with the orders any more. What a great shame!

CoH could have been such a great game if it had been done better too. I'm not going to bother looking at the new version as the first one put me off for a number of reasons. Yes, the ai soldiers did seem to just follow their own agenda. The computer cheated far too much for my liking and it spoilt the game.

LOL! My chest is fine now thanks hehe. What a great recovery eh?! I'm a complete Lost addict though. Been waiting for season 4 for what seems like years, not months [:D]

<sigh> Someday they will listen to me lord. lol They really should change the genre labels for some of these games. Some are "real time" and others are "unrealistic time clickfests" So there needs to be a label of URTC and RTS to distinquish from games that are ok real time games and those that are stupid URTC. ;)

I hope this game and Fanatsy Wars does well in sales to perhaps finally persuade someone to do a turn based Lord of the Rings game. Age of Wonders has some decent LOTR mods, but I still crave a game designed along the lines of SPI's War for Middle Earth. Though the board game was broken in a few places, the general concept was fine, A PC game which combined Strategic Command gameplay for the military campaign and RPG quest elements would be ideal.  Someday perhaps.......

I'd be in love with that game, if I could effectively pause and issue orders. Maybe I just missed it or something, but managing all that in real time is just hell. Either there should be a TacAI, or you can pause, because when you make decisions, you don't have that kind of delay.

Good catch with AOW2. There are some superb campaign scenarios for that game.

I hope Stardock answers our needs :).

AoW was a good game for its time. I still have my boxed copy somewhere in the loft. Was AoW2 much different? I heard it was much harder.

What surprises me are all the ravings about it in PC-Gamer and GameSpot. PC-Gamer also gave it the RTS award of 2007. So there must be a lot of fast thinking younger people that are very comfortable with that type of play. Oh why is youth wasted on the young?! [;)]

I also have AOW2 and it is a good game, not my favorite as it could have been much better. It also becomes a clickfest at times. Very repetitive. I really liked HOMM4, "Heroes Of Might and Magic v4" but they went nuts with the last two releases. Now it's stupid.

Vanilla had issues but with Shadow Magic it became a classic in my book. Some of the scenarios are fantastic.

Pity it is so hard to find nowadays. So glad I kept mine :) (I usually get rid of games I am bored at)

Together with Tropico,TOAW(3), JA2 and MOO2 it remains one of those rare games I will never really grow tired off. MOM would have been another but it aged a bit too much grapically
for my taste.

Just to stick in a mention of Disciples 2 in this context; as good as SM and more fun than HoMM 3 or 5 IMHO (I never played 4).

I had issues with Age of Wonders II and Shadow Magic because of the ease it is to destroy the entire faction by just killing its wizard. The AI isn't very strong at building wizards towers so it made it that much easier. Plus as allies they would let you march up to the capital doorsteps with 3 full stacks and then declare war and crush them. There should have been some better rules of diplomacy and allying in that you can never enter the capital area of effect (so many hexes) without your ally being at war with someone and they are fighting in that area of effect. The origional provided the best AI performance, but, Shadow Magic provided the random generations I wanted in the first game. As it is now I don't play either because I'm tired of the maps in the origional and the AI plus the stupid wizard thing are both stupid in the latter ones.

Also HOMM2 was the best of the series because you could individually tweak each AI to what level of difficulty you wanted. HOMM III was fair, but, it only had one difficulty setting and all the AI's used it and it never compared to the AI of HOMM II. I actually lost playing HOMM II and never lost in III. Didn't get IV or V because I read about them and really that's just too long of a sequel of the same game. If you've got II or III you've got them all.

How could you forget and put MOM in the old folks home of computer games? I can still play MOM today and the graphics don't bother me at all. Sure it's 8 bit, but, big deal graphics aren't everything. So, I guess when your wife gets old and wrinkled you're going to put her out of your mind too? hehehe Behind every wrinkle is still the same warm soft game you knew when it was young. ;)

Reviews of WIC makes it sound much like Ground Control 2 that I've played. In GC2 I used following tactic: infantry secures bottlenecks while I micromanage tanks and other mobile stuff against enemy landingzones and other objectives. When objective is secured, I check out general picture, repair/heal stuff, and get appropriate reinforcements against next objective. Same could work in WIC. Try it before you throw towel [;)]

If someone could give me advice like that with Shogun: Total War... [&:]

Actually I have that and like it. It allows me to do things while paused and the speed controls are great. I bought SC because I have a great PC and I wanted to see how it ran. I ended up liking it. I read that the expansion for it is even better and also makes the interface easier to work with.

I also have F.E.A.R and I like that too. Go figure?! [&:]

I don't dislike all RTS games, but I always prefer turn based. [:D]

Well, the wizards are key players so it makes sense that you lose when they are killed. I think you can toggle that though. Also, AI has issues on some maps but it is almost like TOAW3, you need to make maps that AI can handle.
